Best reviewer on RU-vid imo. I find myself shaking my head to every movie I have seen that you have also seen, same taste. Your love for movies is evident, yet you also continually shift focus to the war and the things that really matter in your description. Magnolia has been on my list forever but haven’t seen it yet, thank you for giving me the extra push! Not parasocial, just appreciate you vids a lot so thank you!

As an Indian who has grown up with all sorts of Indian cinema (Bollywood is but one of the many film industries here), I am absolutely befuddled by the critical success of RRR. I absolutely loathed the film and it is one of the few films that made me want to walk out of the cinema midway. Non-Indians, please explain your love for this to me, it is baffling

totally agree with your thoughts on Crawdads! Also agree that Evans was the best part of The Gray Man. I actually liked the movie better than the book for that one. I had more fun watching it than I did reading the book but the movie is still nothing special. (especially considering the budget!)

I felt similarly about "The Gray Man", and I don't normally mind trope-y assassin movies bc it's harder to avoid clichés in that genre at this point considering how many there have been, so I'm more forgiving. But "The Gray Man" was too lazy for my liking. I'm curious if you've seen "Kate" with Mary Elizabeth Winstead? It's also derivative but it's still well done. I actually enjoyed it despite it not being very well received by critics or audiences.

"Close encounters of the third kind" is a solid Spielberg movie, maybe the sci-fi Spielberg film I'd recommend the least because it's slow, long and don't fit everyone's cup of tea in the genre, even among the Spielberg sci-fi catalogue. But ithe remastered edition on blu-ray looks great, Richard D. is awesome, Williams score is a classic. It's for people who love slow paced sci-fi movies. It must have looked great on the big screen, not that I'd know I was just a baby 😁. "Magnolia" the best PTA movie. I've seen it a few times, never bought it cause it's so depressing, I cried every time and I've not re-watched it since Phillip Seymour Hoffman died which probably will make me cry even more 😭 (still not recovered). It's one of the best dramatic Tom Cruise performances. I liked "The gray man" for a one-time silly fun time. The budget isn't justified, guess a lot went into Gosling and Evans's bank accounts 😂

Fascinating. I thought the Russian sequence was fine. I thought the sequence with Eleven and the underground lab treatments was the "snoozer" part of the season. And that's my opinion. Sorry......
@gerrit2822
@gerrit2822 2 года назад
I wouldn't call Vecna a bad villain, but, while being fascinating at times, he remains that simple guy who just wants to rule the world for some dumb reason. At that runtime, they could've done better than that. As entertaining as this season was, it never does more than plainly that. It wants to be deep, but never gets there with it's charming, still undeveloped characters.

I fully agree about The Gray Men. The writing in this movie is awful, and what's even worse the tempo is poor and the entire film is just boring. And being boring is inexcusable for a stupid action movie... I even think your star rating might be too high. Or maybe I'm overly critical, cause I was too hyped for seeing Ryan Gosling - Ana de Armas duo once more time and my expectations were unrealistic?

I was thrilled with your comments about Magnolia! It was my favorite film, from the moment of its release, until my senses beheld the glory that was Mad Max: Fury Road. Regardless of how one feels about the film, at the very least, it offers a master class of exceptional acting. A long time ago, I had dreams of being a screenwriter, and this screenplay (there is a book that was released in 1999 with the script) is the type of story I would have wrote; a film that emanates emotion and feelings taken to the highest levels. You were spot on in your observation that the film is all about empathy (embodied in the figure of John C. Reilly.) Highest compliment I can pay your review is that I want to watch it again. Thanks.

I suspect that the targeted demographic bracket is above me and maybe it's because the number of romance-anchored films that I've watched is less than the number of digits on one hand, but I nonetheless found _Where the Crawdads Sing_ to be a pleasing picture. All the major and secondary characters are portrayed well, but Edgar-Jones and Strathairn are standouts in a very competitive field. Kya's later mindset is phenomenal. 👌

For me, Stranger Things were very good until the last hour of the series; Vecna was killed - apparently, they say he's not dead - and he should have had a complete victory to show how desperate the situation is for the gang AND Max should have died to show that there are deadly consequences for people that are continually in dangerous situations. 💀💀 I probably won't bother to watch the last season of the show, it's simply too predictable.

I mostly agree with your opinion on Stranger Things 4 but I did find there was some clunky exposition dialog that could have been better handled. If you like Song Kang-Ho, you should check out the vampire movie Thirst directed by Park Chan-Wook, one of my favorite South Korean directors. Park also directed Oldboy and the Vengeance trilogy. Thanks Marianna, I agree with you about Close Encounters. I did indeed see it on a very big screen the night it opened. And what's even better I didn't know anything about it. So yeah, the ending was pretty mind blowing. But upon rewatching it a few years back I felt '70's-ness' of the dialogue. But it was good to see François Truffaut in an American film. Also I watched the first season of Stranger Things a few years, never watched seasons 2 & 3 because of the iffy reviews. But then people were acting much differently about this season.... so I ploughed my way through it to get to season four. I'm so glad I did. My feeling was that by season three they were mining the worst vein of 80's nostalgia. Having lived very consciously through that decade, I must say at the time, after the seriousness of the 60s, and the insanity of the 70s (Oh! But that's when I fist connected with cinema!) the 80s seemed like a cheesy dumpster fire by comparison. And surface level 80s just seemed superficial. (But interestingly in America Kate Bush was more underground culture to us.) And underground culture was what was fascinating. (Nick Cave was underground culture then. But also so many different music movements. Oh yes, most important! Tarkovsky was deeply buried then. But I was there for the first run showings of Stalker, Nostalghia, & The Sacrifice.) But it is curious how long we have ridden the 80's nostalgia train. And I can only compare it to way 60s, 70s and 80s people romanticized the 1950s. And I think that one of the strengths of season 4 was that they didn't play the silly 80's nostalgia game the same way. Bullet Train coming up soon. Can't wait for your take.

