@@ImpressionBlend Difficult to pull off since it relies a lot on phenomena that are literally unimaginable (and thus hard to do visually), as well as a lot of verbose explanations of the significance of some eldritch item or the way a character (failing to process what is happening) descends into incoherent madness. That said it HAS been done well many times. Maybe not direct Cthulhu or Lovecraft adaptations but stuff from Carpenter (Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness), King, et al. The Mist (film) was a good example of ‘localized’ cosmic horror, and even Stranger Things’ Upside Down borrows heavily from the cosmic horror genre. I think the secret lies in developing compelling characters and creating the right sort of atmosphere (especially the musical score), and NOT in trying to show the “monsters” very much if at all. Sure, that will frustrate a lot of fans, especially the creature-feature type, but it’s the only way to really build the existential dread necessary to make it work. Any actual gods/monsters that moviemakers can imagine is almost by definition not shocking enough. Films like The Thing and In The Mouth of Madness get around the problem by focusing on the *insanity* part and not necessarily the incomprehensible beings that exist behind the curtain. In books it’s much easier because a skilled writer can hint at things without actually describing them in detail - the human mind is quite capable of filling in the rest!

An Asylum horror I would recommend is Session 9 (2001) because it is super atmospheric and takes place in huge abandoned asylum. There are some truly creepy , panic inducing moments in this film. I would consider this one a hidden gem. A cannibal horror film I thought was pretty intense was Ravenous (1999) starring Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, and David Arquette. It's set in the 19th century American frontier and is about a remote military outpost that encounters a vicious and cunning stranger who turns out to be a cannibal. The ensuing fight for survival is brutal as the killer stalks and kills the men in the surrounding wilderness.

My OCD is upset you didn’t have 2 more sub genres. If I can offer one you don’t have listed, Animal Horror. Ghost and the Darkness, Burning Bright, Cujo, Backcountry, Piranha, Open Water, Arachnophobia, Crawl, the Grey. I wouldn’t classify these as creature movies. Nature is a far more frightening foe than Godzilla. Probably a lesser sub genre I’d have on my list would be Western Horror....Bone Tomahawk, Burrowers, Ravenous. All that said, love your take on all of this, and now I’m off to watch House at the End of Time, thanks for the rec.

@@ImpressionBlend And Hey! Cannibals! Just sayin'. I have a subgenre that includes Texas Chainsaw, some zombie films, Near Dark, Taxi Driver and much more. American Gothic Films... not to be confused with Gothic. To Kill A Mockingbird is also an American Gothic film, likewise The Road, Unforgiven, and Night of the Hunter. It's the dark vision of the American dream in decay. If they ever make Blood Meridian it will be right up there near the top of the list. Thanks Marianna great idea. I could list ten more subgenres. But hey I don't have anything to prove...

Here are my descriptions for each of these sub-genres. Slasher: A masked mute person kills a group of dumb people one by one until they are defeated by the survivor. Found Footage: The protagonist captures footage of spooks with various different types of videos. Crime: A detective tries to catch a killer before they kill more people. Home Invasion: A masked mute person breaks into someone's house and tries to kill the owners. Survival: The victim tries to make it through a perilous situation. Body Horror: Someone gets extremely screwed up by transformation. Torture and Gore: Someone gets put through a huge amount of visceral pain. Psychological: Someone gets put through a mental ordeal. Asylum: A mental hospital is involved in the plot in some form. Cannibal: Someone eats someone else. Revenge: The protagonist goes on a murderous rampage to avenge something they went through. Comedy: There is some sort of humor to lighten up the spooks. Haunted House: A family has to deal with ghosts that have disrupted their move into a new home. Gothic: The mood of the story is very dramatic and elegant. Supernatural: Someone is haunted by things that can't be explained by science. Folk and Mythology: Someone is menaced by cultural monsters. Outbreak and Zombies: The world is affected by a deadly virus. Vampires: There is a monster that looks like a human that charms people into giving up their blood. Werewolves: A person turns into a monstrous wolf. Creature Feature: A giant monster is involved in the plot. Sci-Fi: There is some sort of otherworldly or futuristic presence in the plot. Possession: Someone loses control of their body to something. Superpowers: The protagonist has unnatural abilities.

