Today, on day 95, we are talking about our perennial dianthus plant. It's Friday, so this is our "Plant Chat" day and we talk about easy best care tips for brightly colored, low-growing, easy to care for plant.

always good to hear from other gardeners but i often wonder why you tubers done tell us on ever video what Zone and country they are in, As we all know the plant will or will not survive in different zones, I recently bought some Dianthus for a sunny location under my Ornamental grasses and driveway edge. But you show them in pots and i think you said 8 years? spacing is saying 12 inches or 30 cm and if your pot is 8 years old and hasnt grown out of the pot yet this may not be the plant i want here after all? Be great if you could say a bit more about why its in a pot what it would do in the ground and where you are

I just planted a few near a fence....in the fall ..as they are perennials in my area how do i cut back or prune them so they grow back nice after dnow melts, or should i prune in spring

Hello guys I just purchased this plant at Lowe’s and was wanting to plant them in my entryway of my home and since this is my first home and first time doing some gardening. I wanted to see what advice you all can give me that I can take while planting this on the ground. What should I add to my soil and area before planting them down and how far apart should they be?

Hi Raquel! 👋 Very exciting that you have new Dianthus plants for your home entrance. Woohoo! We would make sure it is in an open, full sun location (for at least 5 hours of the day, if not longer) and that it is planted in well-draining soil (neutral to slightly more alkaline or higher pH; more on this below). If you aren't sure about your soil, before planting your new dianthus plants dig a small hole in your entrance garden bed and then pour into the hole 1/4 or 1/2 a gallon of water (or some other measured amount) and watch how fast it drains down. Repeat pouring the same amount of water in the hole a couple more times and watch how fast the water drains. If you think it drains slowly (the water doesn't drain all the way until about 10-15 minutes), then you might need to modify your soil so it drains faster, as dianthus are susceptible to rot diseases from being in too wet of soil conditions. They like moist soil, but not continuously boggy or mucky conditions. If you need to improve your soil drainage, try not only to improve the soil for your dianthus plants, but include the rest of your planting bed so you don't have isolated "buckets" of well-draining soil surrounded by poorly draining soil. Start by adding 1/2 inch of general compost to your existing soil and mix that in with a shovel or rake so it's evenly mixed. Then you can plant your new plants. If you need to raise the pH of your soil, Lime is easy to add (follow the label directions on the bag 😉) and can be found at most Lowes, Home Depot, or local nurseries. Wow, that was a lot! Mine is all brown and I don’t know what to do when I’m in basket and I come out beautiful then and took the heads off them and just wanted to come back should I throw it or shall I cut it right down back and just wait till next year I will about the snow and coldness and frost will it kill them to be look like a dead to be mine I want to buy some more next year because it’s not very good now that beautiful I’m really chuffed with him I didn’t even know about this planted to the bought it from supermarket I thought I’ll take two of these put in one of these hanging basket come up beautifulNo I can’t wait to get some more of your writing plant pot hanging up or not hanging basket and they were on the ground can you put them in the ground to not quite sure about his Adams first you have ever ever had them thank you thank you for your help please tell us if I should throw the flowers away or cut him down and wait till next year or SlenderMan I have some more I don’t know what to do very brown and dad they look dead you know I think it all day but you get the odd flower coming out of it a go it’s not dead but it is nothing I don’t know what to think help thank you I’ve described Please help me thank you

What liquid do you get me to feed them? I want to get the right foods. I can keep mind going because I’ve lost them in this horrible first this year. I’ve gone all green and brown show about. Took them out and replaced with new ones and I’m trying to improve on it can you help and tell me what food tech to give the liquid food and it is peach miracle Gro peach 300 purpose compost is that alright for these or is it the wrong soil for these type of plant. Can you answer these messages and let me know please soon as possible. Thank you

This is my first time,trying to grow Anything. I pulled what looked like a dead plant out of a Lowe’s trash bin. I gave it some water and it came back snd bloomed a little flower , beautiful, so I gotta keep this little guy going, what does regular watering mean? Water every day or every other day? This guy was in the smallest container you can get when you buy at Lowe’s

