This artist was ahead of his time in trying to bring awareness to the inequalities and struggles in the world during that period which are still as relevant today. I was just 3 houses down from Marvin when he was shot. I vividly remember my heart stopped for a second and my face immediately turning to my friend and asking him, "what's that gun fire?" ....Within seconds the sky was covered with news media helicopters. A moment I will never forget !!

My second favorite song of all time! The album this from is pretty great as well. It really was a stretch for Motown to put this out, a social observation. But the times, they be a changing. Marvin had a fantastic voice. You'll notice what sounds like background singer but it's Marvin. He's just grooving in the background. Coolness.

1971. A tumultuous time. The Vietnam war was winding down. Nixon had promised to end the war and he was at least keeping that promise, anyway. But when he promised, "I am not a crook......, well we know how that worked out. As I said the war was winding down, but the protests continued. I was in agreement with the protests. Today, knowing all I now know, I'm not so sure we were right. Gerald Ford showed his metal in ending the war and his quick decisive actions in the Mayaguez incident. He earned my respect and I was a liberal in those days. That being said, this is an iconic song and right or wrong, it's a page in history. Ah, 1971. I was 16 years old and just beginning my truly rebellious years. lol Brings back fond memories.

This song was released 1971, five years before I was born. I remember (as a very young child) hearing this song and being profoundly depressed. I didn't learn about racism until I was in first grade Sherwood Elementary School (Memphis TN) from a student named Michael Cook.

Lex, you have the ability to instantly get right into the groove . I grew up in Motown area in the 50s and 60s, Ray, Dionne, Marvin and Tammi, Stevie, Al Green, The Temptations, The Tops, The Supremes, Martha, Smokey, Roberta, Donny and gave me a life heart felt love of Soul music. All through the later decades, Isaac, Barry, Luther, Teddy, Anita, on and on, so many Great voices. This album dropped when I got back from Vietnam in 1971, it was on another level, the acclaim that it received was unbelievable. Wore out the vinyl over and over. This album is a masterpiece and you need to react to other songs on album. Inner City Blues, Mercy Mercy Me. Still considered top 5 albums ever made. Just ask your parents and grandparents about this album and what it meant to them. Changed my life. React to Lisa Fischer and her Grammy masterpiece, "How Can I Ease The Pain".

I'm pretty sure he didn't play most of the instruments. I think that's him on piano, and he was once a drummer, so it could - possibly - be him on drums, but it probably isn't; as someone else has said, it's James Jamerson on bass, and Marvin didn't play guitar.

Very iconic Vietnam war protest song. I remember every night on the news as a high school kid, watching the protests in the streets, and wondering if the war would end before I turned 18 and graduated. My Brother went to Vietnam 3 tears earlier. Everyone in every neighborhood across America, had a brother, cousin or friend, that was in Vietnam. The same could be said of WWII in the 1940s. War is always horrible, but sometimes necessary.

This song has an emphatic message in the lyrics. Everything from 'war is not the answer', to 'only love can conquer hate'. I listened to "What's Going On" when it was released (1971). Now in 2023, I have another view of the lyric "Who are they to judge us Simply 'cause our hair is long?". Now I think about Dr.J, with his big afro. Back when he was in the ABA teams the Virginia Squires and the New Jersey Nets. "What's Going On" is such a impactful song that it has been covered by other vocalists and musicians. The Chaka Khan version on the "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" the 2002 documentary on The Funk Brothers, is just one of my favorites. But, I remember that "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" as being the song I like best from his album.

It's amazing to me that you could listen to this and not hear the lyrics - what they were saying about the social, political and moral atmosphere of the time (and even of today). When this first came out, "we" were astounded that Marvin could capture what we were feeling in a song that was so smooth and listenable as this. "What's Going On" was written by three golfing buddies who also happened to be Motown hitmakers: songwriter Al Cleveland, Four Tops member Renaldo "Obie" Benson and singer Marvin Gaye, who added lyrics and worked on the arrangement. Gaye wanted the Originals to record the song, but Benson and Cleveland prevailed upon Gaye to do it himself. Until this song, Gaye rarely participated in the songwriting process. For this album, he took control of the production so he could make a statement as an artist. Motown management was skeptical, but Gaye was an established star and had enough power to pull it off, going so far as to use an orchestra on this track. Gaye's lyrics in this song were inspired by the stories his brother Frankie told him when he came back from the Vietnam War. This was one of the first Motown songs to make a powerful political statement. Stevie Wonder and the Temptations were also recording more serious and challenging material, which was a radical departure from the Motown hits of the '60s. The song had a tremendous impact because listeners weren't used to hearing social commentary from Gaye. As Jackson Browne said in a 2008 interview with Rolling Stone: "No one was expecting an anti-war song from him. But it was a moment in time when people were willing to hear it from anybody, if it was heartfelt. And who better than the person who has talked to you about love and desire?" (Songfacts.com)

Marvin Gaye got his start with Motown where he had all those beautiful duets with Tami Terrell! He broke away because wanted to do more serious music and this was one of the songs he did about what was going in socially at that time! People were protesting the Vietnam War as well as civil rights! The thing about this song is that it is still relevant today with all the police brutality and protesting about many injustices! Great song!❤❤

There was a Detroit newscaster told me a story on the radio that what he was a kid Petland papers in Detroit with his buddy because it was a big route, are used to deliver to Marvin and every day they went by he would see them Marvin hey Marvin what’s going on! This was believe it or not before the song came out! So he felt he had something to do with that song

Beautiful classic song with still-meaningful lyrics sung by an absolute legend. It also has an awesome bass part which was played by the legendary session player, James Jamerson, who played bass on most of the Motown hits in the 60's and early 70's.

This issue of jealousy had been going on for a long time, the father being jealous one, it's been a few decades since I last encountered this sad story, but they have several documentaries here in RU-vid. But I do believe it was dear old dad that came after Marvin. Cheers

My number one song of all time. When I hear it, it breaks my heart even still. The sights, smells and aura of those times, growing up in Brooklyn, the streets, the confusion, the changes of the times, the turmoil, the air of major transitions taking place, the whole thing comes rushing back to my senses when I hear this song. If there's a song that evokes that period while still being relevant to today, I'd like to know what it is, because this one is IT. What's Going On is easily one of the most important music albums ever made. The title song is spectacular, but so is the rest of the album. AND...the musical chances that Marvin Gaye took in this album broke the mold. Lastly, if you understand how music was evolving at the time, you will get just how impactful of a song this was, both musically and societally.