Sorry for the double comment, but this one is for AFTER I've watched! I love this topic! Just seeing what this video was about earlier filled me with excitement, because one thing the Horror genre has in spades is sub-genres!! This video at 34:18 long still cannot cover them all - but these were excellent category breakdowns. For most of them, I found myself picking the same tiers you went with. I feel like most people will fall that way, because what fills "Over It" is going to be the over saturation of the sub-genre. "Outbreak & Zombies" is a perfect example as there's just too many. I feel if I were to make a Tier list with this category, I might either rename a tier or make a new tier called "Take a Step Back" for sub-genres that need to go away for a bit, so that they can come back in a big bad way later. One sub-genre that I would've split out from another, like you did "Asylum" from "Psychological" is I would've separated "Cult" from "Folk & Mythology". For the purposes of time and how similar in theme they are, I see why those were combined, but I do feel "Cult" is a more specific flavor and there can be "Cult Horror" that isn't "Folk Horror". Like "Rosemary's Baby" I would label a Cult Horror, but not a Folk Horror. Another sub-genre I would want to separate (just so I could put it in “Dying For More”) is “American Gothic". I feel "Gothic" and "American Gothic" have very unique flavors so separating them would make sense. "Gothic" I think more lush, foliage growing around intricately designed architecture. "American Gothic" is desolate and rural, run down - on a dried up farmland or a decaying bayou. Not the best examples, but "Gothic" I'd liken to "Flowers in the Attic" and "American Gothic" to several of the "Texas Chainsaw" films - particularly the opening halves. The sub-genre I was surprised wasn't on this list was "Historical/Period Horror". Films like The VVitch are instead grouped into other categories, but I feel this would warrant a classification of its own. A sub-genre however that I would add only to stick it into "Over It" is "Family Horror". I have noticed more horror films coming out where the fear of family is the central scare factor. Be it a family falling apart or the greatest threat is a family member, this is a sub-genre that just rarely seems to connect with me. This is highly subjective and I know that one reason for my lack of connection to these films is because I don't really have that element in my life. Or rather, my family is a very strong positive force in my life that it is hard for me to feel the horror when everything is unraveling. There definitely is no shortage of sub-genres in horror, so again I think this video was great picking which ones you did. This could very well have been a two hour video. I also thank you for some movies I should move up on my queue list to watch sooner rather than later! ^_^

Ooh! Have you ever considered doing a video where you compare horror franchises' first films to their latest entries? I feel like it'd be cool to look at what tropes/aspects they really leaned into with the later films, and what iconic parts aren't even in the originals (ex: Jason and the hockey mask in Friday the 13th, since neither of them were in the first). Did they change for better or worse? Are they even recognizable as sequels/remakes to the first?

Great video! My clear number one is space horror. Doesn't matter if it's good or bad, I will most likely enjoy it. Event Horizon (my favourite), four Alien movies, Pandorum, Life, Pitch Black, Supernova, Ghosts of Mars or even such a garbage film like Jason X (aka Friday the 13th in space) - I like them all. As for the tier list suggestions, I would love to see your rating of all episodes of the Masters of Horror series (something similar to your Black Mirror tier list). However, I'm afraid it will be too niche for RU-vid.

I really enjoyed this video, but how can you talk about comedy horror and not mention Shaun of the Dead? No mentions of An American Werewolf in London or The Howling? I get that a lot of werewolf flicks can have cheesy ‘man in suit’ vibes but these two are considered some of the best werewolf flicks ever made with top notch special effects! Also no mention of Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive which could either fit in the comedy or zombie sub genre. On a final note, there is a subgenre that you failed to mention completely, that being the giallo. It’s understandable why you didn’t include that subgenre as it basically died out decades ago, but it’s still worth a mention! Thanks again for the vid!

