Very useful video. I think a small, refillable spray bottle filled with alcohol could work nicely too. The gardener pruned my David Austin and infected it. I seriously doubt he cares about desinfecting the pruners. I had to cut it back further, every time I cut my heart bleeds. Now I see one tiny bud growing on it. I want to jump on it with a glass cover, and roar like the Beast. Stay away! Thanks for the useful video again.

The painter's cup is an awesome idea. I already have a few in the house because I'm currently painting. I have been carrying around a spray bottle with diluted 91% so it doesn't evaporate too quickly, but I have only been spraying when I switch to a different bush/plant unless I'm cutting out weeds. Then I'll spray before switching to a plant I want to keep. Using a painter's cup will probably be a bit easier. I've been tossing the cut stuff into the yard, but some of it falls to the base of the plant. Guess I should start taking a 5 gallon bucket with me to put the cuttings in. I recently bought 5 acres and it has a good size rose garden in the front along with an "orchard" on the other side that has a lot of fruit trees. Unfortunately, no one was taking care of the plants for at least a year between the previous owner passing away and me buying the property, so all the plants are in pretty rough shape. One rose bush had a single cane that was over 10ft long poking through a magnolia tree because the tree was overgrown and the rosebush was struggling to get sunlight. 😮 I clipped back the magnolia to let light in for the rosebush and cut down that crazy long cane. Most of what I have been doing has been cutting away overgrowth and deadheading to encourage more flowers but I've noticed that a lot of the branches look dead/dormant except on many of them there is new growth way higher up on what looks to be a dead branch. I'm worried about cutting the whole branch to the base because of the healthy new growth higher up. Should I cut those branches off? Are they an example of dieback like shown in the video, but if it is left untreated? Most of these bushes are over 5ft tall, but I have slowly cut them back while deadheading because I didn't want to stress them too much by removing too many leaves. How far down can I cut them without having any problems if they are that large? I've also been mulching all the tree branches I've cut from all over the yard and using them for the flower bed. Some of the rose clippings have been mulched as well. So far, I've only put the mulch in a new flower bed on the side of the house that I've seeded with butterfly/hummingbird garden mix. I figured mulching the branches is better than trying to dispose of them in another way because between the fruit trees and everything else, I'd probably be able to fill an industrial dumpster by the time I'm done. Is there something I can do to sanitize my scraps before mulching them so I can continue using them in my flowerbeds without spreading potential diseases?

Love that sanitizing method! For awhile isopropyl was almost impossible to find online but it's plentiful again. Anyway, I have a few extra bottles I was going to use for hands if hand sanitizer ran out again but now I know what to do with it!

Thanks for your video. Ive seen a rosebush I really like at my local store that's half price due to being old stock and it has some die back on a couple of canes. After watching this, Im going to buy it and take a chance on it. 🙂

This video just came up in my recommended and perfect timing. I had no knowledge of rose dieback and I definitely see that on a couple of my roses. I’m in the same zone as you…is this something you can prune off at any point relatively safely? Or do you need to wait until a certain time of year?

I had been using alcohol between rose plants but not every cut…… thanks for pointing out that it’s every cut! Simple Stuff can getcha! 😂

Thanks so much for this video! I just followed your advice, and I hope and pray that my rose bush survives. Honestly, I haven't had to do much to it in the past four years that I've had it, and it's always come back so beautifully. But this year, I was getting antsy because I feel like it should already be back (though I might be wrong). Anyway, it did have some dieback, and I hope that getting rid of it makes the difference. There were a couple of little buds on it, so fingers crossed!

I don't know what is wrong with my beds. I definitely have die back. It's 100 degrees here in South Texas. Pruning this hard may be deadly. I don't know. I grew over 100 bushes at one time and have never seen this. I think I should treat the bed itself. I have seen a lot of webbing and some sort of bug or spider. I don't have spider mites, I know what they look like. Do you have any suggestions? My whole bed looks terrible.

I cut and dieback starts again for me it didn't stop. I cut and cut to the fresh part till nothing is left. I even sealed the top with nail polish, or turmeric, or cinnamon powder nothing worked.

Which kind of alchohol to use?
