It’s not that they spoke out against the war, it was how they did it. It nearly ended the Dixie chicks and they had to go actually underground for a while to let things cool down. You can attacked administration. We got attacked policies. What you cannot do is attack the men and women fighting. That’s why they got no respect.

I had a friend who’s daughter passed away in her 30s when this song came out. The daughter loved this song, so they played it at her funeral!! The girl next to me kept going on about how I inappropriate it was. I thought it was great and probably made her smile.

The liner notes to the album on which this track first appeared ( '99's "Fly"), contained the following disclaimer: " The Dixie Chicks do not advocate premeditated murder, but do love getting even". (There had been more than just a little controversy regarding the "tone" of the song, w/ some radio stations refusing to play it.)

Those radio stations were wack. Anyone who beats their spouse/children deserve death. The restraining order didn't work so they used a permanent method to get rid of their abusive problem.

I grew up on these women, they used to play at Cook’s children’s hospital in Fort Worth and I have multiple pics of them holding me at 1 month old. I knew their lyrics before I even knew what they were talking about. Long love the Chicks, they make me proud to be a woman and a Texan

I LOVED the Dixie Chicks, they had so many hits in the 90s and early 2000s. I always bounce around when this song comes on. Them getting cancelled was the stupidest Def do more of their songs, they have some really good ones. "Not Ready to Make Nice" is fantastic.

I agree the backlash, especially to that degree was stupid. She had every right to voice her opinion. However, from what I remember it wasn't so much what she said but rather where she said it. She didn't say it in the US because she knew what reaction she would receive from the majority of people. Instead she did it in London England. The people I know about it was that factor more than what she said.

I've just seen them in concert like 3 weeks ago. There is something about being in a large group and singing along to this song that is a hard feeling to describe. Its just amazing. I've seen them for every tour they ever did, except the very first one and this song always KILLS! You all need to play Top of The World, it will make you cry. Guys this song is a happy song, cathartic for all the negative feels you get when you cut out the bad. Listen to more!

I loooove this song so much, my take on it is basically it's a funnier way of saying "if you're disgusting enough to abuse women, you get whatever's coming to you and no one's going to feel bad for you bye". My fave Chicks song is probably Cowboy Take Me Away, but they also do a gorgeous cover of Fleetwood Mac's Landslide

Funny you compared them to Toby Keith. The lead singer Natalie Main got into a feud with Toby Keith before they got in trouble over their stance on the war in Iraq. She said Toby couldn't write worth a damn. She couldn't stand him. She went so far as to show up at an awards show with a t shirt that said FUTK on it. Don't think she would like the comparison very much...lol. They have since gotten back in good graces with Nashville and changed their name to The Chicks. Had to drop the Dixie because of cancel culture...lol

This is a funny song about a serious problem…and I love it, in a fantasize about righting wrongs kinda way, not an actual solution. Yeah, Lex, sometimes people do actually get away with murder. You should do more (Dixie) Chicks songs, though. They have some great ones…Wide Open Spaces, their cover of Landslide, Let ‘Er Rip, Long Time Gone, Tonight the Heartache’s On Me, many more.
