The few that always stood out to are 1. Disposable Heroes. It’s such a masterfully composed solo with so many peaks and valleys. Every time I hear it I never want it to end. 2. The Struggle Within. Arranged so well, serves the song beautifully, and clever use of pentatonic scale. 3. I totally agree with Shortest Straw. I really miss the days when Kirk challenged himself to compose quality solos. On those first 5 albums you can tell he took time and effort to acquire the skills and apply them to his art. But unfortunately for the last few Metallica albums, it sounds like he’s gotten lazy and is just laying down sloppy wah wah nonsense. Great video Rob 🤘🏻

Agreed. Regardless of how much he wants to be a SRV-style improviser, he's never going to be that type of player. All of his best solos were carefully composed, not off-the-cuff improvs. I wish he'd get back to doing what he does well instead of just phoning it in with a bunch of lazy pentatonic licks hidden underneath the wah.

Hot take: One of my favorite Metallica solos is actually from Hetfield. The short 15 second solo on The Thorn Within. It's nothing crazy. It's simple and easy, but has a lot of feeling and fits the song perfectly. I love it.

Hard agree on shorest straw solo. Definitely my top kirk solo. Its so awesome, and the rythm guitar kicks so much ass. A lot of pantera actually always reminds me of the shortest staraw

When i first got the justice album I always thought shortest straw was metallicas version of ace of spades. Always loved that solo as it was so different to all his other stuff from the era.

That’s a great list sir, love your choices. Kirk was certainly at his peak on ‘And justice for All’, all the solos on that record kick major ass. One of my personal favourites which never seems to get mentioned is the solo to ‘Struggle Within’. Makes me pull all ‘the faces’ when I hear it, such a bad ass solo. Love the song too, very underrated in my opinion - what a way to close an album. 🤘🏻💀🤘🏻

Great video as always, my friend. Agree with your take here. Separately, and I actually think Mark said this, but while Justice might not be their “best” album (Lightning or Master for me), the sound is tops. Never duplicated. Haunting. I think it has an almost garage band-ish vibe / sound to it that’s so genuine. My mind thinks about them jamming in the “One” video. Thanks for sharing, Rob!

Fade to black solo as to be my favourite. The seek and destroy solo is amazing. Battery solo love that. Of wolf and man solo now that is a beauty. And from the justice album harvester of sorrow. Maaan! The first three picks are also among my top 5 favourites! The Shortest Straw is one of the coolest on Justice IMO too, not only because of the techniques like you said but also from a scale standpoint 😉 he's channeling quite a bit of his guitar influences and that makes the solo all the more interesting! The Thing That Should Not Be... boy oh boy, one of my favourite songs on Master (being a Lovecraft fan too), so menacing and heavy and that short but aggressive Phrygian Dominant solo is really something else! ...And Justice For All solo is also a favourite of mine as is the whole song! Very long and with plenty of parts and key changes but so effective! Great pick with the second Sad But True lead break, didn't see that coming but it's undeniably a cool solo, very underrated! To Live Is To Die is also very underrated, and I remember seeing your cover almost a year ago... awesome rendition!

Stellar list Rob! The Shortest Straw solo is so cool and unique, I see why it’s your favorite! The Thing that Should Not Be solo is a sleeper, because most people are so focused on the heavy riffage (for good reason, I think it may be the first low tuned metal song too). When I was in my mid to late teens Metallica just had come out, and that was the baddest of the bad back in the day. And then Slayer came out and set the volume a and then Slayer came out and set the ball a little higher. But back in those days the best of the best were Metallica and Slayer. Ulrich and Lombardo we're the best drummers back in those days. Kirk hammett, Jeff hanneman, Kerry King we're definitely the best of the best. Kids these days that hate on them just have no idea.

Justice is their best song and album. The fretwork on that song is so extensive. They basically use the whole neck. And then that solo, 🔥🔥🔥. I definitely expected The Unforgiven, especially for The Black Album. I loved that video for To Live is to Die. Im pretty sure that was my first exposure to you.

My favorite Metallica solo will always be the Unforgiven. Proves that you don't need to be overly technical to make something amazing. I think Kirk gets a lot of crap because he seems more of a blues guitarist at heart, but he is more versatile than people think.

I know it's already been mentioned a couple times in here, but the Struggle Within solo is just SO DAMN GOOD! It really does get overlooked for how much of a banger it is. It's not dark or evil, but it's almost "athletic" sounding in a way. If that makes sense? For Megadeth, you're gonna have to do a Top 20 lol

Real talk here: I really love that attitude you had during the To Live is To Die section. We can still be respectful of Kirk while being critical and honest. The man is totally giving up trying to be a Guitar God and like you said, really has been phoning it in at modern day Metallica shows. However the man is in his 60's now and has put his time him crafting some truly stellar solos so he has nothing to prove to anyone. Bottom line: it's great to see someone tell it like it is without being a d-bag.

Hey I appreciate that man, and it's good to hear reinforcement on the subject from other like-minded dudes. 👊 And I totally hear what you're saying about the guys being in their 60's, and having nothing to prove. Ever since St. Anger hit, all of that really became apparent for me. Of course all of us would still love to hear that youthful and alcoholic energy they brought on their earlier albums, but now they're multimillionaires with families and children, and they've literally done it all. So it's hard to expect them to make music like they used to with that same hunger and passion. Regardless, we'll always have that early music to enjoy, and to many of us, they'll always be the GOATS. 🤘

Even though i am sick to death of Enter Sandman that solo still rips. Peeps love to hate on Kirk but can you imagine Metallica music without his leads? Plus he's contributed a lot of killer riffs over the years as well.

By pure chance, I saw Metallica in an oddball one off small nightclub gig (less than 1000) when they were just an opening act, touring for “Ride the lightning”. They were so hungry and raw, and to have seen Cliff tearing it up….. Best $13 I’ve ever spent!🤘🏻

Totally agree on the improv shit, Matt from trivium does that a lot these days with his solos from older songs instead of going back and learning them properly and it drives me insane, specially when they turn out meh. Gotta keep the ego in check brothas, iconic songs are iconic for a reason! Play the damn song right!

Trapped Under Ice is a great one! Gun to my head, I'd have to say The Shortest Straw is probably my favorite Metallica tune! Then To Live is To Die, AJFA, Harvester Of Sorrow. The Justice album IS my favorite album of ALL time!
