Şebnem Ferah (born 12 April 1972) is a Turkish singer, songwriter, composer, and guitarist. She began her music career as the lead vocalist of the all-female hard rock band Volvox until 1994, after which she pursued a successful solo career. Her music style ranges from pop rock to hard rock, with her later albums incorporating more of the hard rock sound. Şebnem Ferah was born in Yalova to ethnic Turkish immigrant parents from Skopje, now in North Macedonia. She first learned solfeggio and various instruments from her father, who was a teacher and a musician, playing Rumelian folk songs on the bağlama, mandolin, and piano. She received her first guitar during her first year at Namık Sözeri High School in Bursa, where she took acoustic guitar lessons. In her second year, she formed the group Pegasus with her friends and had their first stage appearance at a rock festival in Bursa in 1987. After Pegasus disbanded, she formed Volvox in 1988 with four friends, naming the band after a microorganism they learned about in a biology lesson. After high school, Şebnem attended Middle East Technical University in Ankara, studying economics. During this time, she met Özlem Tekin, who later joined Volvox. Due to logistical difficulties, the band could not practice for a year and a half. In her second year of university, Şebnem decided to leave her economics studies and moved back to Istanbul. There, she attended Istanbul University, studying English language and literature, and performed in various bars with Volvox until the band dissolved in 1994.
