"Sun screen" actually sells pretty well in Scotland. We see the sun so rarely that when it does appear most of us burn instantly, so we always have to have some sun tan lotion available in the summer just in case a miracle happens and the sun appears. We then proceed to complain about it until it goes away

i KNEW there was something FISHY about that picture/description, those are NOT "microwaveable kitkats" those are in fact, “Bake ‘N Tasty Mini Kit Kats Custard Pudding Flavor" and well you BAKE THEM, you will get nothing but a puddle of melted goo if you place it in the microwave.

Interestingly enough, the Dragon Ball licence wasn't removed in France, which was one of the first countries (well, outside of Japan, obviously) where manga and animes turned out to be massively popular, and where Dragon Ball was already aired on TV in the late 80s.

that's what I said, dragon ball was already quite well known everywhere in the world EXCEPT the USA, was huge in mid to late 90's then USA finally picked up the trend on early 2000's don't know why this dude is saying dragon ball reached peek popularity in the early 2000's when the popularity was actually on the decline.

So in reality it's not an interesting fact. It was just because the country opened itself to animes since that time. So that early cultural change got people closer to animes. It wasnt a very distant and exotic product, unlike in the u.s around that same time.

@@carlosaugusto9821 it is actually a very interesting fact, all over the world anime has had a strong presence since the 70's but appearently the USA has only had it since the late 90's early 2000's I find it fascinating, it says a lot about cultural differences

I have been in love with anime for 40 years I'm part of a generation where even in the eighties American companies were hiring Japanese companies to make cartoons like Thundercats. All that said it really says something about the medium the medium when Larry says the phrase crazy out of control panty thief and I have to stop and think about who hes talking about because there's been so many

You wouldn't believe how many people I've known that say "I hate anime" and then rattle off all the 1980's cartoons they loved that were animated over there, especially co-production based on a Japanese toyline Transformers. But I just loved that aesthetic, even as a kid. The colors were sharper, the characters were more detailed, and every so often, there would be a weird insert of Japanese culture. Say, someone wearing a Gatchaman T-shirt in a Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends or Scrooge McDuck having a big bottle of sake in his refrigerator. I always loved that not quite anime, not quite Western look.

@@mightyfilm There has been so much cross-polination of American cartoons and Japanese anime over the last 40 years that the two have simply become shades of the same thing. Because of which I think it's so weird that people would hate on anime (or cartoons, for that matter).

@@nickfifteen They both influenced each other so much that Western stuff looks like anime and anime looks like western stuff. And they're ALL animated on Korea. Still, there was something special about how Japanese animation outsourcing was a major industry standard in the 80's and 90's. I love looking at that weird "Man of the Year" Sonic cartoon TMS did and seeing just how much of their work on Animaniacs and Tiny Toons influenced it.

I have always loved the look of 70s and 80s mecha. I'm wondering if it was because of the various mecha, like Robotech and Voltron. It might also be because I loved the interior of mom's 1985 Nissan Maxima, and it had various gizmos that would look right in a mecha.

@@mightyfilm All the Hasbro/Marvel Production shows like Spidey & his Amazing Friends and Transformers were a collaboration between Sunbow Entertainment and Toei Animation. I grew up watch those shows as a kid along with the imported mecha stuff like Voltron & Robotech. Later on I graduated to cyberpunk style anime like Akira which were shown on cable stations and eventually witnessed the eventual takeover of Cartoon Network by Dragonball Z.

The thing about the Ranma fighting games is that the good SNES one never made it to the US. Why do I say it's the good one? It's the only one that has Up as Jump. Ranma Hard Battle has one of the face buttons as jump for some reason.

I had a game for the PS1 that was first designed to be a Dragon Ball fighting game, but the game studio lost the license so they retooled it into a different IP that they could release. They made the game about psychics battling it out flying around the screen and I can't for the life of me remember the name of the game. Something like Psychic Wars.

@@Nathan-ls4xt This game has characters that were blatant Dragon Ball character rip off's with just some minor changes to stop from being sued. The game was complete sh*t. It was a beat em up where you can fly around and use superpowers. It had nothing to do with the Manga/Anime

@@neilprice513 Trying to find that name and all the google suggests is "Psychic Force", even in PAL regions it was called by that. Also, the Japanese version even has no trace of Dragon Ball IP being used or suggested by the developers.

