Wordplay Rap is when you use numerous meanings of the word to play with the words and create your lines. Playing with the meanings of words will give amusement and reaction to a listener that understands your wordplay when you do it correctly.
This is how to rap wordplay properly and understand what wordplay rap is.
BASIC WORDPLAY IN RAP:
Run shit like Diarrhea - 2 Chainz
Explain it
“Real Gs move in silence like lasagna” - Lil Wayne, “6 Foot, 7 Foot” (2011)
Simple play here: The letter "g" is in the word “lasagna.” The “G” will always remain silent no matter how many times you try to pronounce it. Hustlas (aka “G’s”), like Lil Wayne, know how to remain in silence about their moves.

How To Do Wordplay Rap
Wordplay in rap is really all about playing with the meaning of words
This is how you can start learning to use wordplay in your raps
1. Think of a word or a phrase. Like… “Run It”
2. Think of as many meanings to this word as you can.
So now we think, what runs?
A jogger, a race, diarrhea as we saw before in 2 Chainz example
Chris Brown has a song called run it.
Faucets run water, running shoes.
3. Now think of lyrics and ideas and brings at least two of the meanings together
I thought about Run it and how someone couldn’t run it if their calf was pulled or their leg was broken. Since you obviously can’t run if your leg is broke.
Then I thought about what you run. Well, you run a business right?
My business, I run it, but someone else can’t is what I think. So now we need to put all this together.
I added more wordplay into the first bar just to give you a little more. I came up with:
I molded a business and now I got Play Dough
I’d hand it over and you couldn’t run it like your leg broke
Play dough can be molded and shaped, just like a business can. I molded a business and now it gave me play dough. Dough is considered bread which is slang for money.
Because I molded a business like play dough I now have money to play around with.
And I’d give you the business but you couldn’t run it properly anyways.
You can run if your leg is broke. You’d run it very poorly and barely run it at all without it being painful.
Isn’t it crazy how saying 2 bars like that will mean so much and take so much to explain. But that’s the power of rap wordplay.