I dont think the problem with crawdads is that it was a romance. I wouldnt say it is even a romance. It is a bunch of things: a biology textbook, a courtroom drama, a murder mystery, a little bit of to kill a mocking bird. I like a good romance, but I found the romance in this movie to be very shallow. A lot of it wasnt even very romantic in my view. The book was well written in its descriptions of nature, but the plot was unbelievable and there was very little character development, which is something you usually see with romances.

One of your liveliest videos in awhile, I was totally engaged the whole time. You have a great sense of humor and some hilarious expressions when you seem more relaxed. I mean your videos are always great, but sometimes they just *pop* if you know what I mean. I feel like you’re in the living room and we’re just chatting about films over a glass of wine and chuckling about the absurdity of it all. Maybe it’s just me, lol. I love that you watched The Host again, I think I need to rewatch that now. Definitely a unique “creature feature” and the social commentary is still totally relevant. Also the Crawdads need to pipe down and go to sleep because that book/movie really sucks. It’s just tropes woven together for (I feel) a gaggle of middle aged women who read the same schlock-as-literature every month in their book clubs in the time honored tradition of 50 Shades or Twilight. It’s worse than 6/10, you’re too nice. Lastly, we need to talk Stranger Things 4. It kicked so much ass! It did get off to a shaky start I thought with some of the plot lines - I think the town of Kyrzran might be fictional? But yeah the Камча́тская о́бласть gulag stuff was cringe; the California stuff was equally cliché and unnecessary (as was the road trip to Utah 😴 of all places), but thankfully the show didn’t linger there too long and got back to the shizz going down in Hawkins pretty often. I dunno, they had the budget and runtime to explore separating everyone and scattering them to different locations but I don’t feel like all that effort really paid off. The danger was in Hawkins, the interesting stuff happened in Hawkins, Hawkins Hawkins Hawkins. Vecna was a great villain and Jamie Bower did such a great job portraying him, especially as Henry/001 when he was creepy but _amazingly charming_ during his time supervising the kids (in Eleven’s recovered memory). They really nailed the casting there, as well as Joe Quinn as Eddie (nuff said). The continuing development of Max, Robin, Steve, Nancy, Lucas et al was so necessary too, although it felt like Mike, Will (except for his identity crisis), and especially Jonathan were almost ignored. I’m assuming Will is going to have a major role in Season 5, but sticking Jonathan with Argyle and making them stoners was just kind of a lazy way of not dealing with the Jonathan-Nancy-Steve thing for a whole season. Argyle was fun, but it was a case of “too many genres in one series” I think on the whole. THAT SAID, the way the Duffers did manage to pull everything together in the final few episodes and really deliver a big, satisfying (and sad) climax was amazing to watch and you’re right, it did restore my faith after frankly a pretty dull Season 3. It wasn’t as tightly plotted and novel as Season 1 (still my favorite) but then how could it be? They went big and while there were some misses and distractions, the hits really hit hard and the core Vecna, Brenner, Eleven story remained compelling. Did I mention how much I liked Robin, Max, Eddie 🎸, and Henry/001/Vecna? Thanks for the fantastic video and for reading my long ass comment. Have a great week! 💙💛

I watched X a few days ago and I don't know why I took so long to do it. I can't wait for Pearl. Stranger Things... Yes, very upset. I still think about it and watch every reel on insta just to keep crying; so unfair. I wasn't expecting anything from this season and it not only was great but it also hit me in the feels SO hard. Dammit.

I really loved Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I have seen it many times. I watched it in the theater when I was in high school. I was also bored with The Gray Man. Empty spectacle.

Great recs! And having read the book Where The Crawdads Sing, kinda loved the movie. One of those...gives justice to the book type film! Honestly, only watched it for Daisy Edgar-Jones. She was so amazing in Fresh earlier this year & the show Under the Banner of Heaven too was good. In short, will watch anything Daisy is in as she is proving to be a good actor! Wonder if you'd ever watch Normal People?

I think the idea of a guy living in the Upside Down is the right step in the evolution of ‘Stranger Things’ and a concept I thought of years ago.

Nah, Us is by far Peele’s weakest film thus far. While well made, well shot, well acted, has an amazing concept, and has a lot of great tension and symbolism, the film is abundant with hit or miss jokes, has the weakest character and story development, and there’s plot holes galore that are impossible to ignore once you start asking questions. Found a lot more to love about Nope personally (as I stated in a comment on your review), though I’ll still admit Get Out remains Peele’s best film.

I watched 9 movies for the first time in July: Thor Love and Thunder (I ended up loving this movie. Can't wait to own it) Nightmare on Elm Street (I don't like much classic horror such as Halloween and Scream, so I was surprised that I ended up enjoying this) First Blood (Rambo) (I was similarly surprised to enjoy this considering this kind of movie doesn't usually work for me) 3:10 to Yuma (2007) Pleasantville I know what you did last summer Death on the Nile (2022) (I re- watched Knives Out which got me in mood for another murder mystery, so I check this out and it was okay. Not bad, but not memorable) Heat (I enjoyed it, but it didn't need to be borderline 3 hours.) The Godfather (this movie was juat not for me. It felt way longer than it is and like 3 hours of betrayal and murder to the point I became numb to it. )