Ban Dai had a series of NES games Westernized by erasing the Japanese IP. Ge Ge Ge No Kitaro became Ninja Kid, Q-Taro the Ghost became Chubby Cherub. But there's a special case with Kinnikuman Tag Team. The entire franchise was Westernized without the anime series as M.U.S.C.L.E. figures, and so there already was a market for the game without much alteration. Other than wiping out the (not that good) 8-Bit rendition of the opening theme, and replacing friendly Nazi Brocken Jr. with perfectly okay indigenous stereotype Geronimo (mainly due to the lack of Brocken as one of the M.U.S.C.L.E. figures because he had a freaking swastika on him), there wasn't much of an alteration. Even the instruction booklet kept their Japanese names (Ramenman inexplicably Romanized as "Larmenman" aside), when the ONLY characters named in the American toyline were M.U.S.C.L.E. Man (Kinnikuman) and Terribull (Buffaloman). Too bad they didn't make the game GOOD though.

Yeah, I used to collect MUSCLE figures when I was at school, I remember a kid wanting to swap a ton of his ones for just one of mine, I accepted as I wasn't really into them and was more excited he was offering me loads.

I guess since Transformers were massively successful, every toy company was trying to copy that success of buying up the rights to a Japanese toy line and giving it a Western mythology. Must've been just easy to import the game as part of the merchandising. It's the only thing ever released over here that wasn't directly part of Mattel's toyline. I'm surprised they didn't so much as go Shogun Warriors with the toys and just make a Western comic book series because there was NO way a show that violent would have aired in the US. At least until we got the 2002 Ultimate Muscle series.

The Nazi guy did actually make it into one promotional drawing for M.U.S.C.L.E. toys, so at one point, at least briefly, they might've been planning to actually sell him.

@@KasumiKenshirou I really need to look at the original Kinishi figures to see which one could have been used potentially. As it stands, that character had the show banned and unfinished in France. Well, him or his father Brockenman, who...well... in the anime DID have a poison gas attack. I'm sure that would not have gone over nicely in Europe. Brocken Jr. did have a figure in the Ultimate Muscle line. I displayed these second hand MUSCLES on a shelf, and had to have the UM version of the character as part of the Muscle League. He was very out of place looking, as the UM toys were more Chibi-fied.

I think pre-ordering a digital game makes a lot more sense than pre-ordering a physical game. You can download the game early if you pre-order it so that it's ready to play the moment the release day comes. Pre-ordering a physical game doesn't help you get it any faster.

Hey Larry, i have 2 facts for the same price for you : weirdly enough, in France, both Dragon Ball (on Nes) and Ramna 1/2 (on Snes) conserved both their original IPs here. Why ? during the mid 80's up to 90's a TV program for youth called Club Dorothée (on the french channel TF1) broadcasted the show along side other anime (like Saint Seiya and many other), weirdly enough Captain Tsubasa never saw any released in France while the anime was really really crazy popular here.

As I recall, Saint Seiya was popular enough in France (under the name Chevaliers du Zodiaque) that they actually got a French release of the famicom game in Europe, when North America didn't!

Yes. Also, in 1994, France got one of the Super Famicom Sailor Moon games. They had incentive to sell it there, France had a dub at the time. Also, not only did the USA not have a dub in 1994, the game wasn't very good.

I was just coming to comment on this. I absolutely loved blitzball in FFX. This is nearly an identical experience it seems in terms of how it’s played out. Really cool to see. Game Players' actually put an article in their magazine about how Ranma ½ was changed to Street Combat at the time it was released. This was one of the first times I'd ever heard of an "anime." Man, I loved Game Players so much. A+ game journos, honest reviews, and the real scoops.

One of my favorite instances of this is with Last Battle on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, which in Japan was a Hokuto no Ken game, aka Fist of the North Star. Funnily enough, two years after Last Battle released in the US, the Fist of the North Star Anime came to the West, and was popular enough to get a cheesy western made Live Action Film in 1995.

I think my favorite thing about the live action Fist of the North Star is that apparently the actor who played Kenshiro fell in love with the source material and became a massive fan, considered it such an honor to play Kenshiro and even named his son after the character!

