Hey there! I'm the fella that produced Aloe's version and I wanted to say thank you for the honest, transparent and thorough review. I also thought I'd share a little bit of insight into the process for covering this song and all the others that are coming. There is a rich history of soul/R&B artists covering rock songs. Check out Stevie Wonder covering "We Can Work it Out" by the Beatles or Aretha Franklin doing "Long and Winding Road" also by the Beatles. That tradition has been absent in soul music for quite some time and Aloe wanted to make a record like that. When we first started discussing the song ideas, we originally talked about classic songs of the 60s and 70s but then we thought "how about the 90s" which were the songs of our youth. Black Hole Sun was the very first song I thought would be such a great one to change up. I love that original recording so much that I wouldn't dare try to Recreate that feeling. But the idea is always how can we add to the timelessness of the original and create something new with little nods to the original. It's meant to be a new soulful/funk take on an old classic. Know what I mean? I also thought it would be something that Chris Cornell would dig, knowing what a music head he was and hearing him cover Prince and other artists from the funk/soul world. Really happy people are digging it. ❤☀️

First off, thank you so much for checking out our video. Second, we really, really appreciate all the information regarding the background and conception of Aloe's new record. If you have some time and would be willing to talk about it more, we also produce a television show for Austin Music TV, and I'd LOVE an opportunity to have a discussion with you via zoom that we would air on the TV show and as well as here on RU-vid regarding this project and your involvement. If that sounds like something that could be fun/interesting, you can find us on FB and shoot us a message: facebook.com/likemindedlunatics?mibextid=ZbWKwL Thank you again.

Both are terrifying in their own right. In the 90s, the response to existential angst was a scream - powerful and loud. We saw the world through the lens of the 80s garish excess. These days, the veneer is different. Beautiful music, smooth and seductive, selling a message of today’s existential angst. I love both versions and lean towards the OG.

The line from my generation that gets me in the feels is from Bowie’s Young Americans: Isn’t there one damn song that can make me break down and cry?

I do like how the cover gets increasingly hard and more chaotic as it progresses.

Hi Mark , thank you for this Comparison. I like both versions very much. I agree on your analysis. The Original is a classic, a masterpiece by Chris Cornell and everything is said about it 🥰 The cover by Aloe Blacc as a piece of art on its own like you defined it is beautiful (thanx for the term intentional fallacy - I didn't know the english word for it, but it's something I told people to avoid for years 😉 the intent of the author is not important - he has said everything in his art). The arrangement is very fresh and the guitar work is brilliant. I love the singing very much. This cover does justice to the Original and I like it. It is a successful addition to the Soul/R&B-tradition as explained by OtisMacMusic in his comment. Thank you all! Greetings, Klaus

Yeah, this was a really interesting cover. Honestly, I'm still kind of processing it. The most I hear it, the more I like it, which I think, is an indication of the complexity of the new arrangement and take on the original.

Aloe's version is a bit fast. Im ok with it being a little faster, and him making it his own. But yeah, the speed he is saying it just not very natural.

While I appreciate the cover bringing the song to a whole new audience, the sped up, r&b version is not for me.