Fascinating tier list! "Anthology" could have been another category. I tend to agree with your top tier, but I actually love every sub-genre of horror except for "Torture & Gore". I basically tolerate the "Torture/Porn" subgenre, but exceptions are Terrifier, Inside, Hellraiser & The Reanimator, which I thoroughly enjoy. I never considered "Martyrs" to be torture/porn, but more psychological home-invasion/revenge horror. I'd definitely love to see more "Superpowers" horror; so many missed opportunities (like with "The New Mutants")! However, I loved "Doctor Sleep", it's one of my all-time favorite movies!

I enjoyed your Horror sub-genre tier list and my favourite genre is Comedy Horror. When I was a child back in the 60's I remember the very first horror movie I watched was House of Wax (1953) with Vincent Price and with my favourite actor back in the '80s, Charles Bronson (his first). A few Aussie ones that I can think of that I really enjoyed are Wolf Creek, The Babadook, 100 Bloody Acres, Little Monsters, Dead Calm, The Snowtown Murders and Relic. I remember sneaking into the theatres to see The Exorcist (1973) (you had to be over 18 and it scared the shit out of me) and the famous Jaws (1975) which stopped me from going into the water. What about Evil Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Friday the 13th, Halloween, An American Werewolf in London, The Shining, Black Sheep, Hostel and any horror movies that were done by Alfred Hitchock. Who could ever forget, I Spit on Your Grave, Basket Case, Bloodsucking Freaks, Brain Damage and finally, The Toxic Avenger. LOL

The strangers is probably my fav home invasion horror movie. I remember seeing it in the theater when it came out. The scene that always gets me I when Liv Tyler is in the kitchen and the male killer is just standing behind her in the the background but you may not even know he's there if you aren't looking for him. It was just a chilling moment to realize that all the stuff the 3 killers do after that was all just to terrorize the couple because they already were able to get in and out of the house since the beginning. Just thinking about being in that situation is a horror in itself for me personally lol. I sometimes have an irrational fear of opening my blinds and there being someone just looking in staring at me at 3am in the morning lol.

Late in the game on this video, but oh well. I'm wondering in what category you would put 'The Blob' from 1988? Is it a creature feature or sci fi? If you haven't already: Red, White and Blue (from 2010, not the one from 2023) is in my opinion an underrated revenge horror movie. Also not the biggest werewolf fan, but recently watched Dog Soldiers and was really entertained! Razorback is also a great watch, the cinematography knocks it out of the park. Should be as big as Jaws if you ask me. There are some giallo gems. In my opinion, old and gritty will be the better

7:32 for home invasion recommendations, I'd highly recommend Michael Haneke's "Funny Games". It's really good and worth a watch. The 90's original, not the early 2000's remake. It's very off putting because the home invaders are not scary people on the outside. They look like well-off people, the last people you'd expect to pull off a home invasion. It's really intense and very well made, and I'd highly recommend it to you!

Is “Gerald's Game” considered “Survival Horror” and what did you think of it? For “Supernatural horror” what did you think of “Empty man?” also thanks for the new recommendations!

20:44 Yes, I enjoyed 'The Woman In Black' for its excellent dark, brooding atmosphere and any horror movies that take place during an historical era (like the Victorian era) really resonate with me.

Extremely cool video. I'd have to divide slasher films into two subcategories because supernatural slashers are some of my favorite movies but I find myself bored or depressed very often by non-supernatural slasher films because they're too much like the kind of thing you can see just by watching the news. In general, I prefer fantasy and sci-fi and supernatural to horror that is more realistic. You might be the first person I've ever encountered who doesn't think that the practical effects in An American Werewolf in London and The Howling are amazing and still hold up very well today. We can agree that Ginger Snaps is awesome though. This discussion has gotten me interested in horror movies featuring superpowers and from what I've heard Freaks (2018) might be really good but I have yet to watch it. The current season of Stranger Things seems to be all about this sub-genre, of course. My Horror Sub-Genres Tier List: Dying for More -- Supernatural (including slashers), Possession, Haunted House, Folk & Mythology, Vampires, Werewolves Worth Another Stab -- Sci-Fi, Comedy, Body Horror, Psychological, Gothic, Creature Feature, Superpowers Better Get Creative -- Outbreak & Zombies, Crime (Thriller/Horror), Slasher (non-supernatural) Over It -- Revenge, Survival, Found Footage, Asylum, Cannibal An Actual Nightmare -- Home Invasion, Torture & Gore

I still like both comedy horror and creature feature movies, but especially with the former you‘re right that it‘s very hard to find good movies. One that falls into both categories and is a favorite of mine is Lake Placid. I was so happy when I discovered it back in the day and I haven‘t found a single person that I‘ve watched it with who didn‘t like it.

