Soooo thankful you posted this, Yami! I’ve seen others use it, too and contemplated. I would’ve used the product you used since spray in a house is no joke, but I’m thinking those with the most success used the spray version. Thank you for sharing!

Most Rustoleum paints and primers can be recoated ONLY within 1 hour or after 24 hours (some 48 hours). If you don't follow this rule, the second coat will cause the first coat to pull away -- DISASTER. When Rustoleum says that you can recoat within an hour, they really mean that you should FINISH recoating before the hour is up. It's unlikely that you complied with this rule (which is hard to do under any circumstances) because you spent time trying to smooth the first coat before applying the second. Also, trying to remove tiny bubbles with a hair dryer may have shortened your working time window even more. I learned this this rule the hard way myself. Now I NEVER attempt to recoat any Rustoleum paint product until after waiting the full 24 (or 48) hours. Even if it's a small project, you never know if your phone will ring or some other little thing will cause you to miss that window. Hope this helps someone.

Well you tried. I believe the problem started with the “pouring” of the product as opposed to applying a thin layer as the directions indicated. Also, applying a second application before the first layer dried only complicated the problem. The first application actually looked pretty nice. But it was not a total failure. You ended up with a NEW countertop and a valuable experience. Lesson learned. Thanks for sharing. 😊
@galady8632
@galady8632 Год назад
The first time I utilized this product I had excellent results. My first coat was so thin it was blotchy. Of course it dried quickly. When I saw you pouring product on the surface I thought 'no way is that a thin coat!'. Thin coats allow the proper chemical reactions that leads to faster and thorough drying and curing times.
@jswap1
@jswap1 Год назад
2 problems and they reinforced each other: - sand the bare countertop first so the paint can adhere better - you said to put a thin first coat on, then started literally pouring the paint on. With a thin coat, you'll see lots of the countertop showing through. This is what you want.
@makeit2649
@makeit2649 2 месяца назад
Agreed, this so-called "fail" was a result of not following the very basic instructions to do a very thin coat. She even admitted she was putting on "a nice thick coat." Then she started adding a second coat more than one hour and less than 24 hours after the first one. Folks, don't expect the product to work if you don't follow instructions.

I wished I had saw this before I got the idea to repaint my kitchen sink. As you, I've done many DIY projects in my old age and this is something I've never done. But after researching and watching countless video on other people's success, I did my kitchen sink. Followed the instructions, waited a WEEK (7 days) before using my sink (yes, while I lived here) and my sink looked amazing for about a couple months, then, because of the high usage, the paint/epoxy started pealing and now my sink looks worse than it did before I painted it. So, thank you for your honestly. I didn't see any negative result video before I started, which I wish people would post so they will know it always don't go as planned!!! Cheers!

I did this and it worked great! Used the spray can version of this same paint and it gave an excellent consistent finish. I used 120 grit to rough up the surface first and used plastic sheeting to cover everything in the bathroom as it dioes throw overspray. One can did the trick with lots left over. I sprayed the surface probably 5 times. It looks great.

Thank you so much for putting out this video and being honest. I was going to try to save money and do the same thing to my personal bathroom’s countertop. I had decided to put my money into the main bathroom that everyone uses and then just DIY mine. I was going to paint my countertop with the Epoxy and just paint the cabinets. I won’t be doing it now. I will probably still paint the cabinets and drawers, but I think I will just move to buying a new countertop and sinks. I do believe that the other people that say it was perfect most of the time it’s not as perfect as they say but they just put that out on their video. All thr work you and your husband have been doing Has been wonderful and I guess this is just the one time it didn’t turn out. Don’t be discouraged, you regrouped and made a plan and that’s what you needed to do. But again I do appreciate your honesty and really letting everybody know the real things that happen in all of your DIYs. It is not always a bed of roses.

I recently DIYed my sink with the Rustoleum appliance epoxy spray since I have my sink top oitside. Ended up using 2 cans due to some trial and error, sanding, and bugs. Overall the two cans cost about $20 and it turned out pretty good BUT I do notice that something, likely toothpaste residue or soap residue, has caused some areas to wear away the epoxy. Will likely need to apply another layer of epoxy but this time will not paint it on since the sink is now installed inside.

@@TheLatinaNextDoor The spray was so easy and did an amazingly smooth job. The actual painting part takes no more than 5-8 minutes, spraying evenly 12 inches from surface. It’s the prep time with sanding & masking that takes the most time. *Wear a mask!* 😊

I have used this product in all 3 of my bathrooms. I followed the instructions to the letter. I think where you went wrong is thinking that the first thin coat wasn't enough and you then poured on the first coat where you shouldn't have. So because your thick coat at one hour would just slide off so to speak. Those are only my thoughts. I had excellent results. Less is more type of thing. I am really sorry it didn't work for you.

