Chris Reeve Sebenza 21 Carbon Fiber Large Knife Review & Torture Test

The Chris Reeve Sebenza is recommended as the best production folding knife, and in this review I will fully “field” (torture) test and use the carbon fiber Knifeart.com exclusive variant. I’ll cut up tomatoes, baton, bash through a avacado seed and probably make some bad jokes. You'll see comparisons to the Spyderco Para Military 2, Benchmade 940-1, and Benchmade 765.
Several Sebenza 21 trim options at BladeHQ: shrsl.com/15406
If you’d like to buy this particular version check out Knifearts website:

@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 5 лет назад
While I’m not ready to sell it... I’d think hard about it again. My advice if you need to scratch that itch is to buy one used from someone on Reddit’s r knife swap or somewhere else on the secondary market. You see many many sebenzas get resold over there. Remember when Luke went into the cave on dogobah... and Yoda told him that the only thing in that cave is what you take with you. Your enjoyment of a sebenza is about 40% of what you bring with you. It’s a fine knife, but you can find many other knives that do what it does.

This really is the best Sebanza review on the RU-vids. Really good job Mr. H.!I must mention that anyone looking for a Sebanza-esque knife who thinks the large is too large and the small is too small - and that both are grossly overpriced - may check out the Land (Sanrenmu) 9103 and 9104. Same general shape as the Sebanz' but with milled out stainless steel, ball bearings, Sanvik blade, and a price of less than 20 USD.

Yeah those Sanrenmu clones are alright... this one is a little lighter than those, but they're still a great value.

The topic of Sebenzas!
@ToxicityAssured
@ToxicityAssured 7 лет назад
It's more so that someone finally used one "hard" instead of opening, closing and talking while slicing phone book paper. It's not so much Sebenza, but the topic of actually using these ~$400 well built knives. The reason I say this elevated your status is due to the fact we know you will speak the truth about any knife. You didn't kiss it's ass or falsely criticize it. You proved your ability to provided honest feedback, which wasn't much in question. Thanks for taking the 4-6hrs it took to make this.
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 7 лет назад
+ToxicityAssured I mix it up some... some videos I beat the crap out of a knife- others I don't. I felt like this one deserved the royal treatment though... and even though I paid a lot for it- I mostly bought it for the channel and my own curiosity. And as far as those tough stances people take in videos, just to talk some shit for the clicks- you probably won't see me do that. I try to logically approach stuff, cover all the points I notice and let people decide. Like batoning... I didn't do that so I could prove the lock would fail once... I know that most frame locks will under those circumstances. I don't really consider that a problem- but I get a kick out of it... and if it's someone's perogative to not like it based upon that it's fine. And if someone thinks that's a stupid test, that's fine too.

CRK changed their heat treat to 59-60 in mid 2013, but the cards weren't updated until early 2016 (guessing they didn't want to waste their stock of pre-printed cards) Source: CRK customer service. That said, I can't keep it sharp to save my life. I have $20 chinese folders made of mystery steel that hold an edge longer. Maybe I'm just not sharpening it correctly.

Not sure why many people call the Sebenza the finest production knife, but I have my theories. There are others that I prefer, Rockstead for one. With that said, while I agree with and respect your opinion on the knife, the price is mostly determined in this case by the production quality. The Sebenza is an exceedingly simple knife, but it is also exceedingly well made. I have 2 Sebenzas, and both are absolutely perfect in every way. Almost every Spyderco I have ever purchased has had in perfections to it. Bladeplay and off center blade in my Para 2, same in my Military. I even got a Resilience with a grind that was waaaay off. The smooth deployment of the Sebenza isn't meant to be fast, but as you mentioned, just smooth. They call it a bank vault feel. This is intentional. When I first got my Sebenza, I was also underwhelmed, but with time, and especially after collecting a few more (ok, a lot more) knives, I grew to appreciate the quality of the Sebenza more and more. If I had to change one thing, it would be that damn thumb stud. Why they made it come to a point is beyond me. Great review! Side note: If you do try out a Hinderer or Strider kniife next, don't expect much. Nice designs, but execution ain't all that. ZT makes better Hinderers than Hinder does.
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 7 лет назад
+Rob Adams to me there's nothing that exciting about those knives... they're too heavy for me to drop that kind of money on. I mean I don't hate heavy knives- but if I'm paying a few hundred bucks for something it's gotta be something I don't mind carrying at work. The Sebenza is nice... I don't see any problems with it on close inspection... but my PM2 is like that too- great blade centering and no QC issues either. I'm definitely not the guy to take a microscope to the blade though- so it's possible the Sebenza isn't made for me... but as evidenced by all the threads I peruse on the internet- there is a market for perfectionists.
@robadams2274
@robadams2274 7 лет назад
I am a fan of the design of both Hinderer and Strider knives, but the quality just isn't there, not for the price they are asking. Especially Strider, IMO. I really like my Sebenza. It is a different kind of knife than what Spyderco makes, and it's appeal is basically the build quality. While I do appreciate the minimalism to a degree, the design is nothing to get excited about. I do tend to nitpick fit and finish issues a bit much, which is likely why knives such as the Sebenza appeal to me. Have you had any quality issues with your Benchmades? I have had 3 Benchmade knives, all of which were very poorly made. I like the design of the 940, but hard to drop that much money on a knife that will likely be far less than perfect.
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 7 лет назад
I have seen some uneven grinds... centering has all been pretty good for me though. Deployment and lock up are good... and they usually come pretty sharp. Again though, I don't inspect them in super detail. I check for centering, lockup, and then just use them. Never had any deployment issues, or anything like that either.

