I too can’t imagine TAR without Cate Blanchett. Now I know why Todd wanted only her. It’s an undeniable performance worthy of every awards. After multiple viewing this movie hasn’t failed to intrigue me. Just to shows the level of details Todd has managed to pull off. Such a dense movie, he’s a master filmmaker IMO. Great video btw. Love your delivery!

For how long I've been waiting for this video, I honestly thought we would not be getting a top ten of 2022's Bests. A very delightful top ten list, Ms. Marianna. I would personally swap out X with Scream 5 and The Banshees with Decision to Leave. But for each their own, I know you've put Decision to Leave on the underrated list of 2022. I myself think that it would such a dishonor to the whole Neo Noir genre to not put it on my own personal top ten yearly list. I still barely able to fathom how South Korea has this "bubbly & cheery" of a music industry eerily juxtaposed with its dark, gritty and genuinely nuanced movies they're able to produced. This and many other movies that'd preceded it have shown what they are capable to present to any genre films.

Absolutely incredible video Marianna. Loved it. Awesome list there. What a year for films. Last year was fantastic I thought. Everything everywhere all at once is also my favourite movie of last year. I loved the Batman, and top gun maverick as well. Still need to watch All Quiet on the Western Front. I’ve heard amazing things about it, and I love war films, so will have to get round to watching it soon. Keep up the great work. Also the Banshees of Insherin is amazing as well.👍😃

My favorite hands down is "Everything ....". The acting of all 4 principals, the wonderful ideas found in the film and the sense of joy it elicited in me make it my favorite and I went out and purchased it .

RRR was probably my favorite movie last year. Speak no evil, top gun maverick, the menu, barbarian were all varying levels of entertaining; however speak no evil was probably the most horrific ending in any movie in a long time.

Bravo-- your lists are always so worth the wait-I am excited to see the 6 from this list -i haven't seen yet! i disagree on TAR and Top Gun ,but am considering a rewatch. Banshees was incredible (3rd time just as impressed with the relatability of the characters) once again, --Brava!!!

My top 2 were hands down Banshees and EEAAO - so different from one another but both automatic 5 stars for me upon first viewing and have held up on rewatches. I also loved Turning Red, Cha Cha Real Smooth and the Batman! Nope was great too. And Bones and All. 2022 was a great year for film!

Our top two of the year match 😂 I had both Tar and Everything Everywhere All At Once tied for first. Rounding out the rest of my top 5 are The Northman, Pearl, and Crimes of the Future. Great list! Literally obsessed with this list. We share so many faves. I’ve been so busy this past year so I haven’t really gotten to see a lot of your vids, but this reminded me of why I love your channel so much. I’ve been a subscriber since 2016 I think (maybe earlier). I just love your taste and how you’re so open to challenging or unconventional films. Babylon is hands down my favorite of last year. I’m so glad you appreciated it too. I genuinely cannot comprehend the level of hate it’s gotten, kinda makes me sad because of the obvious amount of work and care that was put into making it. I think you’re right that it will be much more appreciated in the future. The ending gave me chills.

I get why people love Babylon, but the main thing I disliked about it was the comedy. It kind of felt like a 3 hour Key and Peele sketch. I still can’t wait to see what Chazelle does next, I just hope he does something a lot less cartoonish

Thanks for your top 10, Marianna! I always look forward to your thoughts on movies. Tar was the only one that I didn't care for. Critics said the writing and the filmmaking are superb. I get that, but I felt like it was just too pretentious and long-winded for its own good. It is also difficult for me to connect to a character like Tar.

Yea Tar is a movie I've only seen the trailer. One of those movies that I don't know what's going on but also know I won't like it. I'm not interested in movies that deal with petty behaviors of humanity, like cancel-culture. I like movies with heart and soul and hardships. Outlander comes to mind, although not a movie.

Heey that's amazing we have the same top 3! I was convinced I'd love nothing more than EEAAO and then I went to see Tar which I actually lost a day to, because when I came out of the screening at about 3pm I could not stop thinking about it! I may be biased as a classical music nerd but I just found it utterly fascinating- then I watched Babylon which actually ended up being my favourite film of the year! Cannot agree more with what you said about it, I realised it would be polarising but the amount of terrible reviews confused me (thank god for Letterboxd haha I'm not alone on there) all I can say is all hail Justin Hurwitz, give him all the oscars please!!

Tar was amazing and loved Cate's performance. If like Everything, I like to mention the TV series "American Born Chinese" which features Michelle and Ke Huy is fun roles. One of my favorite shows of 2023. Great to see them both again.

Though my list is quite different then yours, I want to share mine and say your list is amazing. My list is a bit blockbuster-y but here it is: 10. Violent Night (I just love the Fight Choreography, the love letter to Home Alone and the comedy cause Action Comedies might be my favorite genre) 9. Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (such a sweet love letter to fashion and the 50's) 8. Barbarian (I loved my theater experience so so much my personal favorite Horror movie of the year) 7. Black Panther Wakanda Forever (Just an amazing Marvel product and movie) 6. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (action comedy that I felt was also somehow a heartfelt family story) 5. Devotion (I absolutely loved this movie, it doesn't have the highest rewatchablity, but it is such a powerful story) 4. Bullet Train (on the other side, super rewatchable fun fun ride) 3. Babylon (The last movie of the year which is likely a shame cause if I’d watched it this year it might have been the top for this year cause I believe it is that good. I really wish I’d been able to see it more then twice in the theater) 2. Top Gun Maverick (no need to say anything here) 1. Elvis (Too much to say about this movie, This is officially the movie I've seen the most times in theaters, one week we saw it 5 times, it re-sparked my absolute love for Elvis Presley, and it will always be a special movie between my best friend and I)

As others have mentioned, 2022 was a great year for film. While there'd be quite a few different movies on my list, I agree all of these (that I've seen) are at the very least good. I'll join the fight with you on Babylon. Incredible, if only for its ambition, though for so many other reasons too.

