Lughnasadh or Lammas is a celebration of abundance, the moment in which the grains that will serve as food during the winter are collected.
It is the time of the first harvest, and of the seeds that will ensure the future harvest. Symbolically speaking and according to Wiccan belief, Lughnasadh is the time when the God is losing his strength.
Lughnasadh is the first of three harvests of the Wiccan year wheel of the Year and the third Fire Festival of the year (greater sabbats). Typically, it begins on sunset on July 31. (Southern Hemisphere: February 1st).
'Lammas' was the medieval Christian name of the celebration, which means 'loaf-mass', since on this date loaves of bread made with the grain of the first harvest, which were offered in the altar. Likewise, straw dolls were made. It was a representative day of the first fruits.
The land was honored for its fertility, for a job well done. The celebration had a double purpose: to celebrate the efforts made and ask the gods for a good harvest in the future.
Lugh is the messenger of the gods, the mythical son of the goddess Don, the one who gives name to cities such as London, Lyon (Lugo), and later in the medieval legend of Arthur, he was represented by the hero Lancelot.