Hi Marianna - I'm pretty sure you would be on board with this. Thrillers - Let The Right One In & And A Quiet Place. Sorry, I just realized you mentioned them. But I can't help mentioning them again. Please forgive me. But they are the best of the best. PS - if you haven't read the book Let The Right One In, it's a must read.

When it comes to Found Footage horror, it really depends on the venue you watch it. I feel it works best when you actually find some creepy film on the weird part of RU-vid. But for theater releases, I really was freaked out by "Amber Alert" and "Megan is Missing." +1 for Folk/Mythology, especially when it carries the trope of a cult or organization in which the villains are so powerful and overreaching, you can't run or hide from them. It's really scary when the character's family members are in on it. Really good ones I found were "Resolution" and "The Endless." Analog Horror is a new subgenre, and I think "Skinamarink" was the only one to make it to the big screen so far. Sure, the movie was WAY too long for its content, lots of people hated it, but this genre takes childhood imagery and totally corrupts it. My suspicion is it will just become a fad and seem dated. But I don't know, SO much can be done with it. Sci-Fi horror is a mixed bag for me. If it is too techno/military, I just don't feel the fear because the characters have training and equipment to better deal with the situation, even if bullets won't hurt the bad guy, I suspect the crew will find a way. "Alien" were a bunch of alcoholic space truckers with lousy flamethrowers, and that amplified a terrible situation, while I viewed "Aliens" to be more of an Action/Adventure film. I find horror is done best when the protagonist is an average person. It's even scarier when the protagonist is a BELOW average person. I really get a sense that the main character might not make it.

There's actually a 2021 remake of The Cube that I watched on Prime just the other day. It's more of a Japanese remake and I was honestly very underwhelmed being a big fan of the original. It's basically the same exact movie but with Japanese actors.

The scariest horror films are the B&W Japanese films for the domestic market that I saw in Japan during the 60s. I've been looking for them without luck. It doesn't help that I don't remember the titles, but the music and the visuals chill you like no Hollywood horror film. " Onibaba" is similar but doesn't even come close.

Wow, what a great video, I hadn't thought about it, but it seems there's more horror subgenres, than I could name 'regular' genres! Also agree with about 90% of it, especially about 'torture porn' movies - they seem to be made for mentally sick people, that should be on community watch lists, like rapists! I do like comedy horror though, and action/home invasion films, like You're Next and original Purge.

I am with you on most of your tier-rankings. My favorite horror subgenre is psychological, and the subgenre I loathe is torture porn. I dislike all the same subgenres as you, and I loved your favorites, too, except maybe superpowered, which is more of a "worth a watch" for me. But yes to gothic horror, crime horror, folk horror, sci-fi horror and revenge horror. This was such a fun video. Thank you for this!

If you love Lake Mungo then you'd probably love another movie in the After Dark horror movie sets that's called The Gravedancers with Dominic Purcell and Clare Kramer and to me a good comedy horror movie is the lesser known Feast with Henry Rollins, Eric Dane, Krista Allen, and Balthazar Getty

Sci-Fi/Horror will always be my favorite subgenre just because of the Alien series, Invasion of the Body Snatchers films, Mimic, The Relic etc. Slashers are my second favourites and I also adore Creature Feature films but I view this subgenre as something wider - not just giant monsters. Any animal attack films are interesting to me

If you're looking for a solid little Gothic Horror, Mario Bava's "Kill, Baby....Kill!" (Awful name, I know), is one of my favorites. It released in 1966 and inspired a LOT of other movies (if you ever wondered why every ghost child has a red ball, here ya go), though it's been all but forgotten over the years (mostly because it's been very hard to find).
