Gerry Rafferty wrote this song to describe what it’s like to be brought into the big business of music. The inspiration for the song comes from one time the band attended a signing party at a London restaurant; he described the scene as being like the Last Supper, with everyone worshiping the words of wisdom from the record label’s chief executive, and he was just sitting there, stuck in the middle with his band-mate. By the way, Gerry Rafferty produced the Proclaimers who you played the other day.

In his obituary of Rafferty for the January 5, 2011 issue of the Daily Telegraph, Martin Chilton said of this song that it was "Written as a parody of Bob Dylan's paranoia, it ridiculed a music industry cocktail party, with the lyrics: Clowns to the left of me jokers to the right here I am, stuck in the middle with you To Rafferty's utter disbelief his parody, composed as little more than a joke but with a catchy pop arrangement, struck gold, selling more than a million copies.

If you've never snacked acid then this song might not make sense. As a veteran of many acid trips this song perfectly sums up the feeling of being too scared to go down stairs (or in my case, on one particular trip, too scared to cross the road) and the 30 minutes of uncontrollable laughter usually about 10 minutes into the trip. That feeling that you just want the trip to stop

Lex has a fever that can only be cured by a stand-alone COWBELL. ha ha. This was old-school cool. If you like this I'd recommend Steve Miller Band "The Joker", "Jungle Love" and ARC Angels "Living in a Dream", "Sent by Angels", "Doin' Pretty Good for the Shape I'm In", and "Too Many Ways to Fall". AA is a part of SRV's old band and they age like a good wine.

Guys, Gerry Rafferty’s song “Get it Right next Time”, (just Love the sax in it as much as “Baker Street”) and one of his songs “No One has reacted to”.

Lex gets it. Vibe. I think I was very young when this came out, not even a teen yet. It was on the radio a LOT. Such a GREAT vibe. Thanks for sharing. You guys always make my day.

This is one of those songs where I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard it in 1973. Top top top tune.

Another one of my thousands of favorite songs. Oh the memories. Most guys couldn't dance to this so we dance with the girls. So much fun.

Izzy Stradlin has a pretty good acoustic cover of this song that he made and posted up from his house. Izzy was one of the founding members of Guns n' Roses.
