This was their big comeback hit in 1975. They had gone through a slump and hadn't had a hit song for some time. This was the first single from their R&B influenced album "Main Course", and it soared all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their change over to a more R&B sound paid off for them as the listening public loved it. Two more R&B type singles were released from the album, "Nights On Broadway" and "Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)", and both became hit singles. Their next album was even more influenced by R&B and Funk, and finally, by 1977/78, their sound turned to what was considered mainstream disco, though Barry continued to state that he considered their songs to be R&B and not disco.

Barry Gibb sings lead on this track, taking out his frustrations on a jive talkin' woman telling him lies. She treats him cruel, like a dumbstruck fool, and he's sick of it. He wrote the song with this brothers (also his band mates) Robin and Maurice. The story is fictional: Barry Gibb had been married since 1970 to his wife Linda, a former Miss Edinburgh. This was called "Drive Talking" in its early stages, but producer Arif Mardin suggested the change to "jive" to play to teenage sensibilities. "Jive talkin'" is a term for slang. The rhythm was inspired by the chunka-chunka-chunka sound of a car rolling over a bridge crossing Biscayne Bay near Miami; the Bee Gees went over it on their way to Criteria Studios, where they were recording the Main Course album. Robin Gibb explained to The Mail On Sunday November 1, 2009: "We'd already thought up the title for this song, but it wasn't until Barry, Maurice and I drove from Biscayne Bay to Miami that we realized what the tune was going to be. We had the idea as we passed over a bridge. Some tar noises made a rhythmic sound on the wheels of our car, which created the feel to the type of song we wanted to write. We finished the song at the Criteria Studios that day." (Songfacts.com)

Listening to this song again after all of these years (I’m 61) you think that the synth music was more popular in the 80’s but this was in the late 80’s and yet it has so much synth programming (probably except for the drums ). I remember this song was actually more popular on the R&B/Soul stations and charts , and fun fact, Rufus & Chaka Khan did a great laid back version of this song , too. I remember. It was 1975. I was like in 3rd or 4th grade. I'm in the car with my dad. Car radio is on. Jive Talkin' start playing. Dad's focused on driving but after maybe 30 seconds or so, he begins to register what he's hearing. A look of mild disgust comes over him and he nonchalantly reaches down to change the station. Keep in mind, he was born in 1922 and grew up on Big Band music. I yell out, "No, don't! This is great!" He looked at me like he realized for the first time, I might not be related to him. It was a look of mild surprise and a little sadness. My dad and I got along fine, but we really never saw eye-to-eye when it came to music. Thankfully my time with Disco and whatnot was short-lived and I moved on to metal, classic rock, etc. Oh, yeah, dad changed the station. I mean, I might like that hippy nonsense, but damned if he was going to listen to it. In his own car! 😂
