The king of Eswatini announced the renaming right before we did a major system migration at the company where I was working at the time. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why the new system had suddenly lost Swaziland (since the import had worked fine when we tested it the previous week) before I thought to look up the country and found the news articles about the name change.

I got 177, and it is funny how many of the ones I missed were the first ones in their region that you thought of: Jordan, Honduras, Ghana, Ivory Coast... also laughed at your repeated attempts to spell Uruguay. Persistence pays off!

Oh man, Matt, this is My Thing, thank you for delivering the content we want! I spent way too many hours a few years ago getting to 100% on locating and naming them all, and... I'm nerdy enough to admit I refresh my skills every few months. It's honestly been helpful though, I feel like my idea of the world is a bit fuller plus I'm now known as "the friend who's aces at the countries category on Pointless and has funny mnemonics for where tiny island nations are" It's funny how little many of us know about the world outside of the parts that are personally relevant to us...

It always bothers me when it expects you to spell something "correctly" when it's an flawed romanization anyway. Like, there nothing that inherently makes "Kazakhstan" the only correct spelling in our latin alphabet.

K and Kh are separate Cyrillic letters, so that’s not a great example.

Except that it's Казахстан (Kazakhstan) in Russian and the kh represents [x], a h-like sound pronounced at the same place in the mouth as k (many English speakers have it in their pronunciation of ugh) Kazakhstan can be considered more valid since the English orthography very often tries to preserve sound distinctions of the source language, even when the English speakers can't make those distinctions in speech

@@ragnkja That consonant is sometimes Q, sometimes K and sometimes G (it's the beginning of Gadafy's name). Modern Standard Arabic is K, IIRC, but Arabic isn't really one language and the local version in Qatar may well be enough different from the version in Kuwait to justify the spelling difference (yes, that's the same consonant)

been doing the sporcle thing for a few weeks now, and even after quite some practice my best score is 194. There's sooooo many little island nations that are just hard to place on a map, especially on this one where the names can be quite far away from the actual countries. You did pretty okay for going in blind!

Hi, US American here, I did the quiz before watching the video (like I did w/the Europe one, where I got 100%), and got 93% on this one, or 183/197 countries. Can't say I like how the quiz is set up on Sporcle though, the JetPunk version is a lot more visually appealing and easy to use. Keep up the good content Matt!

I tried this quiz once on the last day of my school term a few years ago, when we had a whole bunch of free periods before assembly. I found that 15 minutes is less time than it feels like, and certainly isn't enough to get very far with this quiz with my slow-ass typing. (I got 155 this time round)

Canadian here: I too went in absolutely cold. Though I had watched your European effort a few days ago so I have no excuse for some of the European ones (North Macedonia?) that I missed. I got only 105, and that was with my son + wife stepping in during the last five minutes and helping with about 10. As for countries to visit, NZ is on the "someday" list. Crazy expensive to fly halfway around the world though. I should aim for more Europe, it's a lot easier to get to.

I'm a Brit too, got 95% (187 out of 197). I typed very fast, but still couldn't get them all in the time allowed. I think it's virtually impossible to get 100% in 15 minutes. Also, this must be ridiculously hard for people who's first language isn't English.

I managed 190 but I had a spell a fee months ago where i used to play it repeatedly! Islands in oceania and the Caribbean (and costa rica) were my weak points! I reckon you'll get a similar score!

I expect Matt to get about two-thirds. I took it myself and got 192/197, but also I have the unfair advantage of that I was a bookish kid who took to memorizing the map at an early age, so it comes to me very easily. I missed Antigua and Barbuda, St Lucia, Palau, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu

I was so excited but probably had unreasonable expectations. The countries are like naming my siblings. I do it in 5 mins 50 secs (my best). The capitals are much harder for me, especially the Caribbean ones reck me along with the same 4-5 African ones.

This was more fun to watch than I expected it to be. I have a question: I noticed that you were a lot more confident with countries that were formerly part of the British empire. Is this (or, say, decolonization) something that's covered in school over there, or was it just a coincidence?

got the same percentage, but with more in correct in africa and more gaps in central/southern america. Also managed to miss Italy & Cyprus mostly due to how small the map is I just couldn't figure out what I'd not put in europe

American here: I think I would have done better naming central/south American countries (because this is drilled into us in our Spanish language classes for some reason), and much *much* worse in Eastern Europe and Africa. Saying Americans only know what's inside the country is a little unfair though... most Americans I know can name most of the states bordering the Pacific/Atlantic, but have a hard time with anything in the middle :-D

On the previous video there were some people who complained that this is all "just naming" the countries, like it's easy. I have done this type of quiz before on Seterra, where it gives you all the names and you have to place them. I got that one to about 90% (Sorry to the Pacific and Caribbean island nations. I can never quite remember them all correctly :[ ). Meanwhile, on this one I only got to 70%. There were a few that I knew where I just couldn't remember the correct spelling (sorry Kyrgyzstan, I forgot about your Z), but ultimately I just hit a point where I could not think of any more names, even though they were all "so obvious" in hindsight. (edit: Typo)

I think I have a decent accuracy in recognizing if something is a real country or made up, but that's about it. For half of them I couldn't even tell you which continent they belong to.