Heads up! First, I want to thank you for doing the video as I learned a lot in the comments..I just did my sink with the first coat very thin using a narrow paint tray and a sponge roller..I used a 2 in brush to do the outer areas and the corners first then filled in the rest with the sponge..immediately repeated the process for a total of two coats..stuck around to catch any drips with the hour..there were none as there were thin coats but would rolled them if there were..or brushed them if in a corner..when I did use the brush, I rolled after if the roller fit..my sink is beautiful and looks like ceramic..it can be done..just go slow..stay focused and time yourself..thin coats, watch for drips within 1 hr. and leave it alone. It does work. I sanded first. Thank you for this video!!🤓

Great video thanks! I have been trying to decide what to do with a small bathroom countertop of my own. I have heard good things and bad things about the Rustoleum Paint and haven’t been able to make up my mind whether or not to try it or just replace the countertop. I have also been considering using an epoxy that I could just pour over the countertop like I’ve seen in videos for kitchen countertops. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I generally LOVE Rustoleum products but honestly I tried their floor paint kit on my studio floor, painting it white like an old farmhouse floor. I hate it. I even called Rustoleum and spoke to customer service but they weren’t much help. Now I have way too much “junk” in my studio to repaint the entire floor again! 🤦🏼‍♀️. Ain’t nobody got time for that! Lol Please post an updated on this project to let us know how it weathers over time “as is”. I’m interested in knowing if and where it chips, peels, or stains. TIA! 🥰

First off, I'm so sorry you had to go through this frustration and appreciate you still sharing to expose those that made it sound so easy and wonderful. Mom folks always told me if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. As Natalee said, even when it does go right, it doesn't last long. Products that are formulated for certain surfaces, in this case enamel painted metal appliances, don't always work well on other surfaces. I do wish in your case it would have worked out. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your bathroom remodel. May the rest go perfectly.

I appreciate you showing what doesn't work as opposed to what one sees on 99+% of RU-vid videos. As you learned, one has to be VERY careful reading the instructions provided by the manufactured on the cans of paint. There is a BIG difference between dry to the touch (e.g. 1 hour for a thin coat), dry enough to handle (24 hours, again for a thin coat) and fully cured. Again - drying time is not curing time - they are 2 different things. Usually paint cans DO NOT tell you the time time it takes for paint to fully cure, which can be up to a week for oil-base paints and epoxy paint. Luckily, this information can sometimes be available on-line. I have found the best way to apply this paint is thin coats applied with an airbrush or airless sprayer. Like any paint or epoxy glue, the thicker it is, the longer it takes to cure and the manufacturer-supplied instruction are for paint applied in thin coats like they say on the can.

Next year, we want to pull the tub out and have a walk in tiled shower and since we cannot afford this project yet, I thought painting the surround would be good. Have you or anyone used this product to paint your surround or used any other product that might work?

I’m glad you showed this to us although I’m sorry you had to spend extra money. We resurfaced a bathtub once and it was a lot of work for what you got in the end. It lasted about five years and we then put in a new tub. Thanks for showing us what works and what doesn’t. Thanks Yami

I’m definitely happy that it gave you 5 years though! It may not be for all but sometimes it’s okay to have a temporary fix 🥰

You are adorable! I tried once to paint a countertop in my powder room becasue I saw a lot of You tube on it. Its been a few years and it is peeling. It's small so I am getting it replaced. But I had considered using the epoxy in my master where I have actually two separate vanities with the continuous counter sink combo. Well not any more😆

what do you think about using this product on old pink glazed tile, located on the walls (not in the shower or water areas) do you think it may hold up?

Stonecoat countertop resin works amazing. They have very instructional videos. With any coating you need rough up the surface or use a bonding primer to get the new layer to adhere. Dry time is slowed by temperature as well and can even cause it not to cure if it’s not seventy or above.

Never heard of them! It’s a little too late now for this project but I’ll check them out in the future. ☺️

YES!!! I have done ALL of my counter tops in my house and some furniture tops too. I looove Stone Coat Countertops!!! They are AWESOME!!! They have phenomenal customer service if you need help or have questions. Go watch their videos, you will fall in love with them. My countertops have held up well for over a year now. So worth it!!! AND FUN!! 😁 I'm sorry that your Countertops turned out that way but I'm glad that you shared your fail. 😉

I had a sink unit like this, it's composit stone to look like marble or whatever....you can't paint it and putting a cleaner that's caustic will make it porous. Well done for sharing. Hope you like the new sink.
