Is this new workflow of use to you? Which options do you see yourself using? Just the ones FCP makes available or are you more interested in using your own, externally generated proxies and what will they look like? And if you find anything I may have missed or you have a question, let us know here in the comments! Thanks for watching!

wow thanks so much for this - I suddenly got a notification that my 1TB Mba was full - all because I was working with original media/optimized media and not creating a proxy. newbie mistake! Will I have any issues on exporting it to a good quality after I'm done with the project?
@postpros-e
@postpros-e 2 года назад
Hey, thanks for the feedback. Mind you, generating proxies will give you MORE data, not LESS. Those are generated *_in addition to_* the original/optimized media. So using them won't solve that issue. Whereby I highly recommend NOT editing off your internal. Rather get any *_external_* disk for projects and media. Even very fast SSDs are fairly affordable now. And if you want to avoid unexpected growth of your library you might want to turn *_off_* the background rendering. Deleting the existing render files will also generally free up a large amount of space. Depending on your machine you probably don't need *_any_* the above. No optimized or proxy media or rendering prior to exporting. Also, if you DO use proxies for editing then FCP will tell you to switch back to the originals before exporting for maximum quality, yes.

Brilliant explanation, high quality production. One small question. How do I create a library on external storage that contains just the proxy and ‘nonproxyable’ files (wav,png..)? I have my library on a ride, for playback reasons it contains original and proxy and I want to edit ‘offline’ on a laptop just using proxy. Thank you for your help.

Thank you for the kind words. Glad you liked it! Is selecting the project and then selecting "File > Copy project to library > New library" not working for you?
@eugenoprina
@eugenoprina Год назад
@@postpros-e The thing is that I don’t have a project yet. We are still in production. In library there are video clips, audio clips and synchronized takes. It’s a feature film. I have found the solution to copy library to a new location and select just the proxy. Hopefully it will copy the waves too. Thank you for your answer 🙏

Really great video. New subscriber... I have a macbook air.. that has a small SSD hard drive, and the inability to view high resolution HEVC files. So I really need to start using proxies. Just started with finalcut.. been using imovie. My workaround at the moment has been to only shoot in 1080. Has the benefit of smaller file sizes and I can view them. I'm thinking with finalcut proxies though and your workflow, I can maybe make this work. The plan for now is to import the files making proxies, and leaving the video files in place. I will do this all on an external SSD drive. Then i'm hoping to consolidate the proxy files to the library or to my macs SSD drive, and then move the the library also to the mac's SSD drive leaving the original large files on the external drive? Would that work okay? I tend to work on the fly.. always adding media, screen shots, etc.,during the editing process, and typically I just drag media to the media libary or to the timeline.. as I really don't need backup copies of them and don't want to reimport. Does this sound about right.

Hey! Thanks for the feedback! I'm actually very surprised that an M1 Air (at least I'm _assuming_ you're talking about an M1 not Intel, right?) should have any difficulties whatsoever editing UHD material, HEVC or otherwise. Because I've even edited *_12K RAW_* on one! So if you're having issues, it'll be your disk I/O or some other component, not the machine. Of course, if it's an Intel… okay. No surprise there. 😉 Either way, your planned workflow sounds fine. Of course, if you copy media to the library upon import you're creating at least one level of redundancy, which I generally recommend as a minimum. FCP already makes automatic backups of your library (sans the media) so you really only need to secure the media in case of a meltdown. And I would *_always_* recommend working from an external drive. A fast one, obviously.

@@postpros-e Thanks so much for the reply.. Yeah.. It's an Intel chip.. so I have issues. My workflow sort of worked as expected. I got a new Samsung 1TB SSD drive. I pretty much worked off it the entire time.. without issue. I created proxy's for the 5K media and the ultra slowmo that my mac coudn't deal with. The creation of the proxy's took more time than expected.. and it copied the proxy's directly into the library that was on my hard drive as opposed to the external drive where they origninals resided which was unexpected. Still playing around though to figure out my workflow. Thanks again for giving me some ideas !!

@@GoldenK9Campers Yeah, on that machine the transcodes won't exactly be quick, no. Though *_ProRes_* proxies should be "ok". And if you want the proxies elsewhere, be it before OR after the fact, you simply need to *_change your library's storage location settings_* accordingly.

@@GoldenK9Campers Yeah, H.264 for proxies on that machine is not a good idea. Unless you don't mind waiting overnight. Of course, to be fair, the ProRes files will be *_considerably_* larger, so it's always a give and take. 🤷🏼‍♂ BTW, on an M1 on the other hand the transcoding speeds between ProRes, H.264 and even HEVC is a wash. It's amazing.