I felt like coming up with something mean to say and that's what I ended up with. I love this channel and while I don't take the reviews too seriously I absolutely appreciate the detail and work you put into the quality of your filming and writing. The titanium held up much better than I thought... but repeated spine whacks on a harder wood, does (logically) have long term effects. I basically try to get people to watch my videos through a combination of unexpected things, good editing, and jokes.

Ahhh at last we come to the Sebenza. This was inevitable I suppose. And yet another honest knife reviewer arrives at the conclusion that it's pretty good, pretty boring, and grossly overpriced. Gonna pick up an xm-18 next? Or a strider sng? You know it's the next logical step. I do look forward to your take on those, but mostly I'd rather see some more wacky fun with budget imports or other high speed low drag tactical gear being put through its paces by an advanced operator AKB!
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 7 лет назад
+marshalllaw123 no more knives more than $455 for me. I don't see any value in them... unless of course they're donated to me. NO effing way am I paying $475 for knives weighing over 4 ounces. 2 years late but i've used mine for years in a salty environment in New Zealand, and for fishing and other things. completely fine as long as you rinse it in fresh water at the end of the day. a good thing about using grease, not oil + an open design is that you can just put it into a bowl of warm soapy water and shake it to wash. dont need to dissasemble that often

It's ok, but still didn't really break in like my other knives. If say my 940-1 and PM2 break in fairly easy and not my Sebenza, why should I give it slack? Because I paid more?
@mforrest1508
@mforrest1508 6 лет назад
Advanced Knife Bro yeah pretty much. But those famous tolerances that cr is known for require a break in period. I have 2 pm2 and 2 940. They are favorites of mine. They are free blades. Not smooth really. Kind of. It’s just not a fair comparison really. I think if you give it time you will see. Take it apart clean it a few times. There are reasons why it is so popular. It just doesn’t have the fidget factor of the pm2 or 940.

You mentioned fixed blades and hatchets as more suitable for batoning. I suggest if you must baton with a folding knife just unlock the blade and then baton the blade. Why damage a lock that wasn't made for such abuse? There is no need for a blade to be locked when driving it into wood with a hammering blow. Nice video.

When Cold Steel did that stupid comparison to the Sebenza on their channel that was the final point in deciding to get a sebenza. Also on deciding which brand not to buy as they are clearly focus on things that aren't really important.
@AdvancedKnifeBro

Their channel is stupid knife tricks... it helps inspire me a little. But yeah... their smack talk lock reviews are ridiculous. I have to fast forward because they go on too long.
@alittleolder
@alittleolder 7 лет назад
I think I unsbscribed from the channel because the comparisons to better knives that had "normal" locks und could only hold 250 lbs just angered me. But the Sebenza is a special one because you can see on his face that he's not happy doing this and that he's kind of embarrased to do this to CR.

You're not supposed to loosen a pivot on a sebenza. It has a pivot bushing so you can't really control action feel by adjusting it, unless you want to distort your slabs. If you want it smoother polish up the washers on the sides that face the blade.
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 7 лет назад
Great to know. I review the knives as they come from the factory. So if a $450 knife needs a smoother deployment (in my opinion) I feel the viewer needs to know, how it is out of the box. I also mentioned that I wouldn't recommend loosening it too. I have a small collection of about 50 knives... this being my most expensive. I really don't carry it that often.

