She was pretty damn big in the UK too. Roxette was one of my favourites in school in the early and mid 1990s. It was probably her that pushed me to my current taste in music which, aside from Pink Floyd and Queen, ALL of my favourite bands are fronted by women - Amy Lee, Lzzy Hale, Beth Orton, Birdy, even some lesser known musicians such as Judith de los Santos and Juliette Valduriez. I can't resist a female vocalist, particularly one with a strong, distinctive voice (although in the case of the last one on my list, it's more her guitar work than her voice!)

@@Absolute.Virtue Yes and 4 years later she was declared healthy from cancer. Treating cancer is very tough for the whole body and especially the organs surrounding the tumor. If the cancer itself is severe then usually the side effects of the treatment is severe as well, to generalise you can say it takes tougher treatment to get rid of it. Unfortunately that was the case for her. So sad and extremely frustrating to get rid of a deadly disease just to get deadly side effects from treatment instead 🙁. This disease is a monster.

Per Gessle said it best - "Thankyou for bringing color to my black and white songs." He was the main songwriter, and a capable singer in his own right, but he knew the biggest anthems, power ballads, what have you, would do better with her voice. He has even said that his songwriting improved greatly because he had found such a great voice to write for.

Same. My friends made fun of me for having my Roxettes in-between my AC/DCs, Metallica and Maidens. I just freakin' loved their music. The melodies stuck with me, and I still listen to Roxette long after the metal stuff faded into memory. And boy, what a beauty she was!

@@chuckmoser8125 I still listen to both metal and Roxette, no shame there. I knew she had been ill for a while but I didn't know she passed. I just visited Sweden for the first time last year and thought about her... a story from the very early '90s: I was at this summer art camp in the mountains and all of us there spread over this meadow to paint. Me and a couple of others (we were 13-14) went to this log cabin to get something or another. There were two older (and much cooler) metalheads sitting on a log with a boombox, listening to Pantera. As Walk ended, one of them changed the tape and Listen to Your Heart started playing. The other one tried to make fun of him but he just shrugged and said "I like the song, dude."

Words can't express how much this video means to me. I first heard Roxette on the radio in 1991. I actually heard this song first, but I didn't connect it to her until later, when "Fading Like a Flower" was big here in the U.S. in late September that same year. In November, I heard "Spending My Time", and a few months later, in February, "Listen to Your Heart". For my eleventh birthday, I told my mom I wanted their album. I mentioned several songs, and only years later did it occur to me that Mom might not remember all of them. but she's good like that, and Joyride entered my world. The rest, as they say, is history. She's the reason I've wanted to sing ever since. She was the first and only person whose voice could all but bring me to my knees. It did make me cry more than once, and her passing devistates me in ways I can't put into words. I found out last Tuesday on my way home from seeing a couple friends, and I put my hoodie up over my face and cried. I think I'm in the denial stage, the "this can't be real, she's really gone?" stage. I hate this, and I wish it had been different. No cancer... My own belief is that things happen for a reason, but I can't reconcile this one. The good ones are always taken from us, it seems. From an analytical perspective: what do you think of the raspy/strained sound to her voice? Do you think it's intentional, or a product of overusing her voice and/or being on tour? There are only a few times I heard it in this recording, which is fascinating to me, since I hear more of it on their albums than in most live recordings. What do you think of the voice breaking mid-vowel or mid-word? I know it's intentional, but I've never heard anyone do it quite like Marie. Have you? Thank you, Beth...so much. You have a new subscriber now. Your sensitivity to her life, and her music, is beautiful, and it did my heart good to watch this.

We would ride a round in limos like he was a real rockstar. Being the rocker he was, they were all rock n roll. With the exception of having me come on stage to sing "The Three Little Bears" lol. They see always so much fun. He would have people trying to climb on the stage and everything. I was just starting to walk and I would walk accross the stage and throw carnations into the audience with my dad. Whenever I listen to "The Look" it reminds me of that. Marie Fredriksson was so beloved world wide, that's why it's such a big loss to music. I was a huge fan in my teens and I had the chance to see Roxette live in 1995 and she had this way to get to the crowd, so much energy and passion. Her solo work is all impressive. She will be missed!

I have seen her live solo or with Roxette countless times, and everytime she blew me away, even when she was already quite sick before she stopped touring in 2016. Goosebumps and tears everytime, she did have the technique, but most importantly that feeling and emotion. It (still) crushes me everytime I realise I will not see her live again and that now only those videos remain. She was unique, her voice was unique and she was such a nice person towards her fans. Forever in my heart. Thanks for this video.

She was amazing. I have always kept many of their songs in my rotation. The way she builds to the big chorus, and just NAILS it. (Referencing studio version specifically, but also this) Rest in power.

She had such a gorgeous tone. Even after recovering to an extent from brain tumor she still possessed the same beautiful voice, less power of course, but stunning nonetheless. Such a shame she's gone.

Lovely reaction to one of Marie's greatest songs - right up there with Sparvöga. I'm a sucker for songs about heartache and this is one of the best.

This was one of the saddest weeks ever (I think I didnt felt like this since we lost David Bowie) I'm from Argentina and when I was like 7 or 8, Roxette was everywhere on the radios, so I guess it was my first favourite band ever and I still love it (I have plenty of their songs on my Spotify playlist so I still listen to them every other day and I know every lyric by heart) So I couldn't help my tears during this video. I've been watching you Beth for some months now, and this is the first time I really needed to leave you a comment. You have quite an exquisite channel here, keep up the good work. P.S. Since I finally dared to leave you a comment I don't want to miss this opportunity to tell you (even when I hate this kind of comments when I read them myself) that you looks like Amy Adam's prettier sister. You're not only stunning but talented and actually really funny, and with such a good musical taste. This channel it's an absolutely Gem ♥. I hope one day you make a video about my all time favourite female musician: Tori Amos. Greetings from Argentina!

Thank you for doing this one. I´ve still got all her soloalbums at home and still plays them. She was a very skilled composer as well. She wrote very poetic lyrics. Those songs were in Swedish so I guess people outside of Sweden wouldn´t apreciate them in the same way as I do. I miss this little songbird but her songs will remain. I´m sorry if my English isn´t the best in writing but I am Swedeish.

I love her music, Swedish and English. I don't know Swedish--I wish I did--but just listening to her is breathtaking. Your English is fine. :) i also wish the book written about her was translated into English... :( It's sad how the English-speaking fans can't read it, or really understand the beauty of her lyric-writing. I wish I could. Her music is so beautiful.

Here is some trivia on how Roxette really became well known, at least well known in the US and as a result became well known in other parts of the world. Dean Cushman is a US citizen who was studying in Sweden in 1988. The pop duo hadn't managed to break into the U.S. market. But The Look was playing everywhere in their home country. Cushman liked the tune so much, he brought a CD home with him to Minnesota. He soon went from playing the band's music to promoting them. "I loved the song ... So did all my friends in Sweden. It was the popular song and it's a catchy tune, I decided that if I liked it, maybe some of my friends would like it, maybe some of the Minnesotans would like it." He took the CD down to the local radio station and urged them to take a listen. Someone there did, and put in on the air. In no time, it was playing all over the U.S. and, eventually, it became a number one hit. www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/how-a-minnesota-man-brought-roxette-to-the-u-s-with-a-single-cd-1.5392615
