When Eric Burdon joined WAR it was a very good day. He brought his distinctive voice and delivery to one of the best groups of musicians on the whole planet, and made a perfect union of music and artistic interpretation. As they say, It's all good.

A different channel had an interview with the lead singer and drummer. The Latin groove was inspired by the “rhythmic” way Jimmy Hendrix’ lady friend Carmen Borello walked (I may have spelled the name wrong). Apparently the band was on a lunch break in the studio. Eric, the lead singer, was lying on his back on the floor of the studio having a “smoke” without cigarettes (wink). The guitar player said “What do you think of this groove” and played it. Eric started doing a stream of consciousness rap. The sound engineer came over, stuck a mic in his face and said “do it again”. The spill the wine apparently came from one of the band members spilling a bottle of wine earlier. The lyrics have a lot of sexual overtones. For example the bit about him standing on a mountain top naked to the world surrounded by every kind of girl. Plus the main line “Spill the wine, take that pearl”. The girl speaking Spanish was Eric’s girlfriend. They were in a tent they had on set and he kept prompting her to say things. In some live performances he talks about laying back in a field of tall Mexican grass, which was a call back to him lying in the studio floor. So yea, a drug induced stream of consciousness psychedelic song about sex and drugs that hit #3 on the Billboard top 100 in August 1970. Gotta love the 70s.

The memory I have of first listening to this song I will never forget. I was around 11 years old in 1970. My parents were like 35 years old. They took the family camping along with family friends of my Dad of where he worked. The camp ground had a lodge. Outside of the lodge was a huge deck sitting under a very shady tree and there sat a junk box. This song began to play and all of our parents went out onto the wood deck and started dancing. All of us kids sat on the floor deck looking up, listening to this song watching our parents dance away to Spill The Wine. I am 62 years old now and thank God I'm blessed my parents are still living. They are 85 and 84. Everytime I hear this song it never fails.....I think of them dancing under that tree.

The live version is even better! Plus Eric Burdon, performing in his prime! Years after his famous voice brought fame to his 60s group, The Animals (House of the rising sun, etc.) The 1970s era, video of this performed by the band "War" with Eric Burdon as a guest frontman. You'll see a drastic transformation from the way he presented himself in the 1960s in the Animals vintage videos. Young Bowl cut and suits, British look. Watch "spill the wine" performance on youtube. Check out the, older, wiser, cooler, hippied out and groovy. One of the legends of Rock n' Roll and recorded music history. Check him out performing with WAR. He's an O G, the original OG Rockstar. O G among the first people in the world to have become a Rockstar. An "Original Influencer" Spill The Wine!!!

Spill the Wine was released in May of 1970. The song was inspired by an accident in which keyboardist Lonnie Jordan spilled wine on a mixing board. The also features a prevalent flute solo, and the sound of a woman speaking Spanish-a friend of Eric Burdon. (Wikipedia)

I had heard that Spill the Wine Dig that Pearl was a reference to injecting heroin, the pearl being the heroin, the wine being the bit of blood from the injection. Either one is interesting
@supertrexandroidx
@supertrexandroidx Год назад
@@billdCT97 Pretty sure it's meant as a sexual reference, to the clitoris specifically. I know that War's drummer, Harold Brown, has talked about this song being mainly a celebration of women. Although the "spill the wine" part might have been influenced by one of the band members spilling some wine on a keyboard or something at the time they were recording it, according to Brown. The Spanish girl in the song was actually Burdon's girlfriend. Brown says they put up a tent, with candles and wine and whatever, and Eric was in there "doing things to her" to get her talking :)

Isn't the story behind this song about the band War and Eric Burdon getting together in a recording studio and one of the members spilled the wine on the recording equipment. They then needed to record something to pay for the damaged equipment. Burdon pulled out one of the songs he had been working on and substituted "Spill the Wine" for the original lyrics about leaky gnomes. Almost as strange as a song called Scrambled Eggs, before Paul McCartney changed the lyrics to Yesterday.

