I was at The Who show at Rich Stadium in Buffalo back in 1989 and when The Who started playing Love Reign O'er Me it started to rain. Not a drop before. Afterwards, singer Roger Daltrey said to the crowd "Let's see the Stones top that."

In the record and movie Quadrophenia, this is the climactic song; Jimmy, the hero of the story, has discovered that everything he believed in is false, he's been totally betrayed by the stuff he's based his entire personality on. So picture an young man who's realized how sold out he's been, standing on the ledge, deciding whether to throw himself off or not. And when Roger Daltrey sings the final "LOVE!" you can decide for yourself what Jimmy decided to do.

@loosilu
@loosilu 2 года назад
Brad, in terms of connecting with the song, it makes more sense in the context of the album, which is a rock opera. This song comes at the very end, and it is the resolution of all of the tensions that have been driving the story. I think the song is actually directed at God. Townshend wrote a number of love songs that were about the search for God, that can also be interpreted as loving another person. Like many great works of art, it can mean different things to different people. I thoroughly enjoyed this reaction!

I never experienced that either, and, despite it all, I felt absolutely connected with the song the first time I listened to it. I think it has more to do with LACK OF MUSICAL SENSIBILITY. Period!

Roger Daltrey sings this with *passion*. This is the concluding track on their "Quadraphenia" album, which is basically a Rock opera. Lex gets the gold star for getting the dual motifs. The character in the story is having a catharsis; he wants to be subject to love ("reign" over him), and wants it to renew/refresh him ("Oh God I need a drink of cool, cool rain"). An epic finish to an epic album! 💯🔥

One of my favorite Who songs. Lex had most of what it means to me. Simplified, after a tough day, its who you go home to that makes everything all right. Its that person who gets you, unconditionally, together, you are not alone, you're a team. They wash away every stupid, screwed up moment of the day and make it easier to deal with just by being there. Money is great and makes life better in some ways, but love makes even the crappiest of situations withstandable. "LOVE Rein O'er Me" what a precious and grateful thought.

In this episode of Brad & Lex, luscious keys and rain saturate the atmosphere awaiting dashing strings and hi hats leading to lead singer Roger Daltrey in all his bravado followed by kicks, drumrolls and snares that engulf and evaporate all rainfall ironically yet allowing hope for more downpour. The monstrous sound shows no mercy to Brad as he becomes helpless kin to a palm tree in forceful wind "swaying" from side to side, apart yet so close to Lex whom at that moment unleashes her "rainmaker bop" along with "sorcery fingers". She will share her thoughts on the experience peacefully of the "artistic stuff" and continue to produce various "bops" and "sways" with spirit finger highlights, "push pulls", a few "oohs", and "cross snaps". "Bradbot" takes full accountability for his inability to express emotion.

I have seen this song performed by The Who live twice in recent years with an orchestra. Both times was the closest I have come to crying at a rock concert. I have heard the song so many times recorded, but never live. I consider hearing once live with an orchestra a bucket list item I never thought I would experience. Twice was even better. In another reaction video for this song they have a better version of the lyrics. The lyrics actually switch back and forth between reign and rain and between O’er and on in some surprising places (in the chorus) as Lex mentions.

I've always seen 'Reign O'er Me' chorus as a plea to to have Love take over him. Reign can mean command, so he's asking for love to rule his life. Someone without love but longing for it might wish that on themselves. He's desperate. The rain vs reign aspect is just Pete Townsend's lyrical genius showing through. His songs have always been some of the most carefully crafted in rock, often taking him many months to write.

Good afternoon, Brad & Lex! I hadn't heard this song in a long time and I forgot how much I love it. Everything about it...Roger's powerful singing, Keith's pounding drums and the change in feel in the different sections...just kicks a$$!

I forgot to mention...Lex's big grin, swaying back and forth and "couch conducting" with her hand put a huge smile on my face.

This is the very definition of a Lex song. Sorry Brad but Lex is like me and people like us were instantly connected to this song for life from the very first listen. No explanation was ever needed because this song was our heart and soul on display in full effect.

The r&b and blues singer Betty LaVette did an amazing interpretation of this song when the Kennedy Center in Washington DC honored Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. Babra Streisand was also honored that night and could be seen turning to Pete asking if he wrote the song, and telling him it was fantastic...

Always liked this song. The only time I seen the Who was their "farewell" tour in the late 80's at Alpine Valley. We had lawn seats. When this song came on, it started to drizzle which seemed epic at that time. From that time on, I just loved this song.

You've done two of the three greatest Who songs now: this one and "Won't Get Fooled Again". The third is "Eminence Front", the grooviest Who song ever. If "Eminence Front" won't get your foot tapping and your head bobbing you gotta be dead.

I expected Brad to notice the play on words and make the connection by the difference between 'rain' and 'reign'... the first being nurturing and refreshing - verses - while the later being ruled - chorus. Lex picked up on it just listening to the music. That aside, the piano and drums throughout the song create the ambiance of the phases in a storm - i.e. that thundering sound in the intro is piano and drums.

Lucky for Brad the song is a part of the Quadrophenia rock opera, (like a musical,) which has a film you can watch, and so you can see the scenes the song is paired with! BTW, “o’er” is “over” with the v removed. In poetry, in particular, you can use the ‘ to take the place of a letter in a word and it often changes your syllable count: o-ver = 2 syllables; o’er = 1 syllable.

The key to the song is the word Reign. Sure, it's a homonym for rain, and leads to much of the imagery in the song, but as it is spelled it means to rule over. The persona in the song is reaching out to Love in the abstract to take control of his life.
