Yes, it's a linguistic phenomenon called 'code switching'. I speak predominantly English and Afrikaans, with minor Xhosa words and phrases, and we will, in one sentence, switch between languages, as we find some ideas are better expressed in a specific language.

"No electricity = no running water" means that our 'sister-friend' lives in a property where tap water pressure has to be augmented by an electric water pump! Plain and simple 🤷‍♀ It's not common in the urban areas, but we have the same in my rural homestead: the reticulation tanks' water (popularly known as 'Jojo tanks') supply has to be pumped into the house's water pipes. Providing context is important 😏

As a South African I can tell you that we don't really use "right now". If we say now, we usually mean in a few minutes. Just now is less than now now. Just now is like "okay I'll wash the dishes after I finish this glass of water or this conversation" so anywhere from 10mins to maybe half an hour and now now is like, "nah I'll do it after this movie" so maybe in like 30mins to 2hours. There isn't really a set time, it is measured by whatever we feel like it means 😂

The reason why there are no electric outlets and the light switch is outside is for safety reasons. Electricity and water don't go well together as people can get electrocuted while locked in the bathroom. For hair etc. they tend to have what they call a 'dressing table' (vanity set) in the bedroom where you have a seat and mirror to beautify yourself.

They still use cheques in the US. I literally had to order them, and you don’t just get one at a time, you get a whole stack of them - most of which I never even got to use. They made me get cheques because they don’t give people their banking details so you can transfer money to them. Instead they want YOUR details and will be the ones taking money out of your account. Whaaaat??? Someone used an account of an institution to buy of porn, because one can just put a debit through your account unless you tell the bank to turn that feature off. Load shedding usually happens when there is pressure on the power grid, meaning not enough electricity is being generated at a point in time for the use of the entire populace. Thus the electricity will have to be disrupted from time to time to conserve power until the problem is fixed. In Ghana, there was a point in time when we experienced Load shedding for a number of years

Things have changed even since I was a kid in the 80's as an Aussie. I remember visiting My Mum's Cousin and his family. They'd decided to visit the beach 🏖 so we kids would just climb into the back of the station wagon if there weren't enough seats. Back then you wouldn't get into trouble with the Police. When I was in my late teens/early 20's My Sister's family moved to a country town in Far North Queensland. I loved visiting that town, My Nephew who's 8 months younger than me had a large group of friends who were real people persons. They had crazy senses of humour and were so much fun to hang out with. I remember piling into the back of a truck and going to a local swimming hole. Without any trouble. But as an adult I can definitely understand why it's a bad idea, what if there was an accident. Another reason I loved visiting that town was parting until as late as 3 am. I still have friends from back then. But life happens so most of them are married and settled down these days.

The remote jammers use a regular powered gate remote to jam your car's key. They simply hold down any button on the power gate remote when you're about to lock your car, and the signal from that remote jams the signal from your key. I tested this myself with my own car, and it's so easy it's scary. You have to make it a habit to physically check that the doors are actually locked before you walk away from your vheicle.

Our load shedding is 4 hours a day twice a day, and the electricity is used for the borehole to get water

There is only shaver sockets aloud which is 110v in bathrooms cause of safety. We have 240v supply and with moisture it will get into the socket and switches , water and electricity dont mix. But you can put a Pullcord if you wanna have a switch inside. America will have outlets cause yall supply is 110v not 240v.

This lady seems to be based in a rural setting like a farm. The water pump issue??? She sounds like a drama queen. About load shedding, it's very annoying. South Africa living with this for this long has been misserable. We are all losing our marbles over it. Happy New Year everyone.

@@ianbeddowes5362 Old farm neighbourhoods for sure. I'm from Pretoria, almost 50, lived in various suburbs and houses older than myself. In fact I'm in the real estate industry. Her life is definitely in the rural unserviced kind of setup.

As I said, if SA had continued with the RDP programme and {LANNED instead of listening to the west and the 'Free Market', we would not now be suffering. After all we belong to BRICS. Our government must commit to BRICS insteadof having one foot in the western camp and suffering for it.

Loadshedding is not part of life. We have long breaks in between, and then they start again. Right now the problem is that our better coal is being sold to Europe and bad coal is being delivered to Eskom by rogue service providers who make more money sending it overseas. The bad coal causes break downs, so they say but other than that they are also manufacturing consent to sell off the entity and privatize it. Re the sockets and light switches, it is also a culture shock for us in the US.

She’s not over exaggerating for where she’s from. Also just a huge review: I have spent this year watching you discover uk and oz and KNOWING that South Africa was for you, please keep it up - it’s hard to find great content as people but it’s there. My mother and I spent two or more hours on Xmas day watching you on tv learning about our countries and it made our whole day🥰 thank you so much for your hard work and openness.

17:41 can be true too, National Parks in Kenya have electric fence to keep away wild animals, but in the city, the rich are just afraid of the poor.
