3:53 The "M and W" actually stands for "Magic and Wizards" rather than "Monsters and Wizards". Even more reason for the name to change to "Duel Monsters" later as "Magic and Wizards" is redundant. It also is a rather on the nose parody name for "Magic the Gathering" made by "Wizards of the Coast".

I think that's the main reason it would have gotten changed is because there's already Magic the Gathering (like having to change Magic cards to Spell cards )

@@CatsRul85 I mean, it was called Magic and Wizards because it was a not-so-subtle parody of Magic the Gathering(made by Wizards of the Coasts) because in the early days of the manga each chapter focused on a parody of real 90's fads that happened/was happening in Japan, each with their own unique villain.

I love that Exodia in your deck means you win. I never thought about the fact that you had to draw all cards and play one card every turn, so if you fill your deck with monsters, you can never have less than 5 cards in your hand and end the duel once you drew Exodia. Truly pay to win.
@LonelySpaceDetective
@LonelySpaceDetective 6 месяцев назад
It's actually even funnier than that. The rules never specify a limit on how many duplicates of a card you're allowed to have, so you in theory could have a deck with nothing _but_ Exodia cards.

I kind of want to see the Season 0 plot reimagined in the mainline anime (season 1 and later) style. The flashback in season 1 to the "mugger" that Atem mind-crushed kind of hinted at that, and it would have been interesting to see the original idea expressed in Takahashi's later style.

I miss the early Yu-Gi-Oh as well. I thought the manga was written so much better than the anime adaptation as well. The anime doesn’t realize that Bakura is a main villain for a long time, and they use him like a side character who pops up and does spoooooky things…. Meanwhile, if you read the manga, you get given bits and pieces of Bakura doing evil things behind the scenes. He shows up constantly and manipulates things from the shadows. The final game he plays with Yugi is amazing as well. It feel disconnected and out of nowhere if you only watch the anime, but it’s a perfect parallel to his first introduction in the series where he plays an RPG with Yugi and his friends. I think the manga even references that this game will be similar to their first, and that game never happened in the anime. Plus original Dark Yugi was a badass, and there was proper character development given to him to make him a mysterious character. The scene with Kaiba in Duelist Kingdom versus Dark Yugi also makes a lot more sense. There really wasn’t any reason for little Yugi to be afraid of the Dark Yugi in the anime version, but the audience has seen what Dark Yugi has done to people in the manga so it hits us harder as well.

I believe I may have figured out the rules a bit more. You both play the cards at the same time like war and not like most TCG's, each monster only has one attack and if they "crash" and don't get get destroyed, they are sort of left to the side and can be destroyed by the "ultimate" dragon and even reused by Tea's character card. to avoid not having monsters to play, you have to play low amount of spell and use Yugi to draw 3 cards.(Still not a single rule for "bricking" on spells)

The Mega Man Battle Network TCG didn't use life points either. You would "take damage" in the form of putting (X) cards from the top of your library into your "graveyard" until you've run out of cards in your library. The result being: play a deck based around Electroman (or at least, I think that was his name) which has effects that return cards from your graveyard back to your library, thus being the "best" deck to play because you had access to "healing" in a way. There are a lot of cards that can properly do this; but most of them were electric type, in effect narrowing how much you use this game mechanic. I've a lot of card games in my youth and for some reason this just stuck with me. Great, informative video! Thank you!💚

Konami recently printed an anniversary Dark Magician card that features artwork similar to the original Bandai Dark Magician, but with modern Konami colouring, and it's simply incredible.

I heard of season 0, but didn't know much about the carddass yugioh cards. Very awesome, and loved the tribute. I played from the beginning and collected the cards and games. I still have my collection and love them all. Had to pick up the Seto Kaiba 25th anniversary briefcase for the PC. Keep up the great work!

Fun fact that Jwittz missed, that wonky 4 piece blue eyes was a reference to that toei 'movie' he mentioned at the end. I recommend if you guys ever get the chance check it out, it's genuinely an interesting watch for many reasons.

Fun fact: Season 0 produced & animated by Toei Animation was aired on TV Asahi, which aired other Toei anime shows such as the Sailor Moon series & Slam Dunk.

6:33-6:35 I want point something out. The actual rule is: "Select 1 Monster Card from your hand and play it to start a Battle." This implies you HAVE to summon a monster. In fact in the manga, Kaiba automatically lost to Pegasus due to being unable to summon any monsters. So in order to prevent this from happening, you need to have less than 5 non-monster cards.

Tbh Carddass is called Card-Dasu, which is a pun for "Giving out Cards" which the machine does. I seen them but I never pulled the machine myself as I play some Bandai card games myself, loved card games from both companies anyways. But pretty informative (except Carddass/カードダス pronounciation)

Though you forget a lot of Japanese are dropping the "unnecessary" sounds, I'm pretty sure it's at least partially due to English being a mandatory language to learn, so if you showed that word to a Japanese person who never heard it said they'd likely drop the "u" sound and say it closer to what Jwittz says

Should do a video covering the game Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories for the ps1! It was in this weird spot, being more close to what the TCG is now, but still having some funky mechanics.

One of the weirdest things about this version of duel monsters to me is that in the manga they had life points the stars thing is something they made up.

I remember TRYING to play the card game by the rule book and got so frustrated with it that I settled to just collecting the cards instead along with Pokemon cards (no one in my school played the Pokemon TCG), and that's how I ended up with a giant collection of cards collecting dust in three binders on my shelf.

Hey TheJWittz. I really like your videos and I wanted to make a request. You previously did a video about Yugi's best and worst monsters. I really enjoyed that video and wondered if you could do a similar video about Joey/kaiba's best and worst monsters. I hope your having a good week. Take care.

I've considered it! I need to double-check and see if they have enough games/cards/data to sort through. The other protagonists (GX, 5DS, etc) DEFINITELY have a lot of games under their belts, though...

I noticed that Fire Emblem Cipher card back at the start... I'd never heard of that Konami Gameboy Yugioh game that kickstarted everything, so this was a fascinating bit of history. Don't know if that ever came out in the west.

We later got the third game in the series; called Dark Duel Stories over here, and The Sacred Stones and Reshef of Destruction are also later entries (The Eternal Duelist Soul, Stairway to the Destined Duel and the World Championship Tournament games are also technically part of the same series, but those games follow the full OCG rules unlike the other games so I don't really count them). GX Academy might be part of the series as well; it has "Duel Monsters" in its Japanese name, but I don't really know anything about that game. It also had a pair of spin-offs that included Forbidden Memories (the only game of the two to play remotely like the GB games) and The Duelists of the Roses, and a sort of "sister" game in The Falsebound Kingdom which reused assets from TDotR. Apparently the fourth game is set to be localized in a retro YGO game collection Konami's announced, which is neat.

The effect of Elegant Egotist is actually explained, but you have to look at the text of “Harpie Lady 2” and “Harpie Lady 3”. It’s more like Elegant Egotist is part of the cost needed for their effects.

Hey Jwittz, it's a well known fact that you like niche as well as popular CCGs. Have you heard of Redline: Tactical Card Combat? The front half it's a variant on Magic the Gathering's Commander format, the backhalf it's Mecha fighting in simultaneous combat over a set of objectives, trying to control everything or run the enemy out of resources. I've played it and it's pretty good, feeling both similar and different than MTG in a variety of ways.
