Hi and thanks for joining us at Merriam Pianos on RU-vid. Next up is episode 3 in our new series of FAQ videos on the most popular questions asked regarding specific models of pianos as we explore the Casio PX-S1100.
Please like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell!
FAQ #1: Does the Casio PX-S1100 Have Weighted Keys?
It most certainly does - the S1100 uses Casio’s Smart Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard. This is a compact action due to how slim the case of the S1100 is, but it’s still going to be a great feeling action for many people.
It’s well built and we haven’t seen many warranty claims regarding the action.
FAQ #2: Does the Casio PX-S1100 Have a Music Stand?
The answer here is yes - the S1100 includes a music rest in the box at no extra charge.
FAQ #3: Does the Casio PX-S1100 Have MIDI?
Yes, and there are two ways to transmit MIDI information from devices. The first is with a cable via the USB port, and the second is via Bluetooth MIDI courtesy of the Bluetooth adapter that comes with the S1100.
FAQ #4: Can you Record on the Casio PX-S1100?
Yes, the S1100 has an onboard recorder, though it’s fairly limited. We would recommend using a computer or mobile device for most of your recording.
FAQ #5: Does the Casio PX-S1100 Have Bluetooth?
Casio includes a complimentary Bluetooth adapter which plugs into the back of the keyboard which provides you with both Bluetooth MIDI and Audio.
FAQ #6: What is the Newest Casio Privia Model?
In the PXS series, that would be both the PX-S1100 and PX-S3100.
FAQ #7: Can you use the Casio PX-S1100 as a MIDI controller?
As long as a digital piano has a USB MIDI port it can pretty much certainly be used as a MIDI controller. The S1100 definitely has this.
FAQ #8: How do you connect your Bluetooth Headphones to a PX-S1100?
Unfortunately, you can’t, nor can you connect Bluetooth headphones to any digital piano at the point in time of this video. There’s a lag issue with outbound Bluetooth Audio information that hasn’t yet been solved, so currently, no manufacturer is offering a digital piano with an outbound Bluetooth Audio connection.
FAQ #9: What is the Chordana App?
The Chordana App is a free companion app from Casio built to accompany many of their digital pianos, and frankly, it happens to be one of the best on the market from any manufacturer.
This app offers the user intuitive, streamlined remote control of the instrument, and it also happens to be very visually appealing. There are also a number of killer features in the app for musicians of all levels.
FAQ #10: Where are Casio Pianos Made?
Casio pianos are designed in Japan and manufactured in China. Nowadays, all digital pianos are built in Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia or China.
FAQ #11: Which Casio Keyboard is Best for Beginners?
Casio has a huge range of fewer than 88-note keyboards and semi-weighted 88-note keyboards. It of course depends on the person, but for people getting into piano lessons and hoping to develop technique to one day play an acoustic piano, starting out with an 88-note weighted digital action, like the PX-S1100, is very important.
Casio’s PX-770 and PX-870 are very solid options as well, but if you’re looking for something portable and affordable, the PX-S1100 is a very good option.

This is an update to my earlier comments. I tried the PX-S1100 briefly during an unscheduled visit to a music store in Germany, recently. The main piano sound is excellent. The action is fast and responsive, but I do have two small reservations about it and they are largely subjective. First up: The keystrokes feel a bit short, even compared to a typical Yamaha portable piano, and very short compared to say, Roland actions. I'm guessing that this needn't be a problem for most players. 2nd: The action guided me to the centres of the keys. I didn't feel quite as free as say on the Yamahas I have owned. I still prefer it to the Yamaha GHS action, which is too slow for me. This Casio piano is one of the most compact and light-weight pianos you can get that features speakers and a graded hammer action. It can work with batteries, and it still hold its own against other 2nd tier portable pianos. It's not a suitable principle instrument for say a full-time modern music pianist, but it can be a great deal for open-minded pianists with humbler ambitions.
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 2 года назад
Thanks for the insights Mike! Deciding on a piano both in terms of sound and touch is very personal and subjective. But, as you pointed out, other factors like portability and the option of running on batteries can be attractive features for certain users. Thanks again and all the best!

Chordana is great for me, specially on the learning side, but it was replaced for "Casio Music Space" that looks nicer and add some other things, requires a more powerful device to running correctly, but have many improvements related to Chordana. Maybe you need to include this new app on future videos about Casio products Stu!

One feature Casio apps don't seem to have is the ability to analyze a song, extract its chords automatically, then provide you with an accompaniment style that you can play along with. Yamaha apps can do that while showing the sheet music as well.

It's worth adding that full MIDI controlers have legacy connectors too, so you can control other (full) MIDI compatible hardware. This was the norm long before DAWS were invented. I'm sad that one of my keyboards hasn't got legacy connectors. This isolates it from my other pianos/keyboards because you can't connect two instruments via USB unless there's a computer in the middle. Happily, some of the voice expander modules will accept control via USB. But controlling expansion modules and DAW software can be frustrating if you haven't got fine touch sensor control options and memory banks to call up hidden patches. I even recall severe touch setting problems using two Yamaha products many years ago. You'd think that manufacturers would make compatible products, but no. I agree about weighted actions for serious piano students, but I cannot agree with the industry insistence on 88 keys for beginners. It's true that 61 and fewer is a bit mean, but many students and experienced pianists would be happier with a 73-key piano because of space, cost and weight considerations. Many of the greatest classical composers and pianists used pianos with fewer than 88 keys, and I know of no mainstream piano exam that requires 88. I have an 88-key portable DP with a weighted action, and it's fine for practice, but it's too big and heavy for some gigs even though it's only 17kg. I cringe when I see first time buyers with unweighted 88-key "pianos". What a waste! I bought the only semi-weighted 73-key piano that I could find for going on vacation with. It's with me now. Weighs about 6 kilos. My next stage piano will have 73 keys. That's enough for most band work.
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 2 года назад
Thank you kindly for those incredibly thorough and comprehensive additions! I definitely agree with the notion that having a weighted keyboard of less than 88 keys is far better for the student than a full 88 key keyboard with an unweighted action. Furthermore, the portability and size of 61 and 73 key instruments are required for specific applications (touring/gigging or having a piano set up on a work desk for recording/production). :)