I always found this sort of thing interesting. The fact that sometimes it was cheaper to hire someone to remake the designs than it was to pay licensing for the already existing stuff. Also see, British dubs. 9:10 Which is ironic given Micromachines wasn't an authorised release. There is an idea for a video, unofficial games that were still extremely popular

I think some otherwise Japan exclusive anime games also got released in France as they were the earliest weebs. That is likely because France has its own comic culture called BDs (bande dessinée) which also served all age groups and genres. Those BDs had a big influence on manga,too.

"DeCap Attack" on the Sega Genesis (or Sega Mega Drive, in Europe) is another game that is actually based on an anime franchise known as "Magical Hat", and it was remade with original characters when it was localized in the West, to which they kinda look like characters from a Saturday morning cartoon (which is definitely not a bad thing, BTW).

@@goranisacson2502 Yeah, that's what it was called, but when the game was released in the US, it was reworked into "DeCap Attack" with the game having a kind of spooky but cartoony theme to its presentation, especially since the main character of the game also happens to be a headless mummy named Chuck D. Head.

@@kcatarino No, Psycho Fox is original, but Kid Kool was based off a TV program from Japan that featured a Child Host. Think Ryan's World, but far less forced and abusive. I don't know the name, but the only difference is that the main character wore a hat in the Japanese version.

Decap Attack actually got a whole comic series based on it! (Published in the UK Sonic The Comic magazine) It's kinda wild that a quick paint-over idea for a game spun off into its own actual separate story and characters! I remember liking it a lot as a kid

I'm curious as to just how many animé games were butchered when brought over to the west in the early days of video games. For example, I feel like there was a game that was a _Fist of the North Star_ game in Japan, but they took all of that out for the western release. Fun Fact: _Dragon Ball,_ _Peacock King,_ and _Captain Tsubasa_ were all published by Shueisha under their Jump magazine line.

There's one really unique case where they made a version of a game that became *even more anime* for the west. It's Gundam Battle Assault. Originally known as "Gundam: The Battle Master II", it had a bunch of original game characters piloting the many famous mechs of U.C Gundam. When it was brought over as Gundam Battle Assault, they removed the original cast and brought in many of the canon pilots for their own machines!

Last Battle for Sega Genesis was originally Fist of the North Star. The instruction manual for that one has a rather unfortunate typo. _"All is not well with the world! A great war had devastated the land and a nefarious power had established an empire where the good people like slaves."_

I actually own both Street Combat and Ranma½: Hard Battle, the former because it's so hilariously bad, and the latter because I'm surprised that an anime game actually kept its license in North America during the 16-bit era. Also, Shampoo is best girl.

Hard Battle likely kept the license because Viz Video in the US was running the Ranma 1/2 anime, and Viz was running the manga. Probably figured it would be a nice tie-in. Sadly, the US never got what was called in Japan Ranma 1/2 Chougiranbuhen (would have been Super Battle in the US). But I was able to get the Japanese original, so there's that.

@@theodorerelic2718 I actually had quite possibly the original run of Ranma dubbed VHS way back when. Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle was advertised on each of the VHS. That was my first real anime purchase, beside watching whatever was dubbed on TV. Which is very ironic, because I owned Street Combat well before that. So I incidentally got into Ranma sorta-kinda before I sunk way too much money on the VHS (and later DVD) collections.

Even in the 90s, I used to love watching Monkey (when I was literally in nappies at that!). I didn't understand most of what was happening, but I loved it and the theme song. It's super nostalgic. If you want a connection back to anime, there's a running gag in the show Lucky Star where one character does karaoke at the end of each episode, and promptly struggles with Monkey Magic due to all the lyrics being English.

I had a friend with an SNES disk drive. His aunt would send him bootleg disks from Korea. One of them was Ranma 1/2. The game sucked but the characters were so interesting I searched the local indie video rental stores and found the anime.

Actually, in some parts of the European market, particularly in France, Bandai KEPT the Dragon Ball license for Shenlong/Shenron no Nazo's release there. This was because Dragon Ball already found success in those regions.

Glad to hear you say that Ranma name out loud. I remember reading about those games in Super Play and was never sure whether it was Ranma Half or Ranma One/Two. The latter seemed to make sense with the gender-swapping motif - but Half it is, then :) Obviously I never cared enough to just look it up online, and had frankly forgotten about the games, but it's nice to have it settled :) EDIT: And now I have bothered to look it up online, Wikipedia insists that the correct way of saying it is "Ranma One-Half" - so somewhere between the two possibilities I had in mind all those years. I am confuse!

