Hey, really liked the video. I bought some knitting needles a few weeks ago and this encouraged me to actually use them. I do have a question, how long did it take to make the cardigan? The only thing im scared of is it taking too long.
@ikoxun
@ikoxun Год назад
@@sarahmodalla i’ve gotten faster to where i could finish it in 3 days, but for the first cardigan it took me about a week due to a lot of tension making my hands hurt & how slow i was knitting since it was my first time in a while. and that’s about 5-7 hours a day😬

As someone who's been knitting for about 10 years now, it's always fun and interesting watching people learn how to knit! Its fun and complicated but making something by hand is always very rewarding. Some advice for the newbies, after you learn the basic of casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch and binding off, *PLEASE LEARN GAUGE* . I know it seems complicated, but it is _vital_ when it comes to customizing patterns. Sheep and Stitch did an AMAZING video on how to understand gauge. It will allow you to use different yarns and needle combinations based off of the pattern's measurements. Starting off with hats and cardigans is great because these pieces are made of a bunch of squares and are easy to measure!

AFTER TRIAL AND ERA I REALIZED HOW IMPORTANT GAUGING IS (i have more learning of gauging!) This is so beautiful because once u learn gauge swatch and how many inches is per stitch your life becomes way easier. Hopefully over the years I can improve my learning in knitting because I am a baby knitter!💗

I'm very new to knitting and I'm planning on making a cardigan. Could you tell me what gauge is? I tried looking online, but I'm still very confused.
@jasperchappel9379
@jasperchappel9379 Год назад
@@dandelions_are_cool gauge means how many stitches and rows it takes to reach a certain size. Yarn labels (and sometimes patterns) include a gauge that usually looks like, for example: 8 rows × 8 stitches = 2 inches × 2 inches, or cm if you're not in the US. This way you can test it by seeing if 8 rows × 8 stitches equals 2 × 2 inches for you in a sample square, and you can guess (or do the math) on how much yarn you'll need to complete your project, if you know how big you want it! Hope that helps xx

Tip for how to make fitted cardigans more comfortable under the arm: Add an extra panel for the side of the body, between the armpit and the bottom hem. We are three dimensional, and this extra panel will better mimic the shape of your body. The thicker you are, the wider this side panel needs to be. If you study sewing or at sweater patterns, the majority feature extra side depth for his reason. The extra side panels will also make the front panels meet closer on the front, since you are adding to the overall circumference.

Hey gurl. As a knitter who started knitting the English way ( as you are here) I learned from Arne and Carlos on RU-vid how to knit the Norwegian style which is similar to like how I crochet it is so much faster than the English style of knitting and you have a more ergonomic handhold on the needles which makes it so that your hands aren't as stress you don't get that twitchy feeling when you're trying to sleep and you knitted too much. Not trying to tell you what to do or anything but since you brought my crojo back I figured maybe you might like that tip It might help in the future in your endeavors in knitting cuz I know it helped me

Good use of stitch markers. I find that a lot of folks new to knitting underestimate how insanely helpful they are in so many situations. I hope mastering knitting is a fun process for you. Ravelry has been a great place for me to find new patterns to try out new techniques if that's something you want to explore. do remember to take breaks and stretch your wrists, etc. I can't wait to see what this new yarn skill brings to your designs. Your crochet stuff is so inventive and fun I look forward to seeing what you do with knitting, or even combining the 2 techniques. edit: i LOVE the look of the super slouchy bois you made for your friends. i think i might have to use up some of my stash to make me one of those!

If you’re hurting you need to get a wrist brace (or two) and give your hands a break for a day or two. You don’t want to give yourself carpal tunnel or a repetitive stress injury! I second what a lot of people are saying to try to learn continental knitting. I learned to knit first but I’ve hear from a lot of people who learned crochet that it was easier to pick up continental (working yarn in opposite hand of working needle) than English (working yarn and needle in the same hand). It will seriously increase your speed and make it easier to not grip it so tight. I’ll add it to the reply but the lady I learned to continental knit from on YT did an excellent job of explaining as well as explaining what to look for when looking for other tutorials for techniques. There’s lots of different reasons to do different cast ons! It can just make the edge more stretchy or firm or can just give it a different look. There’s also a different cast on needed for toe up socks or top down hats since you need to start with one row so it’s closed off but then immediately switch to knitting in the round. I started off learning the long tail as well but more recently discovered the knit cast on which I find is much easier and makes the edge look much neater. You also don’t have to guess how much yarn you’re going to need to cast on before hand. You just need a long enough tail to be able to weave in. I also recently learned that most cast ons have a knit and a purl version and you can even mix them in the same cast on to make the cast on more cohesive with the rest of the piece. I’ve yet to try it but one of these days lol. Sorry for the whole essay but hopefully it helps someone

Oh man! Welcome (back) to knitting, and I see you found out pretty quickly how intense it can get... Your cardigans definitely look better than my first go-arounds at garments, though - I like the third one of the most. I would definitely recommend learning to gauge and block sooner than later though, and that's coming from someone who hates it. The way I think about it, I consider it a minor annoyance now for the certainty of a fitted garment later... and then if you're making stuff in the exact same needle size and yarn, you don't have to do it again. That, plus learning how to magic loop, have saved me a lot of hassle. And caused me a lot of hassle. But mostly saved me. You know how it goes... I'm steadily working my way through my attempt to do a patchwork cardigan like yours in knitting. Four patches down, like... eighty more to go. Fingers crossed to get it done before fall really starts!

I just finished my knit patchwork cardigan this summer. How are you knitting yours? I did my squares in a mix of broken rib and the seed stitch. I ended up actually crocheting the ribbing directly on the cardigan for the button band and the collar, but doing it separately and sewing it on so I could get a poofy sleeve for the cuffs and bottom ribbing. I recently purchased some circular needles and am knitting a cable knit sweater. I've never made one before, but I'm having a lot of fun. I'll have to look up what magic loop is; I've only just figured out how to cast on properly. I've apparently been doing it wrong... I hope you're able to complete it before it starts getting cold!

@@journeyhoreis I'm doing stockinette for the panels - I thought about varying stitches on them, but i realized that they might end up slightly different sizes then and that it might look too busy, also. Probably going to do the button band/collar by just picking up stitches, and I think I could get the poofy sleeve effect that way too - you'd just immediately start knitting stitches together. Same goes for the bottom ribbing too, although I'm not sure if I want it to be poofy like that. Magic loop is really useful for anything circular! I've used it for some nice cowls. Best of luck on your sweater! I haven't tried cabling yet, but I'd like to one day.

very good job explaining casting on for someone with no knitting experience! I picked it up within seconds compared to the eternity during my first foray months ago 😂
