Cliff Richard is considered to be a living legend in the UK and the rest of the world. When this song came out in 1976 he had already been in the music industry for 18 years starting with his first song “Move It” in 1958 which is credited as the first British rock n roll song. Move It was written by Ian Samwell who was a member of his band at the time. Devil Woman was written by another band member Terry Britten and Christine Author Holmes. A devote Christian many people question why Cliff Richard would record a song like Devil Woman. He explained in his opinion it was a warning against the occult. Devil Woman became his first American top 10 song. A fun fact you probably do not know about Cliff Richard. Although he is still almost unknown here in the USA, in the Uk he has had a number 1 song in the 1950s, the 1960s, the 1970s, the 1980s, the 1990s, and the 2010s. I can’t remember if he had another number 1 song in the 2020s or not. No other artist in history has achieved this accomplishment. True there are artists who continue to have record sales long after they have died, but that’s not the same thing. Although I’m an American born after Beatlemania I have been a Cliff Richard fan for over 40 years. He has had many fans who have followed his career since the beginning in 1958.

Art Bell had a radio show people would call in and he had callers tell their personal ghost stories. A guy from Miami called and said when he was young sometime around 77 or 78, he was working as a night guard. He came home to his roommates, who liked to tinker with occult stuff. They were in the basement doing some sort of ritual with a protection circle, and he sarcastically yelled, "If there is a devil, give us a sign". As soon as he said that, an old broken transistor radio in a locked case that no one could get into (long story involving super glue and a broken key) started playing the chorus to this song when it hadn't worked in years.

Music videos were a new concept in the 1970s, so the quality and style of production was pretty simple compared to what came later, with the advent of MTV in 1981. Cliff Richard was a superstar in the U.K. from the 1950s clear through the 1980s. Many people considered him to be the British equivalent of Elvis Presley. He didn't have quite as much commercial success in the U.S., though, but he had a good, solid run in the late 1970s and early 1980s. "Devil Woman" was his biggest hit in the U.S., peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 25, 1976. It's worth noting that this song spent three consecutive weeks at its #6 peak, so the top of its chart run was literally 6, 6, 6. How fitting for a song named "Devil Woman." In all, Cliff Richard had 21 hits on the Hot 100 from 1959-1983, including nine Top 40 hits, as follows: "Living Doll" (w/ The Drifters) (#30 in 1959) "It's All In The Game" (#25 in 1964) "Devil Woman" (#6 in 1976) "We Don't Talk Anymore (#7 in 1980) "Carrie" (#34 in 1980) "Dreaming" (#10 in 1980) "Suddenly (w/ Olivia Newton-John) (#20 in 1981) "A Little In Love" (#17 in 1981) "Daddy's Home" (#23 in 1982) I'd highly recommend "We Don't Talk Anymore," "Dreaming," "Suddenly" and "A Little In Love." And speaking of music videos and MTV, "A Little In Love" made history as one of the first 100 music videos aired on the first day of MTV (August 1, 1981). It was the 68th, to be exact.

Cliff Richard had 69 Top Ten singles in the UK. But just 3 in the US (Devil Woman ironically was #9 in the UK but #6 in the US).

You should listen to David Essex “Rock on” , and watch the video…I just thought of him when watching this. Another good Cliff Richard song is “Some People” ❤️

The song was written by Terry Brittan and Christine Authors. The song is told from the point of a view of a man jinxed from an encounter with a stray cat with evil eyes, and his discovery that the psychic medium whose help he sought to break the curse was the one responsible for the curse in the first place. However, the nature of the curse is not made clear.

Cliff's first hit was way back in the 50s and he's been an institution in the UK ever since, hovering somewhere between national treasure and joke status. Your gran would love him

We had the King of Rock n Roll, the Prince, the Madonna, We had Queen, We had the Peter Pan of Pop, interesting we have only eve had one King, been a few Prince’s, but most know there’s only one Prince, but Cliff Richard was the OG Peter Pan of pop, eventually that handle went to Michael Jackson. One of the best selling artists of all time Sir Cliff. He was huge over a atleast 3 decades he kept making hit music staying relevant.

A major British pop figure in the UK, pre-dating the Beatles (who borrowed some points of style from him), but, despite some hits, never became a force in the States. Well, until he was a nostalgia act and succumbed to disco in the late 70s, as here. I remember being rather shocked upon learning that the guy who sang the dopey "Devil Woman" was such a big deal across the pond.

A huge star in the UK (and Europe, Far East, etc.) with a long string of hits & a handful of movies. Not so much in the USA. Originally, his backing band was The Shadows, who are worth a listen, although they mostly did instrumentals -- try Apache.