Hi John! 👋 That's sooo awesome you are going plants and that you literally save this little plant from a dumpster. Wow! 😲🙏 Great question! Regular watering means that a plant needs to water on a regular basis and that the soil around it's roots should be kept moist as consistently as possible, BUT not soggy or boggy. This is different than "moderate" or "infrequent" watering, which is exactly as it sounds. A good example of "regular watering" is if a plant tag says "needs regular watering", then you just need to make sure that the soil around your plants roots are kept moist. If you check the soil every couple of days with your finger and it's not moist, then you need to water it. Hope that helps and thanks for watching! 👍😉

These really DO split easily and are pretty impossible to kill. Have you noticed them growing with their roots actually above the soil? My only guess why is the hard rains we can get in the springtime that just pound the soil away??? We initially had just one growing in our garden bed about 7 years ago and they have reseeded themselves in all sorts of random spots. I always meant to transplant them so they look more "organized" but forget each summer and am now knee deep in other garden projects. 😅 My biggest complaint of the dianthus is they are slug magnets...worse than any other flower for us (with the exception of our thyme...do you guys have a particular slug magnet flower in your garden?). We have the low growing dianthus also and I'd rather have the blooms you can cut for vases but didn't know there was ever a difference 🤦‍♀️😂

Hi Natalie! 👋 That's interesting about the plant roots being visible. The hard rains could definitely be contributing to this. We have had a lot this year, it seems anyway. (the sky just opens up, ugh) Without taking a physical look at it or doing some soil digging to explore what's happening below your plant roots, it's hard to really nail it down, but keeping soil drainage and the expansion of your plants roots front and center when you garden could help with what you are seeing. Adding over time compost or sandy-types of soil, along with addressing any shallow hard-pan issues directly below your plants could help. These are just some things to think about and maybe try. 😉 Easy fix for future hard rains: you could minimize any soil erosion from harder rains by placing 1-2 inches (2-4 is best) of mulch around and up each plant (2-inches from plant stems so it doesn't lead to other issues). The seeding all over is great and we hear ya on to-do lists for garden projects. Almost everything this year in our garden is a slug-magnet, it seems. This year we have seen soo many. What has worked for us is the repetitive application of Sluggo and making sure we get a 2+ inch perimeter around each plant on the ground and also around each potted plant on the ground. Oh, as a close friend does every morning and has inspired us to start doing, we will go on the occasional slug-hunt to physically remove slugs. @@SpokenGarden I slug hunt every night (I'm that crazy lady with a headlamp at 3am gathering slugs😂...seriously!) Have you noticed that it is impossible right now to find any tipe of "slug bait"?...Amazon won't have the "Sluggo Plus" (which I prefer) until late July now! I can't believe it! And both Lowe's and Home Depot were out of EVERY TYPE of slug killer! It's got to have something to do with the covid-19 slowing down production? Have you guys had a hard time finding it too?

Hi Eileen! 👋 Dianthus are great plant to add to your garden. 😃👍 We have had similar situations happen to us, too. 😲😊 You definitely have a couple of options: If your "shaded" location gets partial sun during the day, the you could be ok. Dianthus generally need around 6-hours of full sun exposure, but can tolerate partial shade. Another option is to plant or transplant your dianthus into a container/pot where you can then move it at-will to sunnier locations around your home/deck/property so it can get that full sun exposure. If either of these aren't possible, you might consider returning your plant to the nursery or store and possibly buying a different plant that could fit in your shady location. How do you winter over your dianthus?

HI KW! 👋 Great question! This can be dependent on your hardiness zone. We are in zone 8b and we overwinter our potted dianthus by bringing it up close to our house so it gets residual heat and is out of most wind. If you live in a hardiness zone lower than what dianthus is hardy to (4-8), you will need to protect your plants. If you can't bring them close to your house or a building, then heeling-in your potted plants is the next best thing.
