Here in Spain theatres are actually open so this year my list of favorites is full of Spanish features. But there's one that I highly encourage you to see. It's called Akelarre and it's quite similar to The Witch by Robert Eggers. Put it on your radar.

Marianna you had me at The Vast of Night, which slipped by me. And Corpus Christi looks pretty stunning. Devs, indeed. If you do anymore series bests then I'm sure Dark is going to rank high for you. Well here's to 2021 and some serious surprises. Wait!!! No Wonder Woman 1984! And I think this is the longest I've ever seen your hair. Not that I'm complaining.

Marianna, you are so dependable when it comes to recommending films and books that are good and in my own taste. You are so on point as well: since day one your aesthetics are mezmorizing. And the way you speak and write is so engaging and clever. Thank you for creating such incredible content that is so well thought out. I have been out of the loop for so long, and I miss you and I miss watching great movies/books. You've never let me down. After Dostoevski, Tarkovsky, Tolstoy, Solzhenitsyn, Maya Plisetskaya, Nabokov, and vodka, you are in that line of why I possess such a Russian sentiment. I'm serious I am i love with your work and I think your amazing. Cheers.

Been looking forward to this! You have inspired me to rent “Another Round.” I haven’t seen as many films this year as I’d like to (Have yet to see Nomadland, Minari, The Father, Promising Young Woman), but the best film I saw would have to be “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” I loved that it was (mostly) all one location, Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman were incredible, and it felt like the most successfully executed picture I saw.

Awesome list Marianna! 👏🏼 There’s so many 2020 films I’ve yet to see (especially difficult when things get released so much later here in Australia 😝 - for example, ‘The Rental’ only *just* became available here but I know it’s been out for about 6 months haha). There’s a couple on your list that I’ve put on my watch list. Especially excited for The Sound of Metal and Corpus Christi. Also, I LOVED Promising Young Woman. Checked it out twice in the theatres, it’s just so great (and that ending!). Thanks for sharing your list. Great video, as usual! 🖤

Great video & list! I still have to watch Nomadland, Vast of Night and Sound of Metal but you just made me excited about Corpus Christi, which I wasn't necessarily going to watch in the first place. Speaking of 1st place, we share that one in common! 1. Another Round (immediately knew it was my number one after that finale!) 2. I'm thinking of ending things (Tried to make some friends watch it with me again. They fell asleep in that first 20min scene ^^) 3. Mank 4. Sputnik (which I totally only saw because you reviewed it on this channel. I would never have even heard of it if it wasn't for you. So thank you for that!) 5. Tigertail (reminded me of that "Parents" episode from Master of None S01EO2) 6. Weathering With You ( from Makoto Shinkai, the guy who did "Your Name", which Letterboxd tells me you haven't seen yet either!) 7. The Invisible Man (Never thought this movie would have made my list when I first heard of it ^^) 8. Tenet (Very dry, but crunchy ^^) 9. His House (told you about already) 10. Time to Hunt (A much better movie than I was expecting when I heard it was a Korean Heist movie, highly recommanded) Promising Young Woman just fell short of my top 10, landing at number 11. And lower down my list I also have Palm Springs and The Trial of the Chicago 7. One other movie I would recommend to you Marianna, since you like time loops as much as I do, is "Koko-di Koko-da"! Looking forward to your upcoming videos!

As for 2020 releases we still need to see, they are: Another Round I Care a Lot. Nomadland I feel really blurs the line between good drama and a "do whatever and we'll film it" production. I found it hard to become emotionally invested. I kept having visions of Chloe telling Frances "Wait!!! You have to poop? Do it on the side of the road and we'll use it in the movie!!!!"

Here is my Top 10 of this year: Pieces of a Woman I'm Thinking of Ending Things Never Rarely Sometimes Always Shithouse Black Bear Sputnik Gretel & Hansel (even tho it had a bad reception by most people) 12 Hour Shift Relic Possessor I always go by the year Letterboxd categorizes the movie, because here in Austria movies sometimes take 1-2 years to get a wide release and it would be to complicated to categorize them this way.

Corpus Christi is based on a true story! Kill It and Leave This Town - it took 14 years to make that movie :) Eastern - it is from 2019 but such an underrated movie...

I had to watch 'I'm thinking of ending things' twice to really get everything. Good film!

That's why I said, I prioritize films I want to watch again for "favorites" lists. As much as I loved "Pieced of a Woman", I can't see myself ever rewatching it - so much of it is very tough to watch.

The Vast of Night makes such great use of a limited budget.

Yes! I wonder what the director can do with an actual budget, I bet it would be great

Mariana : please get down to watching the Small Axe films . If you’re okay with including Devs here : I’m 100% sure films from Steve McQueen in the Small Axe would’ve made your list

Good list, a lot of those would make my best of. It must be generational, but I had a hard time not being offended with the inclusion of TV in the list;-). I'm probably almost twice your age, but gave up on TV in the early '90s. Some of the ones that would make my list that you didn't mention would be The Nest (Carrie Coon deserved an acting nomination!), Swallow, 1st Cow, The Climb & Vivarium. The top of my list would be A White, White Day.

🌼 Can’t wait to watch Minari, Another Round, Nomadland, The Father, Devs, Promising Young Woman & I’m Thinking of Ending Things, and your video got me interested in Palm Springs and The Trial of the Chicago 7! 🤟🏼 Other films I’m yet to see include the Small Axe films, Kajillionaire, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Wolfwalkers, A Girl Missing, Waves, and Driveways. 😲 Not good at ranking or choosing a fixed number of favorites, because I feel my list would change every day, so here are the films I loved in 2020, released in 🇳🇱: 🌻 *Nasir* (Arun Karthick) 🌻 *Noura’s Dream* (Hinde Boujemaa) 🌻 *Bulbul Can Sing* (Rima Das) 🌻 *Un Fils* (Mehdi Barsaoui) 🌻 *Farewell Amor* (Ekwa Msangi) 🌻 *Adam* (Maryam Touzani) 🌻 *House of Hummingbird* (Bora Kim) 🌻 *Rocks* (Sarah Gavron) 🌻 *Matthias et Maxime* (Xavier Dolan) 🌻 *Beanpole* (Kantemir Balagov) 🌻 *System Crasher* (Nora Fingscheidt) 🌻 *La Belle Époque* (Nicolas Bedos) 🌻 *Gulabo Sitabo* (Shoojit Sircar) 🌻 *The Last Black Man in San Francisco* (Joe Talbot) 🌻 *A Hidden Life* (Terrence Malick) 🌻 *Queen & Slim* (Melina Matsoukas) 🌻 *Sound of Metal* (Darius Marder) 🌻 *The Vast of Night* (Andrew Patterson) 🌻 *Just Mercy* (Destin Daniel Cretton) 🌻 *Dark Waters* (Todd Haynes) 🌻 *Soul* (Pete Doctor & Kemp Powers) 🌻 *Jojo Rabbit* (Taika Waititi)

Another Round is a disappointing movie. It has interesting concept. But somehow its never really gets into the theme as deeply as it should. Also the screenplay is disjointing and the movie does not form a clear narrative. Yes the movie has some charm but its not the top movie of 2020. Its just not dramatic or emphatic enough.

I love your reviews, but I don't know what TIF is nor do I know what VOD is? I'm guessing one if is a film festival and the other a video streaming service for newer movies. Please advise. I love your recommendations and reviews.

you are very close :) TIFF = Toronto International Film Festival. VOD = Video on Demand (basically it means that all major vendors like iTunes, GooglePlay, AmazonPriveVideo etc give you the ability to rent and/or buy the movie)