It's definitely better than it used to be but there's an insane performance penalty when you have both originals/optimized and proxy files present and big libraries (say, 5 000 clips or more). Unless everything is on solid state storage, which is simply not always possible (easily 10-20TB projects), the HDD or HDD RAIDs grind endlessly on every edit. From what I see in the filesystem monitor; FCPX checks everything over and over again for some reason. It's not a project, hardware or settings issue AFAIK, and I'm not alone in this. I'm real world large projects, proxy workflows are still very problematic.

Sorry to hear. I can't confirm, unfortunately. Have had the described scenario a few times and never seen that. I can only assume it's an I/O or even plugin issue. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Hope you figure it out!

My final cut doesn't create seperate project libraries for the proxies for some reason. How can I fix that?
@postpros-e
@postpros-e Год назад
I don't know what you mean by "seperate project libraries". FC doesn't create a new library. You are either saving your generated files inside the library or in an _external _*_folder_*
@GoldenK9Campers

I am so confused. I did my first full Final Cut Pro Project with some proxies. The 4K footage I created proxies for, and the 1080P footage I did not. I imported all of that footage using the import method.. and leave files in place method thru the import window. The proxies took forever to create (h.264) and as you previously suggested, next time i'll try prores. A couple of things I didn't expect.. It created the proxies inside of the library.. I kind of assumed it would put them on the hard drive somewhere? The other thing that was weird.. is when I manually imported files into the library or the timeline.. I.e, just draggd and dropped them.. it used the keep files in place method as opposed to putting them in the media library. I guess when you drag files into the library or the timeline it uses the import settings that you last selected? Is that right. Also.. in finalcut pro it seems much harder than Imovie to add transitions.. I always get errors about the media clip not having enough space, and something about a ripple affect.. I'm using the Ctrl-T method for putting in the transitions. Had that happen less if I dragged the transition as opposed to Ctrl-T.. Imovie seemed much easier in this regards.
@postpros-e
@postpros-e 2 года назад
Again… where FC puts any and all generated files is determined by *_the library's media location settings_* … if you don't change anything, then things such as proxy files will end up in the library i.e. wherever it was saved, yes. What settings are used for any import outside of the import window iteself is determined by the *_import preferences_* which will generally be whatever you last used in the import window, yes. You can easily check what those are *_in FC's preferences_* . And even iMovie *_needs media on both sides_* to create a transition, yes. Obviously. Whether it tells you that or not and instead just shortens your media as needed I don't know.

@@postpros-e Hi !! Would the following work ? I create a library on my macBook pro Import media but keep it external Once imported, change library's media location settings to "inside library" Create proxies Unmount ExtHDD Edit Once done, delete proxies and link to original Thank you very much :)

I think I just made a mistake. After creating the proxies I only need to consolidate
@postpros-e
@postpros-e Год назад
@@daviddelayat-dnapictures Hey! Thanks for watching. That would work just fine. But there's no compelling reason to immediately DELETE the proxies. You _could_ of course, but even if you don't, FC will *automatically* relink to the originals once they, i.e. the disk that they came from, are/is present. Whether you delete the proxies or not. As soon as you switch to "Optimized/Original" and nothing goes offline, then you know that's what you're looking at AND using for export. 😉

Hi, I created proxies in prores 25%. My originals (4TB) are on an external HDD. My project library is on the internal 1TB MBP SSD. The problem I run into is when I quit FCP, unmount the eternal drive containing my originals, then open FCP again without reconnecting the external drive, all of my files within the browser say they are missing proxies. I then either have to relink proxies or shut down FCP, reconnect the external drive, and reopen FCP. Any ideas on a solution to this issue?
@postpros-e
@postpros-e 2 года назад
Hey! Did you in fact create the proxies *_in the library_* or are they on the external HD as well? What does the info window say where things are, size etc.? If they are in the library then they should of course not go offline from what you describe. Hard if not impossible to diagnose from afar.

@postpros-e
@postpros-e Год назад
@@davidlstevens Then you'll have to use Compressor. I'm not aware of doing that with FC alone. But de-squeezing the proxies but not the originals doesn't really make any sense. De-squeeze the originals, import them and create proxies. Done.
@davidlstevens
@davidlstevens Год назад
@@postpros-e are you suggesting that there is a setting in Compressor that would allow you to Desqueeze originals without transcoding?
@postpros-e
@postpros-e Год назад
@@davidlstevens You didn't say anything about no transcoding. Though transcoding to e.g. ProRes is effectively lossless. I don't know of any way to just "squeeze and save" with a video passthrough. Whereby I don't even understand the need for *_prior_* transcoding or de-squeezing to begin with. I don't know what advantage that poses. You simply import your footage as always and scale it on the Y-axis as needed. Or use an adjustment layer. If you need proxies then create those as always as well.