FYI, the '1/2' in Ranma 1/2 is actually pronounced as One-Half, not Half or One/Two. You can hear it on the old DVD and movies trailers. So the full title is said Ranma One-Half, not half or one-two. Larry is actually saying it wrong in the video.

I just recently learned about a Turbografx Doraemon game that was reskinned in the West to be an original game called Cratermaze. It's pretty obvious once you see the cutscenes. Makes me wonder if there were any other Doraemon games that had the IP taken out of them overseas.

The three Doraemon games on the N64 never got released outside of Japan. So perhaps they gave up. He is hugely popular in India, but never seemed to break into the west.

The PC Engine version of Doraemon is a port of the arcade version of Kid no Horehore Daisakusen with a different character, so, the TG16 version is practically a return to the original.

There's yet another example in the Master System, a rather lackluster Metroid clone called Cyborg Hunter. You wouldn't guess it was one of those games until you got to the ending of it, which mentions two other heroes that don't appear anywhere at all. The entire thing was a localized version of Sonic Soldier Borgman, which was one of the many lighthearted, for-kids TV shows based on the Cyber Cop genre that was very popular around the world at the time. I mean, we all know Robocop, don't we?

It definitely did drag on a tidbit (not on a Shippuden level, but i digress), and I feel like if the original series would have had the pace of The Final Chapters and trimmed off a bit of the fat, it would have been a little better. I firmly believe that I associate with InuYasha more because, well, I believe I'm a bit younger than you. 😋 InuYasha started airing on Adult Swim in the US when I was seven or eight, and I watched the hell out of it! Ranma 1/2 is a classic though, I've seen the whole series multiple times! Thanks for the response, I'll be watching all the new videos, per the norm. 👍👍

Wasn't she given the nick name "Japanese J.K. Rowling/J.K. Rowling of the East"? I am a fan of her works, including the little mentioned One Pound Gospel or Maison Ikkoku. Damn @Larry, as a big Inu Yasha fan, hearing "dragging on" is a bit much when it was concluded(oh hi there Yashahime) way earlier than stuff like One Piece, Bleach, Case Closed and Naruto(and ONLY the latter one is, if we forget Boruto exists, actually over by now in anime form!). I think they pretty much went by the book(nearly literally) when they made the anime, the fillers were mostly fun and not too bad. Kanketsu-Ken actually felt nearly going a bit too fast😅 Meanwhile, we never got all Ranma episodes(not even sure it originally ended normally as the studio went broke) and the older stuff like Urusei Yatsura(yes, there's a modern version coming) or Maison Ikkoku here, at least no series, only something like a movie once I believe. We also had the misfortune of the tv channel only doing things half-heartedly and not getting all episodes dubbed as well as Ranma's German VA dying way too early😢

When I was a kid, I went on a family holiday to France (would have been about 1990 I think) and I remember seeing a football based cartoon which was pretty crazy, really dramatic, loads of fantasy type action in it. I didn't speak French and I assumed it was French cartoon (I was only 8 and didn't know what Manga was) and have always wondered what cartoon it was. From the brief clip in this video, I am now wondering if it was a French dub of Captain Tsubasa! It would certainly make a lot of sense, I am sure the style of it was similar to the clip Larry posted and the team names ring a bell too. The show I watched definitely was not Hurricanes which came out in the UK in the mid 90s, that was a totally different animation style to what I saw.

There are several other entires I can think of. The TurboGrafx-16 pack in, Keith Courage, was actually based on the anime Mashin Hero Wataru. Also, while it wasn’t based on a licences anime Chō Wakusei Senki Metafight had a noticeably anime story which was altered when it became Blaster Master. In the West. In fact the three Blaster Master Zero games later combined elects from both versions to make one cohesive story.

Although I’m kinda surprised that the Fist of the North Star games on Master System and Megadrive aren’t on here. As I think their one of the more well known and infamous de-animed games. My Concubine!" washes over) I adore the entirety of Rumiko Takahashi's formidable catalog of influential manga and subsequent anime adaptations, be it Urusei Yatsura, Ranma, Maison Ikkoku, or Inu Yasha, whether in pront, in serialized TV form, or the now forgotten relic of historical media formats known as the original animation video, most commonly seen abbreviated to OAV. Particularly Ranma, as I've always and still today wanted what the son of Saotome long considered to be a curse. I'd rejoice at the ability to almost instantly adapt my physical form between male and female in order to properly reflect the sporadic and sudden shifts in my psyche as the Id and Anima fiercely jockey for supremacy over the Ego. Any queer folk out there with similar experiences to mine are definitely smelling what The Rock is cooking.

