In high school, at around grade 10 or 11, a Swedish exchange student came over to spend a year at our school. She brought her music with her, and this was one of the albums she had. This was a full 3/4 of a year before Roxette actually released their album in North America. Our class was all over this.
Must have been the original version, this one was re-recorded for the Pretty woman soundtrack after Roxette had big hits in the US with the Look and Listen to your heart. But the earlier version was a stand alone 7"released between Pearls of Passion and Look Sharp!
Oh, that must have been really cool hearing them early on and then watch their popularity explode becoming megastars. :) Funny, since it was the exact opposit that made them big. An American exchange student went to Sweden and brought back a tape that he took to a local radio station. The rest is history.
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "Listen to Your Heart"!! 4 #1 hits, 2 #2 hits in the US. They were even bigger in Europe and huge in their home of Sweden.
They got f'ed by their label in the US. EMI Sweden signed them, they both had carreers in Sweden before they formed Roxette and their idea was to get international releases. EMI North America passed on them, then an exchange student brought a copy of Look Sharp! to the US, played it to a DJ and it became a radio hit, when people called in, so finally EMI NA picked them up. After Joyride EMI NA tried to pressure them into releasing their MTV unplugged session as an album, instead they made Tourism. And then EMI NA put all the songs that wound up as singles from Crash Boom Bang on a maxi CD, which would be disseminated as a free promo at McDonnalds. That led to the album not selling well. Then Roxette got dropped. They remained big everywhere but the US and Canada, with the following albums not even getting released in either country. And arguably Have a nice day was their best record.
@@simongunkel7457 Here are links to interviews with Per Giselle where he tells the story behind the song "The Look" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jaUUYBiZbCU.html and "It Must Have Been Love". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9b9u2L5H7Hg.html Both interviews about 6 minutes long. Sometimes you just need a bit of luck, or someone to champion your song.
Roxette is a duo... the "Guy's voice" is the songwriter of the 2 - Per Gessle... (the late) Marie Fredriksson did the lead vocals... Per Gessle did lead vocals on a few Roxette songs like 'The Look'... 'Joyride'... but Marie sang most of Roxette's songs. Sadly, she passed away in 2019 after years of battling cancer. "It must have been love" was originally a sad Christmas song, but the producers of the 1990 movie 'Pretty woman' wanted it on the soundtrack, and Per Gessle finally obliged by changing the lyrics and Marie re-recorded the vocals for the movie. It became their biggest hit single in their career in '90.
This song became huge in the US when it was used in the blockbuster movie Petty Woman starring Julia Roberts about 2 years after it was originally released.
The guy playing the Guitar , Per, is an iconic hitmaker... He has produced a lot of Nr1 songs with his Swedish band also ..!!! Add it up and I found info saying he produced and sold 80+million records/albums.. He sure got talent!!! RIP Marie.. she had an awesome voice live ..(and struggled for 16 yrs of living with braincancer),, and also RIP drummer Pelle Alsing.. We miss you!! ..(used to meet him at the local cafe here in Stockholm, such a sweet soul!)
I don't think they read comments or research songs. They pump out like three or four a day without mention of the origin or such. So don't get your hopes up, they totally missed the history of this song as they do with all other, they're just churning out songs. 🤨
"The guitarist" is Per Håkan Gessle, the mastermind behind Roxette, he wrote ALL 4 US-billboards #1s - and about 20 worldwide chartbreakers, a hero in Sweden and one of the richest inhabitants after the ABBA-guys and the IKEA founder.
The whole soundtrack for "Pretty Woman " is brilliant! My favourite is "Fallen " by Lauren Wood. Lovely memories of going to see it in the cinema with my late hubby when we were only going out. Such a feel good movie that he came out wanting to go shopping & all the shops were shut!!😜
Soundtracks for movies used to be great back in the day. I was thinking about that recently with the new Top Gun movie and how the first one had a classic soundtrack. Pretty Women I used to have on cassette as well.
