Throughout southern Africa, 'Coloured' means mixed race. The coloured communities, especially in the Cape, especially Western Cape , Northern Cape and Eastern Cape have their own distinct culture. They mostly speak Afrikaans but have their distinct accent, even when they speak English.

@rigbyrigbone5407 Год назад
@@edwinbooysen2120 Ian Beddowes is correct, he refers to the region of Southern Africa which encompasses other countries where there is a coloured community, like Zimbabwe for instance, where anyone that is mixed race is referred to as coloured. As for South African coloureds, he only said they speak Afrikaans with a twang and have their own culture. Whether that culture or genetic pool is Khoi, San or Griqua is subject to debate but I am sure that not every coloured person will agree with you that the term is exclusive to the group you describe.

I know the guys said that his eaten black people and white people food and now is eating colored people’s food. The lady said we(I’m colored) don’t eat pap which is the white maize meal. Well we do. Everybody eats everything in SA. Though I think you’ll find that colored people strictly eat hot cross buns and pickled fish on Easter Friday. The cape colored is definitely a very unique part of the colored people in SA. We r the rainbow nation after all. Much love. But everyone eats everything.

Lol no in the cape we don't eat pap. I tried it for the first time when I moved to Pretoria In 2016. We never grew up with it. Besides maze porridge for breakfast occasionally. But with milk and sugar as a porridge. We would eat our meals either with rice or potato or bread and often rotis etc. Never pap.and I think it's how it is in cape Town.

I'm Zambian and when I have conversations with Americans I use the term "biracial" or "mixed". But when talking amongst my family and fellow Southern Africans I use the term "Coloured". We don't believe in depriving coloured people of half of their genetic make up like in the US where biracials are seen as black. That as y'all know was supremesist rhetoric. Y'all are welcome to come to Zambia me. 🇿🇲

My Great grandmother on my mothers side was also from the Isle of St Helena. She married a British man, and 3 of their 8 children passed for white, my grandmother being one of them. My gran married a white Danish man, and because of Apartheid, tried to keep my mom and her brother from mixing with her side of the family, for fear of repercussions. My mom and uncle would sneak off to visit their Ma whenever they could, and I grew up eating a lot of Cape Malay dishes. I love the culture and food so much - its such an inherent part of me, even though I look like a German tourist.

Coloured are Asian-Caucasian-African. Louisiana creoles also have some miscellaneous Asian influence historically. In the Cape, the natives were put in the Native Reserves (rebranded as "homelands" in the 20th century) along the ever-expanding EASTERN frontier of the Cape colony. The in-colony population was filled with external VOC (and later British colony) labour from Asian & European imports, African slaves, as well as many of the Xhosas from the Native Reserves. This formed the Coloured population.

After reading through a lot of the comments, I think that we should have a Q&A about what WE consider to be coloured in SA. As a coloured myself, and having the privilege of traveling and living in all 9 provinces, I think the comments made me realize how devided, yet United we are on this topic. What MY experiences has taught me, is that between the 9 provinces, we're all unique in the way we preserve the culture. The 1 thing we have in common "in MY opinion", is the fact that we all speak Afrikaans. But like I said, this needs another conversation where we can express what WE see as what makes you coloured

English is the most language that we use as communication if don't know the other languages so that we understand each other. All this languages are all included on our national anthem. There are a lot of similarities between Cape Coloureds/Cape Malays and Creole people due to the European colonial era. Native East/Southern Africans and Southeast Asians mixed with Dutch & Portuguese settlers produced a creolized population.

@valentineisraelshabangu4069
Now you capping just because Europeans divided us according to skin tone as Africans you will also post bile. Look for example pearl thusi, Thuli phongolo and many others especially Xhosa and tswanas are lighter skinned than many coloureds but they are black of which I say bullshit to your statements or observation. Black Americans are proud of their blackness. They don't doubt it.

Whaaaaaaaat ???????? So West Africans , Central Africans , East Africans are also coloured then ? If so then why did our freedom fighters and their Civil Rights leaders unite as fellow blacks during apartheid ? And what exactly do you mean when you say "black like our black people here " ? What South African standard is this that you're talking about ? Is this the standard that made it abhorrent to be black or brown skinned or purely African with no mix of other races ? The standard that promoted colourism and made darker blacks subhuman ? Also the majority of blacks are actually lighter than many coloureds but identify as pure black because they are not interested in tracing the reasons for their complexion which we know aren't something to be rpoud in many instances . Again I ask what does "black like our black people here " mean ?

@17:43 Epiphany. Here's a history of "coloured" that you won't find in books and that as aresult many are not aware of. "Coloured" origins has nothing to do with "mixed". When the Spanish came out here, before the Portuguese or even the Dutch, they brought with them their own "assistants" whom they would occasionaly refer to as "colored", for obvious reasons. And the rest, as they say, is history.. This is the exact way that coloureds are referred to as 'Maphusumane' to black South Africans.. came from how the coloured folk would almost always have the words "jou poes man" come out of their mouths when they speak.
