Brilliant drive mate. Love the positivity! Will be doing a similar road trip in April, driving the same road from Dong Van to Bao Lac although I wasn't planning in attempting the shortcut after mid day, so congratz to you.

Thanks! It got dark pretty quickly. I'm just about to go on my next adventure to Laos, checking out some loops in the sun hopefully

The monument at 3:58 is the monument to the people who built this road across the mountains.

The Hmong people came from China , but they moved to VN , Laos , Thailand long long time ago . After the VN war , many of them had moved to the US ( Missouri , Colorado , Oregon , etc...)

@@mikeyctravels The Tây also came from China then settled down in many northern provinces of VN like Cao Bang , Lang Son , Bac Can , Ha Giang ...Actually my cousin-in-law is a Tây from Cao Bang

@@hungcuongnguyen293 About a thousand of years ago, a group of folks who defied the Chinese government exiled on the land and became Vietnamese. The same happened with Taiwan. The current Vietnamese language was founded by a French missionary. That’s the reason Vietnamese language is written in alphabet characters. Vietnam could be nicer and better if the people stopped throwing garbage everywhere and the people would be more honest, practiced food safety and sanitation.

@@nocancelcultureaccepted9316 What you said about the Vietnamese people and language is not accurate . In the past , some chinese migrants had moved to the Red River ( Song Hong ) region and were assimilated by the local inhabitants (the Lac Viêt ) to form a new people who were not even 10% Han . The Taiwanese are actually almost 100 % Han and all speak chinese , while not even 2% of the Vietnamese speak that language . Before the arrival of the chinese , the Lac Viet people already had their own language and in the 11th century their own writing ( Chu Nom ) . FYI the Vietnamese language was not created by Alexandre de Rhodes . This French missionary only used the Latin alphabet to transcribe phonetically the Vietnamese language in order to facilitate the evangelisation work of the European missionaries during the 18th and 19th centuries . Afterwards the Vietnamese found that new writing was much more convenient and easier to read and to write than the old one so they adopted it as their national writing (Chu Quoc Ngu) . You should do better researches about Vietnam , before telling falsenesses and stupidities dude . If you are chinese just learn that the Vietnamese people love the chineses like the Ukrainians love the Russians . haha

Beautiful country. Those bikes were a perfect way to travel . I liked you did not screw your nose up at eating local food. Life in many respects is still simple on the farms living like they have always done but I wander how soon that will change?

Thanks for your comments! I love to try new foods at every opportunity! I wondered about that question myself. A lot of the older generation are on the farms and the younger generation often go to study and want a different lifestyle.

the "plant" is not technically Marijuana, but come from the same family, i guess. The local tribal use them to dye their handmade clothes, give it indigo-ish color. Cheer!

I am enjoying this road trip, beautiful scenery. Can't help to think "what if" roads built like race track like Nurgbering in Germany, I would love it. Vietnam should legalize weed like Netherland, USA, Canada and now Thailand, Vietnam would be the next Amsterdam.

the plant you see in ha Giang is not a cannabis plant it is a plant that people use its bark to weave cloth and the Vietnamese government will not allow the cultivation and sale of cannabis plants