You just confirmed why I need a large 21. This knife is the reason I don’t own high end folders. I have to get it 1st and then I’d not want any other also. I see the value in the simplicity along with it being a family owned and ran company. Add the fact that Chris even bothered to care enough to co create the steel.

I have the carbon fiber wave pattern 21 .doesn't have any markings but d2 on the blade ( 58-60 hrc ) $45.00 .it is much lighter ! Mine is faster to deploy than this one and you can drop the blade ( after some tuning ) bent the pocket clip into the inkosi angle !

It handled that batoning abuse well enough, but I've had similar thoughts about the value of these knives. They are good, but about 50% more expensive than what I'm reluctantly comfortable with to pay for a good knife that'll last long. I've been close to considering to buy one of them with both sides titatium handle in the past. But since I had the luxery of handling a few in a store and comparing first impressions side by side my preference went to a Benchmade 940 at the time (the standard green aluminium one in CPM s30v). Both that one and the recent replacement 940-1 felt like they were worth the money. I do know that some people claim to occasionally have issues with Benchmade knives that the grind is uneven, not centered and things like that. However considering I was able to handle both knives and give them a quick inspection I that wasn't a concern to me. Knives can be badly centered out of the factory but I've also seen it happen a few times to due to the pivot not being tight enough. Either just due to use or intentionally to make them easier to open, haven't seen a badly centered benchmade so far other than the pivot tightening issue. I've probably had about 5-7 owned by others in my hands at times because people asked me to sharpen them and then my own two (940 and 940-1).
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 7 лет назад
+Extra stuff I agree about the 940s... a knife that feels worth the money. I didn't quite pay the full 940 price... but I still paid in the high hundreds. The Sebenza is nice, but it doesn't have the fun factor of those other two knives.
@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531
I don't see what all the hype is about the sebenza either though I do have to disagree with you on the sebenza faring better then your Benchmade or Spyderco I believe the Benchmade would have done better than the sebenza I would like to see you do the same exact video with your 940. 👍

I love my sebenza. It’s a great knife and it’s in my top 4 with my para 2 s35vn, my griptillian g10 and of course my 940-2. Your right 400+ for a pocket, I mean folder is a little much, but I bought mine “used” and now it’s getting the “spa treatment”. (I’m picturing my knife in a hot tub or getting a back rub with cucumber slices over it little eyes)

Well the lock held up very well, a lot better than in the cold steel lock strength testing. Good video.
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 6 лет назад
One thing to note... I’ve seen those videos. Those weights are well beyond any scenario that these knives would encounter. Cold steel locks are built above and beyond what most people would need. It’d be like if cold steel built an armored car... and shot it with an RPG. Then shot a regular car with a 5 star crash rating with one. The Cold steel would survive, but the regular car wouldn’t. Do regular people need armored cars? Nothing wrong with Cold Steel overbuilding locks... but at what point is too much too much?
@oxman1800
@oxman1800 6 лет назад
Advanced Knife Bro Thanks for the reply. That’s a good analogy about the cars. I love cold steel and think it is awesome that they have approached fixed blade strength with their ingenious lock design. That being said, of course it’s overkill for a folder, however having a voyager in your pocket that you could successfully process firewood with is pretty badass. Anyway, on those videos the sebenza did awful, I think it failed the weight hang at 25lbs, which I don’t understand. I have tried to close mine with as much hand pressure as I could muster and the lock didn’t budge (hands out of the way of course.) Never batoned through firewood though lol. I think you’re one of the only youtubers to demonstrated the lock strength of the sebenza.
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 6 лет назад
Shit, it was only 25? I dunno. There may be some advantage to batoning, because there’s always a force working against the baton- the wood. I have no idea why anyone would need to baton with a sebenza, but at least mine held up.

Yeah, CR knives are pricey. I played with a Sebenza when they first came out, but didn't like it's action feel and large size. A few months ago I wanted to try a smaller knife, so I bought a lightly used small Inkosi Insingo. It was $315 in the box with the usual stuff. Unfortunately it feels cramped and uncomfortable with all of the points, finger groove and the frame lock's edges and corners. I also prefer an easier opening knife. So, It's in the cabinet with all the others that didn't make it to the pocket brigade. Keep banging on those knives!
