🎵 ORB & SCEPTRE by William Walton (I prefer this to CROWN IMPERIAL)

Yep - on the organ at least, I think 'Orb and Sceptre' is a better piece than 'Crown Imperial'. I like it's exciting harmonic progressions, fanfares and the big melody in the inner sections.
As with Crown Imperial, it was written by Walton for the Coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953.
This is played on the trusty old Hauptwerk Marcussen organ of St Laurenskerk in Rotterdam (Netherlands) sampled by Sonus Paradisi.

Sir Richard, Thank you so much for walking me down Memory Lane with "Orb and Sceptre." Your registration of it is so refreshing and invigorating. Watching your videos over and over again is for me like being with my favourite organ pedagogue. I'm not afraid of acknowledging how educationally beneficial your vids are for me even though I have been playing the organ for over 45 years, 40 of them in official function. So everybody, if you haven't yet come aboard, please do. Start your day with Sir Richard McVeigh - You won't regret it.

Beautifully played. Think I will only be able to play this in my dreams. Still I can dream. Best wishes from Susan, an adequate organist!

Bravo! I love this - I agree with you and I think I shall have to add this to my "to-do" pile - a fantastic performance. And I loved the little video clip of Sir William at the beginning. Thank you for continued inspiration and sharing joyful music with us!

My absolute favourite Walton, possibly my favourite March full stop. I was given the score for my birthday last year but haven’t had the bravery to learn it yet! It does sound great on this organ. Fab job Richard, thank you.

It’s much harder than the Murrill arrangement Crown Imperial, but it’s well worth the effort 😊

One of my fav compositions!... I'm used to listen to this as military band music, but this performance sounds robust and refreshing! Keep it up Richard :)

Such a very nice piece, I discovered it only a few months ago... I like the spirit and the harmonies fitting for the time it was written. Very well played! ;)

I must admit I had never heard this before, but I do like it! I play the Crown Imperial so I must try it one day.

It’s well worth the effort, but be warned - it’s considerably harder than Crown Imperial! I just need a good English organ on which to play it now!!

I know how much Richard loves that good old Marcussen, but why not play it on an English organ? And also, why not produce a video comparing the various national styles so we all can hear the differences using the same piece(s) of music? Just a thought.

Hi Chad, thank you for your comment! Richard doesn’t currently play a UK cathedral Hauptwerk sample set as he likes to use a set that has been recorded in surround rather than stereo. If an English Cathedral organ is ever recorded for Hauptwerk in the future in surround, he will certainly use it for repertoire like this and comparison videos would be fun!

When played on organ, I agree with you. Mister Mcveigh, is there any free organ for Hauptwerk that has chimes available?

Free Chimes? I don't know of any free organs with those unfortunately...

@@beautyinsound I see... Mister McVeigh, listen to the first minute of this organ piece: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--RfARu_evak.html Do you know a virtual organ with an equal/similar sound? It doesn't matter if it is not free. I loved those sounds, I must have them.

Richard, I think I'm right in saying that Orb & Sceptre was written for the Coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953

That is what I thought. It seems Richard just worded it slightly incorrect.

Hello Mister Mcveigh, Thanks for this beautiful piece of William Walton. My I ask, do you know If there is a keyboard version of his ‘ Marche for the history of the Englisch speaking people’? My favorite piece of Mr. Walton.

@@beautyinsound Yes, I did, but not succeed. I found out the piece isn’t published. Only I private orchestrated version is in circulation. You can find this music at RU-vid.

Hi! Could any one tell me what the difference is, between the new english hymnal from 1986 and 1994? Which one does Richard play out of? Thank you!
@beautyinsound
@beautyinsound 3 года назад
The NEH went through minor revisions - punctuation mistakes, wrong notes in the music, adding modern composers' years of their death etc. The content of the actual hymn book has remained the same, and there is a New New English Hymnal coming out imminently.