Nearly seen all of these anime at some point, Ranma 1/2 was and is still one of my favorites, I like most of Rumiko Takahashi's work. That includes Maison Ikkoku and the lesser-known "One Pound Gospel". I also got into Cyber Formula as a motorsport fan watching episodes on YT, but I haven't seen them all. Hearing the characters say/pronounce "Knight Schumacher" was both funny and slightly strange at once :D

I think Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle would have been after the manga and anime had been a success in the USA. Viz Media (not that the UK Viz!) promoted it a lot in their comics, I wonder if they had a hand in localising it (maybe not the USA box art). There is also that weird category of games that kept the license, but would have been fairly obscure at the time. Both Zillion games on the Master System keep everything intact. Area 88 seems to keep everything but the name, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure on Dreamcast, which was a few years before the OVA and Manga made it into English, let alone the explosion in popularity when the anime series came out.

Viz America indeed had a hand in localizing Hard Battle. Although Ranma 1/2 had already been a success at the time of Street Combat. I think Street Combat was more a matter of Irem America not believing anime licensed products would sell in the west. An attitude that prevailed for a long time.

Fist of the North Star got un-anime'd twice - one game on the SMS became "Black Belt" and another on Sega's later console became "Last Battle". The latter is especially noteworthy because they changed Kenshiro's name to the ludicrously nonsensical "Aardzak". This is especially funny in hindsight considering we also had an NES and a Game Boy game released here in the same timeframe that were mostly unchanged! How these games flew past you, we'll never know...

There was also an UY arcade game that was de-animed even in Japan due to some licensing issue (although the show's theme song was still in the game for some reason). When it came to the Famicom, they'd worked everything out and it was once again a UY game.

I didn't mind the sequel snes ranma game and even the first one was an enjoyable stop gap while we were waiting for Sf2 to release as I believe it came out before Sf2. I think there were some pretty decent anime based games but the only one that I can think of off the top of my head is un squadron which was based on the area 88 manga/anime.

France did have a lot of anime back in the 80's, Dragon Ball classic especially. They even used a translation of the French theme song for some Canadian dub of that series. Not that we weren't frustratingly close with the Harmony Gold dub that never sold but somehow was used for the basis of South American dubs. Then again, the way HG clung hard to Robotech, maybe it wasn't such a bad thing we had to wait for that one. Hell, Lionsgate held onto those first 13 episodes and Devil Castle movies for quite sometime themselves.

One big change they made in the north american release of Ranma Hard Battle was to re-record the voice samples for some reason! The Japanese release uses the original voice actors, but I don't think the Western version uses the dub actors. But either way almost none of the lines were changed/translated.

I think top-down racing works better with 16-bit offroad rally games, where the cars are racing at a relatively slower pace so there's more than enough time to react to curves and obstacles. That anime-based Cyber Formula (or whatever it was called) game just has futuristic race cars going at ridiculous Sonic the Hedgehog speeds so top-down is the worst view possible.

I feel compelled to remind people, as I often do regarding this "sportsball naming issue," that Soccer was the original name for the sport. It comes from the shorthand version of Association Football, coined because everyone was using different rules at the time and each ruleset had its own name. Association Football, the one that became popularly adopted, was just called "soccer" as a quick way to inform everyone what the rules were. Americans just continue to call it Soccer. It's technically more accurate to do so, but you guys are still mad that we won our Independence from you 250 years ago and you gotta get your jabs in when you can.

Calling either game "football" is correct, but "soccer" is closer to accurate as they are playing Association Football (played by Assocer's) unlike Gridiron Football (played on a gridiron lined field). Plus you have others like Rugby Football (codified at Rugby School in Rugby, Warwickshire) and Australian Rules Football (which is just a mugging done by teams on a cricket oval).