Great list! Pretty close to my top 10. I would add “The Menu”, “RRR”, and “The Northman” over “Elvis” (wished it had focused less on Tom Hanks), “Babylon” (very entertaining but could have been edited down quite a bit IMO), and “X” (just because I haven’t seen it yet). My Top 3 were “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Everything Everywhere”, and “The Menu”.

I'll give some movies I liked last year but no order then I'll give my favorite of everything I saw. Scream 5 pearl x Tar Deadstream (There's many more but I just can't think of everything right now) My absolute favorite of 2022 is Bones and All. I am very surprised it's not on your list but I also have 0 idea if you liked it or not cuz I haven't looked to see if you reviewed it or not lol. It's just so beautiful and it hit me very hard on a personal level for me cuz its pretty relatable for me and something I've been dealing with for a long time. And I think the cannibalism can be easily thought of as a metaphor for addiction for someone who has dealt with drug addiction or any addiction like myself. I mean yes while it is also kind of tragic and horrific at times it all just comes together to form a beautiful love story. It's just hard to handle the things this movie handles by themselves as subject matter but this movie handles everything so flawlessly that it all feels authentic or natural.

Hello, Marianna, I always believe in giving credit, when credit is due. To that point, I don't know what sparked the change, but I haven't watched a video from this channel for many many months, and I am verrrrry happy to see -- or maybe I should say, hear -- that, at least in my opinion, the manner of speaking has noticeably improved to a point where I no longer find it annoying. I'll also say that three of the films you picked are ones I personally didn't like, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Everyone is a unique individual with their own insight and judgments. I have no idea if and when it would come to fruition but I was wondering if you've read it and, if so, do you think he would be a good director for that story?

Only three overlaps with my top 10 (Triangle of Sadness, Tar and Banshees, plus i've not seen Babylon) but I do appreciate the inclusion of Triangle of Sadness. It seems to have polarized US critics, not seeing it on a lot of lists and it was a fantastic film.

After having the same movies as my favorite of all time for decades (the first 2 Godfathers, Graduate, Annie Hall, etc), I think "Everything Everywhere All At Once" has usurped them all as my favorite movie of all time. And I've only seen it once.

What is that movie clip from at 0:22 seconds. There’s been this trailer I seen to a film that had very interesting weird concepts and visuals and was set to play on Netflix and then it just went ghost and unknown, and I haven’t been able to find it or think of the movie title. It was set to come out during the holiday of 2022. If anyone has any kind of Indication to what this movie is, swear you do not know what you just did for me. I hope this is that movie, but the trailer I saw had an older white guy at as the lead and I remember something with pianos and walking on water and dream sequences, I hope that jogs someone’s memory 😂

"X" had so much potenital and start sooo cool with kind of deeper and interesting characters, good TCM-Atmosphere, etc. - BUT it died for me with the first kill and the "dance". The next kill was also stupid called "the hole" 😞 The final gets better but I was still frustrated by the things before. Besides that I really loved the little twists and special scene of the old couple - it was just so nice to see and how they care about each other with all their suffering. I found it cute and human - not disgusting like many others.

I don't think the old couple are disgusting, I actually really hate this trope in horror movies, the whole "old people are scary because they're old" thing. But I do think "X" walked the line well, and at the end they were scary because they were murdering people, with Pearl being bitter because she didn't get to live the life the way she wanted, not because they were old.

I recently watched Bodies Bodies Bodies and I absolutely loved it. It is an excellent dark comedy. Easily the most surprising movie of 2022 for me.

I endured a group of alleged friends treat each other like garbage the entire time until the older boyfriend went to bed, then I left too. It seems the first half soured me against not seeing what everyone else seems to have enjoyed in this movie.

One of the best years ever for horror/scary movies! The genre definitely needs to somehow be recognized. Being effectively scared is as much an art form as is comedy, another underappreciated art.

Thanks Marianna. A very respectable list. Very close to my own. I was glad to see The Batman show up. I was visiting Prague when it opened. And when Michael Giacchino's final piano sonata came on. I sat in the theatre and listened to the whole thing on the magnificent theatre speakers. It was the same week as the Ukrainian Invasion, and the grittiness of the movie, the darkness of the music, and the seriousness of the war came together in one moment for me. And The Batman struck me as the perfect film to enter the next phase of the 2020s. Just caught Triangle of Sadness, I totally agree. Babylon just opened I'll be seeing it VERY soon. 2022 was indeed the moment that the movies returned. But you know what, I just saw M3GAN, and if that's January, and noting what's coming down the line, I suspect 2023 is going to be one for the books. Let's hope the extreme wokeness will fade and the great stories will return. Oh and Marianna will you be giving us a M3GAN review?

Thank you! My screening of "The Batman" was actually the day the war started, so this is a big reason why I didn't review it and wanted to watch it again - I definitely couldn't fully process the movie at the time. As or "M3GAN" - I did a short review for it, and that's going to be it.
