The song was written by Hetfield while he was on tour and being homesick. It's really about long-distance relationships and how hard it is to maintain them while on the road. The song wasn't meant to be released but when Lars heard James play it, he loved it and convinced him to put it on the album.

At the time, my big brother felt that Metallica had 'sold out' with the Black Album. This is when I finally could actually get into their music, when they softened up just a little bit (he had played them to DEATH and LOUD around our house and I was SO SICK of hearing their older stuff. Then they did this and I LOVED it!). My brother doesn't understand economics. He still doesn't get that the band was about to go broke because there was NO WAY they would get ever have been able to break into the 'mainstream' with the way they had been doing things from day one. Instead of declaring bankruptcy and breaking up, they went in a different direction. My brother hated it, still doesn't listen to anything from the Black Album. What in idiot. He's missing out on so much great writing!

Lex had it nailed from the jump. It was about "i'm doing me and being true to me" i don't need to listen or care what you have to say. I don't need to be like everyone else. This song was composed with the help of Michael Kamen (a music composer for big production movies). The beat is written as a waltz (one-two-three-one-two-three-one-two-three) as opposed to most popular rock music composed with a 4/4 signature (which is something I didn't realize myself until about 10 years ago when I started drumming).

I remember when this first came out and all the whiny "You sold out" malarkey... everyone wanting to attribute all kinds of jacked up shite about the song and style... but it was a straight up tribute to the 'brotherhood' of the band. Didn't matter how far apart they were, they were still close friends, They trusted in who they were from deep down in their hearts and they didn't give a flying "F" what anybody else said about it... People don't often open up to just how strongly they feel and how they want to live, and they made the choice to do so and they meant it with the power of an oath... nothing else mattered... They trusted each other, they found new paths and things together and they kept an open mind to consider things carefully without jumping to conclusions... The lyrics really tell the story the way it is... Metallica didn't give a shit about what other people thought or what they did or even claimed to "know" (because the critics generally didn't have a clue anyway) and they were essentially saying I don't give a damn about other people's games and feelings... this was who Metallica was, how they felt, and the way they wanted to live and do things. If someone else had a "problem" with it then that someone could just F**k off, because the group did not care beyond those they chose to be close to. Too bad that there are many people who just can't get that basic message and insist that there has to be "something more" to it... Nope... it really is just that simple.

I heard this song for the first time as a grandma in her 60's and I think I'm in the time of my life where this speaks layers to me that I cannot put into words. I'm on the downhill side of life. He's talking about the cultural mores that tell a person how to have a relationship, how to live life. They have to do it differently because of the band tours. And so forth. Thanks for pulling up the lyrics. It is like the world has embraced this song. And I, the grandma, can play this song on repeat for hours. I'm subscribing because it seems like you like to learn. 💜

So in the 80's there was a short-lived period where even the heaviest of bands were writing power ballads. This is considered Metallica's ballad, written by James for his wife when he was missing her while being on tour, and it came at a time where James was learning classical guitar.

Besides it looks like that song came out before the 80's ballad bandwagon that everyone jumped on, ie; late 80s. One of the best metal ballads ever written. Everything fits so well together here and this was basically what started the more modern metallica back then. The black album really brought them into everyones focus, not just the metal core community. The 90s were such an amazing time for us kids back then, growing up with giants like Metallica, Aerosmith, GnR and even many of the older legends from 70s and 80s before it all changed so quickly in the 2000s to more over produced fast food music.

It is highly advised to always have the lyrics at hand when listening to Metallica, the lyrics make the song as much as the instruments. This is the only relaxed Metallica song though. One of my personal favourites is Orion, an instrumental arranged by Cliff Burton, the brilliant bassist who sadly died in a tourbus accident. He was classically trained and made a very intricate song. Listen to it with your eyes closed, it's insane. Also nearly impossible to pause.

For some background on this song, this is a song he somewhat made for James Hetfield's girlfriend at the time to be played over the phone. Add in some more lyrics to go along with it and you have a song James was scared to release since it was an unprecedented song in Metallica history. Add in James training his vocals with some of his business partners and you have the song right here. Also quick fun fact: James Hetfield (rhythm guitarist and singer) actually played all the guitar for the song since Kirk Hammett (lead guitarist) didn't have time to learn the song from James and play it. Edit: Nvm, just saw the end of the video of you guys reading the info from genius. But still.

Good one guys..sorta been waiting on you two to hear this side of Metallica. Gotta remember most bands are kids in the beginning say age 21-24...if your great like Metallica then your lucky enough to hold a fan base beyond those years but that fan base has to be wise enough to allow you your natural maturity which your style and music will be a direct reflection of. Alot of fans act like a band should never change from the time they started young. unrealistic., the same fans that dislike this era of Metallica are the same fans just mentioned.

Good point. I remember hearing the "Black" album for the first time and feeling a bit let down, or maybe like they alienated me (us), but then I started to like it quite a bit, but differently than the others, even though I'd only been introduced to them a year or two earlier. What did irritate me, was those "new fans" that would have never considered listened to the former Metallica albums.

@@R777-RLM Good point as well...bottom line bands change if they are good enough to stick around, and so will the fans

I will say this. I sub to several reaction channels but this one keeps me coming back daily. Something about your interpretation is spot on. Metal Heads such as myself aren't really into Metallica doing covers, but YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO "Whiskey In a Jar" I, for one, love this version and it isn't the (something I can't place it) that Metallica is really known for. Enjoy.

Love the conversation. The difference between fans not liking artists being free to develop their art freely I feel is this: fans who want to get something from the art/ artists or fans wanting to receive whatever/ wherever the artist takes them. Have you done Wherever I may roam? I always think of Metallica in the context of a motorcycle gang. But I love them most for their honesty asking life’s questions.

This song can mean different things to people. I know a couple that used it for their wedding. And I used it as one of a half dozen ballads in an anniversary video I made for my wife. It’s a great song.

Cliff Burton's death and life on the road finally caught up to Metallica. This album is a reflection of their maturation as men and musicians. They grew up even if their angry fans didn't.

I’ll never forget, album release day buddy of mine gets it. We’re cruising around w/some others listening, get about halfway through this song and (Will) decided that it wasn’t metal enough and chunks it out the window. Some laughed, some cried, great times!

Per Hetfield, it's essentially a love song. The way I interpret it is that the noise around you trying to dictate who you become or who you are or what people expect of you is not more important than the love you have at home.