1:25 I mean technically speaking, Dragon Ball isn't. Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super are. The original Dragon Ball anime is only really popular with the non-English as a first language, avid and hardcore fans and for good reason, most people didn't watch it in EFL parts of the world until _after_ DBZ. The original Funimation dub broadcast of Dragon Ball only lasted _thirteen_ episodes before getting canned due to low ratings and the abhorrent Harmony Gold dub where all the names were changed like Goku to Zero (oddly including Penguin Village, even though in the Harmony Gold dub of Dr. Slump it kept its name) never got greenlit. To think there is a timeline where even EFL Dragon Ball fans got a "Grandma Goku" in the form of Rita Repusla herself, Barbra Goodson.

So, this is KIND of an instance of the American release "un-anime-ing" a game, but only in the sense of the game art and instruction manuals, etc. The game series "Bokura no Taiyou", which translates to "Our Sun", and was called "Boktai" over here, had 3 games on the GBA, and one on the DS. Boktai 1 and 2 got released over here, but Boktai 3 never did due to poor sales of the first two, so when Boktai DS came out, it was rebranded as "Lunar Knights" for its international release, the characters names were changed to cut ties to the rest of the series, hoping for a fresh start, and the art and promotional material was all changed, giving it a more "gothic" and edgy feel to it, which DOES clash with the game assets a little bit. The art still has anime influences, but is much more "serious" compared to the art and promo material for the original Japanese version.

One that baffled me was Fist of the North Star on the Sega Master System. There was a licensed game on the NES. There was a licensed game on the Genesis. But for some reason, the Master System version (hesitate to say "port" because all three were different games) was altered to become "Black Belt". The title screen displays some mook in a white gi, but if you know it used to be Kenshiro, you can tell someone just MS Painted over the existing pixel art to alter his clothes and hair. Odder still, the enemies still exploded into chunks, but less bloody and more cartoonish pixels like dropping a LEGO build on hardwood, and after dropping most bosses health to zero, Generic McBlandprotag is still scripted to take like half of them out with what is clearly the Hundred Crack Fist. There were even a couple of bosses who were *barely* altered from their licensed counterparts... one of which I think was originally supposed to be Shin. Can't remember: it has been ages since I played it. I just remember playing it as a kid and thinking how it felt like it was _trying_ to be Fist of the North Star, but later finding out the opposite- it WAS Fist of the North Star but wearing a trenchcoat and joke nose/mustache disguise glasses.

you forgot Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, known as Mashin Eiyuden Wataru (Or Spirit Hero Wataru) in Japan for the Turbografx-16/PC Engine, based on the anime of the same name. Also Decap Attack for the Genesis was known as Magical Hat no Buttobi Tabo! Daikoben (or Magical Hat's Turbo Flight! Adventure) in Japan on the Mega Drive, based on the Magical Hat anime.

It’s pretty understandable that America back in the 90s weren’t in the Kawai phase at that time,that it is today. Whenever a anime game that came outside from the Land of the Rising Sun,they’ll always going to alternate their Japanese counterpart and Westernise it. Crazy yet creative.

I remember playing that Captain Tsubasa game with my cousins who owned a NES back in '95. Funny thing is that it was in english with the japanese sprites, so I'm assuming it was the work of a hacker that wanted to exploit the huge popularity the series had here in México.

Street Combat is how I ended up finding out about Ranma 1/2. Well, someone’s angry letter about the changes made to the original game did. Ranma 1/2 ended up becoming the first anime I ever watched consciously knowing it was from Japan, and I also have the game today in both forms.

Another good example: The Famicom game GeGeGe no Kitaro - Yōkai Daimakyō (based on the long-running anime/manga franchise) was released in the west as Ninja Kid on the NES. I have the original Famicom game, and it's really good, though grueling at times.

Look, I get the Doki Doki Panic thing because they turned that game into one belonging to an existent popular franchise in the west, but why in the world would you turn a game into a generic one with new characters? How does that make more palatable to new audiences? What was the thought process here? American looking at Peacock King: "What? A game based on something I don't know? Disgusting!" American looking at Spellcaster: "What? A game based on something I don't know? Awesome!" I swear to God, executive decisions sometimes puzzle me to no end.

Because you had to pay more to keep the licensed characters than you did to edit them out. Since nobody knew either set of characters anyway, might as well save the money.

@@Mirality Ah, yes, that's a good point. Didn't think of that. I suppose they'd have to pay more for the license to distribute the game overseas than they would to just leave it in Japan. Then again, that's a bit conterintuitive, isn't it? You'd think that the owners of the license would prefer if their franchise got more exposure and maybe offer a discount. Though maybe they do and the publishers still didn't want to pay more.
