I will second that motion. "here ye here ye !!" Especially when he wiped his plate off with his napkin. That was funny though. She was plain faced for a few seconds then she giggled. Very adorable.

Traditionally bread pudding can also be served with a lemon or orange sauce. One of the reasons recipes were so vague is that most cooks learned to cook from the time they were big enough to stand on a box by the table ( I even did so when I was a child) and when it called for something like a strong gravy the cooks like my grammy just knew how to make one, she never used a recipe for gravy, sauces or biscuits and she could measure by eye or the palm of her hand, however that was rural living so it was sort of traditional to teach children to cook even in more modern times because help was needed to feed all hands. Recipes started being very precise when people sort of stopped teaching kids how to cook because mothers living in urban areas were entering the workforce in greater numbers and just couldn't work a full day and spend long hours in the kitchen as was once done and it changed the way meals were prepared.

I like to use the left over rice to make rice pudding that has exactly the same milk egg and sugar you used to make the bread pudding! Love your channels makes my day when times are tough :)

I saw your bread pudding and had to try it. I have coco nibs, so I warmed the milk and added the nibs. When it was dark brown I strained the milk and cooled it. Then I mixed in the eggs and spices. I used home made bread. I added currents and candied cranberries. (it's all I had). My 3 brothers ate the whole thing in like 15 minutes. It's a fantastic recipe. Justine you really know how to inspire people. Your smile is so wonderful brights up the whole day. Take care you two and thanks for all your hard work. The videos are perfect. We made ice cream with a ice cream churn. Yes, it was a crank. The tub was wooden. It made the best ice cream. We liked peach ice cream. We lived in Ga. We would get fruit that was almost too ripe. Sweeter that way.

We used the crank as well in TN. When my dad got remarried my stepmom got an electric. We soon learned that it worked much better with a crank. I had a friend that would start with a electric and end with a crank.

Another delicious meal by Justine! A few suggestions, if I may. Make a nice gravy out of the broth from cooking the chicken and celery. Make a rue from butter and flour and cook nice and brown. Add the broth, stir until smooth, cook to thicken. Salt, pepper, sage, and a pinch of nutmeg. You know how it's done, Justine. Yummy! It would make the rice and chicken even more tasty. It also sounds like you might need to invest in some peppermint tea for your tummies. It's also very refreshing for an after dinner drink. I was also thinking a bit of warmed maple syrup on the snippet pudding would be nice. I agree, Justine. A recipe is just a template for the cooking artist to make into her own special creation. Ron, you are so blessed to have such a great cook for your partner. As always, you both do great! Love your program! ❤ God bless! Sue 😊

I love eating with my hands. They are the utensils/ napkins god blessed us with. In the south, we would lick our fingers before using a napkin. So nothing was wasted.

My ancestors came to "The New World" pre America from England back in the 17 century. They might have brought some spices and foods with them on the ship. I have no idea. Do you have any 17th century reciepes?

Justine, just grow peppermint. It is so easy to grow, almost invasive. I grow it in a pot so it doesn't take over the whole garden. There are many varieties of peppermint too... regular peppermint, pineapple mint, chocolate peppermint and more... It's time to plant a garden Justine. A kitchen garden would make a great video. Let's see... you can plant Onions, garlic, parsley, sage, and much more... Peppermint, lavender... I know you have some favorite things to plant. Best thing is to get plant starts or cuttings from your friends. That is very traditional.

Oh, yes, mint is very invasive and grows like a weed. Not sure if they had any additional varieties, like chocolate or orange mints, but they are quite lovely. I have grown a variety. They are especially nice infused in water during the summertime. German chamomile is nice, too. Lavender and roses. All these can blend to made lovely teas. I really love growing a variety of herbs. Fresh English thyme, sage, Savory are all quite lovely to have on hand, especially for chicken dishes. Different varieties of basil, greek oregano, rosemary and parsley. An herb garden is a very nice addition to a home. I'm not sure exactly what early 19th century ones would have had. Probably some of what I listed. I lived in VA and visited Jefferson's home. As an inventor, as well as a declaration writer, he did a lot of experimenting with plants. Here's a nice article about that. It's strawberry season in California already, they are ripe, and very sweet this year. I love cold, fresh celery but I'm not a huge fan of cooked celery but I'd try it, I love to use Celery seed when I'm cooking. I was taught that ask long as you are eating "food on the bone" like chicken legs, wings, ribs etc. it's okay to pick it up with your fingers and eat it, licking your fingers however is frowned upon, that's what napkins are made for. Thanks for sharing this one with us.

We had a rooster that kept attacking by 12 year old daughter. After flying up to her face and scratching it near her eye, we had to end up harvesting Ray. I told my daughter he got a piece of you and you got a piece back. But it had to be done. We got a surprise chick from our hatchery. He was a Cochin rooster. He is a gentle giant that wants to do a dance next to his hens or us. He is definitely a keeper.

My Grandmother bread pudding had a vanilla rum sauce that called for many eggs so you could make it now that you have chickens!! It was like flavored vanilla pudding.

I often make bread pudding, but add a combination of raisins and craisins. Alcohol in your eggs and milk might curdle the milk before it gets backed.

I found The first fork positively identified in America belonged to the famous Puritan, John Winthrop, founder of the Massachusetts Bay colony, who arrived in 1630. You had to be well-off to have even one fork and downright rich to have enough to serve your guests - which most of the founding fathers were. I watch all your channels and i have seen every one of your shows. Ron is bringing bad memories back for me because i would get in deep trouble if i held my fork or spoon like, as my mom would say, a three year old learning to scoop their food to their mouth.. I lived for ten years without a refrigerator and you can safely eat things for around three days before they go bad. If I make a stew and boil it once everyday, it will last forever. There’s a knack to it because when it gets thick and you didn’t add enough liquid, it will stick to the bottom and you have to transfer it to another cooking pot without scraping the burnt bit off the bottom! :-)

Yes, my Daddy chopped wood all year so we would have it all winter. Best time to chop wood is Fall.

My Grandpa Ivan was born in 1896. He ate with a spoon, knife, and bread. He also drank his coffee or tea from a saucer and always with cream and sugar. He shaved with a straight razor every day. He told me about cattle drives from when he was a kid. Weird I know.

I love watching the making of the meal and then listening to you 2 talk. 🙂 Would you show us how they would have made cottage cheese balls and new potatoes and peas creamed together, please? I'm curious, I read a book recently and this was a meal eaten by the heroine.
