Joe Jackson is a legend. This is such a nice song, and it takes me back to a specific time and place in my life more than most other songs can do (although I was too young to go to clubs at the time, lol). The lyrics are SO evocative, like remembering those giddy moments from a date that went really well: You...are dressed in pink and blue just like a child And in a yellow taxi turned to me and smiled "We'll be there in just a while"

This song is considered New Wave because of the electronic beat in the background which was part of the wave of new music styles emerging back then. But the piano and melodic singing added a "mature" twist to this song. Absolute genius!

Its weird how accurately a song can portray a feeling just through the music, right? I LOOVE this song, and have ever since it came out in my early teens, and hearing it again, I hear the 80's in the synths, the 70's in the piano, and in the lyrics such a nostalgia for times past. How accurately it conveyed the same thoughts to you two...

I also sometimes like to play on repeat on planes because it’s like a mantra where the repetition of the beat helps me fall asleep. I think the instrument you were trying to figure out was the baseline played on keyboards.

Written by Joe Jackson. He took the title from the jazz song 🎵 The lyrics reflected his days living in New York in the 1970s and early 1980s. Meanwhile, John Waite was living there in New York too. Both British 🇬🇧 singers moved : JJ to Berlin and JW to Los Angeles. 40 years old 🎂 1 of the great modern rock / pop songs not needing a guitar! Suggested songs 1 Joe Jackson performs Breaking Us in Two. 2 Suzanne Vega and Joe Jackson perform Solitude Standing 🧍‍♂️ 🧍‍♀️

"Steppin' Out" always makes me think of evening twilight and nightfall, for three reasons: 1) Every memory I have of hearing it in my early childhood was at nighttime or on the precipice of night. 2) It was a hit in the month of December, the darkest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. 3) Overall, it has a dusky, dreamy sound to it, especially with the chimes. The chord progressions might play a part in that too, because they're what I love the most about it, especially in the chorus. This song is Joe Jackson's biggest hit and signature song, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 11, 1982. In all, he had four Top 40 hits: "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" (#21 in 1979) "Steppin' Out" (#6 in 1982) "Breaking Us In Two" (#18 in 1983) "You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)" (#15 in 1984) I definitely recommend listening to the three others on that list, as well as an uncharted song of his called "I'm The Man." I'd also recommend listening to Sugar Ray's 2003 cover of "Is She Really Going Out With Him?," which they did an excellent job with.

He originated that sound; it's been sampled by other people. This song is from his "Night and Day" album, and it's the last song on its side of the LP, so you've heard a variety of songs, then it slips into the smoothness of this one. Joe's voice can have an edginess to it, apparent in songs from his earlier albums that were almost a little punky; "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" was probably the biggest hit off Look Sharp, and "I'm the Man" was another punky-sounding hit off an album of the same name. Joe Jackson is one of the amazing talents of the '80s. His "Big World" album, which is only available as an import, is to me the best album of that decade. Such a diversity of song styles and subjects, all with an international theme. Great songs from it include "Jet Set" (about the tacky British and American tourists traveling abroad), "Tango Atlantico" (about the Falkland Islands war), "Home Town", and "Survival". Each of them have a very different sound from the others. Do more stuff by him; you'll be amazed at how everything sounds a little different, but still has that unmistakable Joe Jackson sound; he's sort of like Cake with that ability!

(Although I did like Steppin Out) But it wasn't until I started listening to entire records from him that I appreciated his genius and the "hits" started making more sense in the context of the entire album. This is like smooth Jazzy new wave. Similar to Level 42 and Simply Red. Loved his videos when I was a kid growing up in the '80s. Joe Jackson always so smooth, soulful voice, even when he was doing punkier post-punk songs. He's also a great pianist. 🎹. Check out his other videos. He's been around for a long time. '70s, '80s and '90s.

I just saw Joe Jackson in concert about a month ago. He played this song and mentioned how the cheesy 80s synth thing was not his idea. He played a stripped down, mostly piano version. It was great.

I can remember the first time I heard this when it first came out. I think I was about 7, in the car on a long road trip from Florida to Philly. It was on the radio and when it was over I wanted to hear it again but you know, radio. I never forgot it but never actually heard it again until years later.

I was 18 when this song came out . I had just fallen in love for the first time. She left me soon after and this track is a soundtrack to the brief romance we had. What a great song to remember fleeting, shy teenage affections

As a kid when I would hear this song on the radio, I would picture an older film where the guys and ladies were dressed to the nines and going out to the old dancing and supper clubs (like in White Christmas, Holiday Inn). I always wished I could be that woman. LOL…my hubby doesn’t dance.

Hey Brad, great REACTION! I believe the instrument you were asking about either the bass guitar or keyboard bass. Thanks for sharing! - Bob

You're right. For lack of a better description it was a bass synth. That and an early drum machine.
@PjRjHj
@PjRjHj 2 года назад
It sounds like bass played from a keyboard instrument (not necessarily a synth). It can be played on the Bass guitar too, it just requires more stamina than playing it on on keys. The Bass guitar may have too much auditable dynamics while keys would offer a more consistent pulse.

@@dggydddy59 and @PjRjHj, both excellent points on the bass. 70's rock evolved from the traditional drum and bass guitar to more electronic instruments in the early 80s with the electronic bass (and the drum machine.) Thanks! Bob

I've watched that music video for the first time about just a week ago, after searching for that song, heard it in Grand Theft Auto Vice City. And now you made this reaction video, what a coincidence. Love a lot of 80's songs from that game, 80s r the best!

Joe Jackson has a direct to metal tape live recording from back in the late 1980's or maybe early 1990's. A masterpiece. I need to dig it out as it's been a few years since I have listened to it.

Joe Jackson is a brilliant musician for sophisticated fans. He writes in a wide range of styles and is well aware of the limitations in his voice as a musical instrument. He gets around this with both writing techniques as well as rotating from a large studio musician pool based on who can play what style best. This is an artist you WANT to explore!

*I MISS YOU 82!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* *Steppin' Out is near the top of my Eighties Faves --- along with Forget Me Nots by Patrice Rushen and Love Come Down by Evelyn "Champagne" King.* So Eighties Glorious! And the absolutely mesmerizing Korg KR-55 synth melody ---- oh so deliciously and melancholically 80s!