Love roxette, teenage crush memories. We had an orchestral cover of one of their songs at our wedding, Almost Unreal. Plenty of song choices to look at. RIP Marie.
RIP Marie. Nice reaction guys, a lot of comments for other songs by Roxette, but one that I don’t see mentioned is probably my favorite “Fading Like a Flower”.
To be clear, the beginning wasn't just a guy. The guy and her were both singing in harmony. Great reaction to a great 1990 song that was part of the Pretty Woman movie soundtrack.
Great reaction. I used to love this song. She had a great voice. More of an up-tempo one of theirs was "Dangerous", and perhaps my favorite. RIP Marie, as others have pointed out.
Roxette sold around 80 million records. SO many awesome songs! Maybe check out Listen to your heart, Fading like a flower, The look, Sleeping in my car and Anyone. Those songs will give you an all round feel and you won't be disappointed 👌👌👌
Roxette is an outstanding band from this era. Their absolute best song is probably "Listen To Your Heart" (there is also a fantastic cover by DHT but there's no beating the original). I'd also highly recommend their song "Fading Like A Flower". Hope you guys get around to 'em.
Loved this song when I was a kid brilliant and me and my mates all fancied her like crazy! Lol 😅 they were great her voice amazing vocals not bad lyrics either, very catchy mainly though.. they had a couple of big hits back then. Great video review! Cheers from London 👍😎🏴
faster paced songs by them I'd recommend include "The Look", "Paint", and "Dangerous". But if you want their absolute best powerful (if slower) song, look no further than "Listen To Your Heart".
Yeah brad you have right there it was Per Gessle a very famos artist in sweden hi was playing guitar in here but hi sing at the same time as marie in the start👍🏾❤️❤️ THX for a good reaction on Roxette..❤️❤️👍🏾🇸🇪
I went to the last Roxette concert tour just before she died. I never actually liked Roxette, but it was my childhood. I always remember my lady cousins singing these songs. Really bad songs, but really good memories of my cousins singing the songs and havinf so much fun doing it...
I had the great fortune of meeting them right before they really broke here in the US. Must have been late summer of either '88 or '89. They were on their way to a gig in San Bernardino and got a cracked radiator hose. We were at the Union 76 station at the junction of Highway 138 and I-15. Sunday evening and the 76 didn't have a replacement and the NAPA across the street was already closed. I had all my tools with me, wound up cutting the bad part out at the flange and stretching ti to the max and getting it sealed. She had that spikey hair, Tight tight tight black leather pants, a white men's dress shirt open at the collar with a loose tie, and a purple/magenta sequined vest. Language was a bit of a barrier, they seemed like really good folks. LoL, the ex slept on the couch for three nights, certain that if we had sex I'd be thinking of Marie and not her....Hell, she may have been right too...
This is, or at least was, the most played song on american radio ever! Not bad for two childhood friends from Sweden that joined together for this band. Both had great careers before that.
ts not really the music i regulary listen too, but i was around 20 when this song was in the charts and it connects to so much memories and remembering that the singer Marie Fredriksson died a few years ago at the age of 61 from cancer makes me cry.
"step touch, step touch, back front" - the basics of swing dancing - exemplified beautifully in "Swing Kids" (1993) , German youth use swing dancing as a form of protest against Nazi oppression.
Most amazing song. Roxette is brilliant. Happy to say that Per Gessle has decided to continue as PG ROXETTE. The new PG ROXETTE single/video "The Loneliest Girl In The World" is released on May 3, 2022 and a new album in September 2022. Let's keep the memory and legacy of Roxette alive.
The movie Pretty Woman was almost ready for the theatres when someone in the crew heard this song and instantly loved it!! The person wanted it so bad to be featured in the Pretty Woman movie. They contacted Per who wasn't fully convinced he thought like Richard Gere was passé and no one really knew who Julia Roberts was. Eventually Per gave them permission to use it in the movie and i'm pretty sure he never regret he did!
