I don't know what chart you looked at but when hardened properly to specs, Magna Cut far out last s45v in edge retention. When it first came out, and still to today, many manufacturers/makers are running Magna Cut at 58-60 HRc. It is designed to be run at HRc 63-64 and when this is done, it far exceeds s45v. Remember, s30v was replaced by CRK because it was a little chippy. (when improperly used) so they heat treated it at a low number. The replacement was s35v which did not have the edge retention of s30v. That and they ran it low in hardness as well. . Many complained at the lack of performance. They switched to s45v and ran it a little harder to help with the issue, however it still did not equal the edge retention of the original s30v. None of these are capable of matching Magna Cut in edge holding when properly heat treated and as a bonus is much tougher. KnifeMaker/retired with over 47 years in the business.
Yeah, but sadly it’s rare to get good magnacut at 63-64. As far as playing the odds, S45VN might be a safer bet in some instances. But yeah you’re right, when magnacut is done properly it kicks ass! I’m blown away by the magnacut on my Roosevelt
Glad you’re pleased! I can’t tell the difference from S45VN or Magnacut, even with some extreme use, you’ll never know the difference. Premium metals these days are awesome… 😊
Lovely choice. I got both the large and small sebenza 31 in magnacut, matching macassar ebony inlays. I alternate them for EDC sometimes, but normally I carry both.
I just got me a PJ magnacut Seb 31 large - so happy with it. I've used my small Seb31 inlay w/magnacut as EDC for a year and it has been a beast of a blade. Cuts and cuts and comes back just as you show here on my suede strop loaded w/white bark river chalk to razor edge. My other 120 knives have been sidelined by this magnacut small seb so I got the large to see if I can give the small a rest. MAGNACUT FOR THE WIN.
Dood, MagnaCut also gives really nice toughness and the heat treat on the CRKs is supposed to be top notch, I don’t think it’s a bad deal at all to get at the same price as the S45VN
Not big on the inlays but man it is such a clean design overall. I love the hump in the blade over the thumb stud. The design language is just a homerun...
The factory Sebenza edge is convex. It will get thinner BTE and more slicey as you sharpen it. If you run your finger and thumb down the hollow towards the edge you can feel it gets slightly thicker just before the edge bevel.
Nice review! Really comprehensive and informative man. Do you prefer the micarta over the wood inlays and PJ options? Why did you choose this variation?
@@doodysdaggers got cha. I actually just watched your video about selling your 31 right after this 😂. I have a pj 31 and I do feel the smallest bit of lock rock on it. I’m surprised I never noticed it before. It’s one of those things that will most likely go unnoticed unless someone mentions it. Idk how I feel about it now
A nice new addition to the colleccion’ 👍. I like using a wharncliffe blade a lot too . Anything with a lower tip really . Definitely not a tip pointing to the moon tho .
Mine, (Sebenza 31 Magnacut, Macassar Ebony, Drop point), wasn't sharp when I got it new....(it would slice 'puter paper, but that was it), so I put a 20 Degree edge on it With the new Worksharp Pro Precision Adjust machine, and HOLY CRAPPAGE ! it will now easily slice phonebook paper, and shave your arm dry.....Huge Difference.....went to 800 grit, then a few strokes with the Ceramic on each side, (4-5), then stropped it LIGHTLY, (3-4 strokes), each side and it's Literally RAZOR sharp !......OnWard.......
That sounds amazing! I’m tempted to put mine on my Worksharp too, I just didn’t want to waste steel. But I think I will. It’s got an awesome sharpening choil so it’ll be fine
LMAO😂😅 Dood u used your sh#t, so glad your happy with it after dropping that amount of $ , I would have been so let down n disappointed if my grail knife didn't live up to my expectations. Congrats brother keep on keeping on .
CastleGate is a good shop, live nearby and they’re great in person. They’re often overlooked despite being an authorized dealer. One of the only places that regularly has plain janes in stock.
The sentiment for not enjoying carrying knives that don’t slice well I share. I had tried to give the XM-18 some chances; eventually leading from a regular spearpoint one to the a skinny slicer grind one. And even the skinny slicer XM-18 had trouble cutting through the most pedestrian of things. Sold it and don’t think I’ll give any of em another chance. I know this is a CRK video but I had to mention this since the Xm-18 and Sebenza are usually brought up in the conversation of great American knives.
I felt the same way about the XM18. But I love the knife! So I sent it to BGM Knives to get reground. He did an amazing job, but a nice hollow grind on it. So that’s always an option if you love the knife but wish it was slicier
Oh really? Okay that would be the best option. I’m going to try a leather lanyard and see if I like it. I also don’t really want just a hole right there. Thanks dood 🤘
The tiniest drop of grease stops the rattling. I didn’t even take mine apart. Just a little grease on a pin point and gently pushed it in and the rattling stopped. Be even easier to get that grease in if you had it apart though.
Besides Spyderco, CRK does the best factory edges in the business in my experience. Their convex edge is nasty and will hold for a long time in either S45VN or MC. Just picked up a large Insingo in MC and it may be my favorite model from them, especially the large with the Insingo. Congrats on the blade!
@@doodysdaggers definitely, and when you send it in for a spa treatment you can have them re-establish the convex grind if you want, I have a hard time sharpening convex so I had them re-establish mine and it was just like new!
Thanks for responding! I have a large Sebenza in magnacut with black micarta Inlays in my cart right now, but hesitant to pull the trigger @ $600? I love my new TRM Atom in textured Ti scales that has not left my pocket for the last 4 weeks since getting it. I don't use my knives like you do everyday. I'm mostly a light user. But the knife collector in me really wants this CRK Sebenza in magnacut!!! Please Help Dood!!
@@BDevi0us there will be many more releases of the Sebenza in magnacut for sure. They do sell out fast though, but if you’re up on the drops you should be able to get one. I’m not positive on what inlay they’ll be though
I’ve carried a large plain Jane 21 s35vn drop point for the past 11 years. Just finally sold it and switched to a large 31 tanto carbon fiber Magnacut. Edge retention I don’t notice a lock of a difference. But it’s an ounce lighter and won’t corrode on the salt water. Not a huge fan of the ceramic ball lock interface but so far it’s good. I would prefer the 21s lock interface.