Not a well schooled WAR fan but I grew up listening to this song. I've NEVER understood it's meaning but I've have always liked it because It was so different than the "typical" radio play music of it's time. Great to hear you two react to it! Brad and Lex... love your reactions!

Spill the wine, Why can’t we be friends, Cisco kid and Low rider are all fine songs But they’re all just top 40 fun " funky " pop songs If you want to know War’s true Artistry in musicianship and songwriting You have to listen to their songs...... Slipping in to darkness, The World is a Ghetto and Me and Baby Brother These song moved the consciousness of Black America in the early 70’s Bands like War, Earth Wind and Fire and Artist like James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes provided the perfect soundtrack for the Black Power Movement in the late 60’s and early 70’s It was a great time to be alive especially as a young African American Our parents instilled in us a sense of pride in who we are And these great artists showed us through their Artistry just how great we could be despite the obstacles thrown in our way Do check these song out They’re part of our heritage and our contribution of American culture that is enjoyed and admired around the world I was recently in Milan Italy with my wife and heard through an open window of an apartment the beautiful sound of War’s Slipping in to darkness and it made my day!!!!!😌

This song always reminds me of 2 things: How bands can just play a 1 chord song and as long as the musicians know thier parts and don't play over each other, the results are GREAT. 2nd, how I got more girls during my 2 year self-exile in Mexico than I did my whole life--If you 're nice to them, can dance and speak Spanish, they're on ya like a loud suit!! !

So there’s a musical reference to In the Hall of the Mountain King, a classical musical composition by Grieg. I think most people have heard parts of it in passing, but it made me think: how cool would it be if Brad and Lex did a reaction to it, or to other pieces of iconic classical music. Maybe Bolero by Ravel or something from Holst’s The Planets (particularly Mars). Most of us have heard snatches of these songs without knowing the names of the songs, so there is a passing familiarity, but it could be rewarding if Brad and Alex sat down and gave the songs a close listen. And y’all should give these songs an attentive listen at least once all the way through. Give them a try. They might become part of your routine because they are pretty cool.

I just did a search, and here's what came up: The "Pearl" refers to the "Pearl of the Orient", which apparently was a slang term for heroin. The "Wine" is referring to the blood that drips when you shoot up heroin... so you're "spilling the wine" when you "take the pearl". I'd say that this is the most likely meaning for the song, and it also explains why he was "dreaming".
@weldonbailey1005
@weldonbailey1005 Год назад
Total bs. Pearl reference here is not about heroin. Pearl is a sexual reference to her clit plain and simple. Not too many junkies can shoot up and have sex dude. She is asking for oral. He might be tripping too but it would have been on LSD or shrooms, not heroin. When u search, it doesnt take into account what decade u r referring to either. Just listen to the song man, its not overly complicated.

It was fairly common in the late 1960s & early 1970s era songs to have a lot of talking. Singers like Barry White, Bobby Womack, Joe Tex, & Isaac Hayes did that a lot. There's a song called "Be For Real" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes where Teddy Pendergrass talks for the first 4 minutes of a 7 and a half minute song.

It's description of a dream, so it's highly symbolic. He's brought to stand naked before representatives of all the women in the world, and a women from the middle (and therefore representative of all the women, all womenhood), says "Spill the wine, dig that girl! " He says he doesn't know what that means, and it's crazy ... There is a clue in the instrumentation, I think. The flute is prominent, and it's not a common instrument in rock and pop. It has associations with sex; it was the instrument of the god Pan. Pan is another name for Dionysus, the god of alcohol, sex, intoxication, and disorder. Wine is symbolic of good times, socialization, seduction and sex. "Spill" has connotations of wastage. Moralists would discourage young men not to "spill their seed", that is, not to waste it through sex with women they weren't married to or weren't going to marry. I'd say the dream is about women telling him to appreciate them and have sex with them and not worry about the moralists who say not to. This kind of thought was all over the place in late 60s and early 70s rock/pop. I gotta say, though, I'd much rather inhabit the dreamy, seductive, allusive world of the song, than explain it!