If your Midi controller doesn't have proper MIDI DIN connectors but only USB, you can always add a MIDI host between your devices. It will set you back about 100 EUR/$. Bands in the old days used to bring Hammon B-3's - almost 200 kg. 17 kg is not much more than my old Roland SH-1000 monophonic synthesizer.
@Zoco101
@Zoco101 Год назад
@@fuglbird thanks. That's very interesting about the MIDI controller. It's true that keyboards are much lighter today, but for some of us they seriously need to be so we can travel alone and get from the offloading area to the site, maybe crossing lawns, steps and so on. I can still carry my piano bag with 17kg in it, but I'm not getting any younger, and I'm a little concerned for my knees, what with the weight all being on one side. And while it's already tricky fitting an 88 into a hatchback car, we should remember that future private transport could be typically more diminutive.

I wonder when Casio plans to upgrade the PX-S3100 sound engine. It has the AiR sound source, which does not sound nearly as good as the new AiX sound source. So, you get 700 sounds from the old AiR sound engine... I hope the next PX-S3200 comes with the AiX sound source, like those new CT-S models (CT-S410/500/1000V).

Hi! Brent here! The PXS1100 includes a Bluetooth dongle, which allows you to access wireless Bluetooth MIDI and audio. However, recording the audio onto a device/laptop is achieved on the Roland FP30X via a USB audio interface. That is something that not all digital piano manufacturers offer at this time, so, if that is an important consideration, Roland is definitely a difficult instrument to beat. Also, thank you so much for the support and sub! We appreciate it immensely. :)

I've asked about the texture on the keys. I'm wondering now about the need for an app to get the most out of the piano since there is no screen on the piano to show the settings. It's been suggested by other reviewers that there's a risk involved with needing an app because sometimes the apps aren't as good as the keyboards, and the buyer has no assurance that over the coming years the manufacturer won't stop supporting the app. How important is this?
@MerriamPianos

The PXS1100 is quite easy to navigate in my experiences. With that said, Casio's Music Space app definitely makes things even easier and more accessible. Please allow me to ask a little question: can you use the audio playback of Chordana through the USB to host cable connection, to spare the USB to device port for audio recording? And in this case, will the sound coming from Chordana be recorded together what you play on the keyboard? Or the audio function in Chordana will work only if you connect through Bluetooth - so wasting the USB to device for the dongle?
@Instrumental-Covers
@Instrumental-Covers 2 года назад
I am trying to understand your question. In my Yamaha DGX-670, which has Bluetooth Audio (and also a built-in Audio Interface), you can send audio from any Bluetooth device (like your phone or computer) to the digital piano to play through its built-in speaker system, then play along with the song, then record the entire mix as uncompressed audio (.wav file) in a USB flash driver using the USB port. You can also, if you want, record only what you play (Audio Loopback: on/off). You don't need to use any USB cable for this operation. Are you trying to do something similar in the PX-S1100?

One unusual feature of the PX-S1100 is its speaker system. It has a pair of large oval speakers on the back with no dedicated enclosure (meaning, no speaker box, just placed inside the piano). No current Yamaha, Kawai, or Roland places the speakers on the back of the piano. The typical location is under the piano or on top. Yamaha used to have a similar configuration (speaker on the back) in the now discontinued P255, but it also had tweeters on top to produce the nuances of the tone (which the PX-S1100 lacks). Casio labels the PX-S1100 as a "stage piano", which I find interesting, because this model is typically compared with pianos that Yamaha, Kawai, and Roland label as "portable pianos". The label "stage piano" is typically associated with professional pianos such as Yamaha CP88, Kawai MP7SE/11SE, or Roland RD2000.

Instrumental Covers: Some other Casio models use the outward facing speaker too. I was jamming at a jazz festival three days ago on somebody's PX-560, or a similar model number, you know, the indigo-coloured piano. We all had to play quietly because of other jams nearby. It worked well, and gave me a better impression than when I tried one in a showroom about six years ago. In a cosy setting, the outward facing speakers were fine, but they would be worse than useless on a big stage. As you know, I have a Yamaha P-255, and I'm delighted with the reflected sound in my studio and in restaurants, but sometimes the speakers confuse the sound on a big stage, instead of handling the more urgent task of clear monitoring. So for this reason and others (such as too few handy controls) I agree that the term "stage piano" is a bit exaggerated for models like the PX-S1100. Many retailers, however, refuse to make a distinction anyway. I do like the categories that Stu created in another video.

Neither one, but Roland is said to have a good action whereas the Casio action is compromised for classical practice. The Casio might have a more pleasant, delicate piano tone than Roland, which is also desirable in classical music. But Stu said, "A piano teacher is going to care more about the feel of the instrument than almost any other feature on there" (excerpt from his video of the Yamaha P125 vs Roland FP10). You have to be very careful when playing softly because notes will eather play slitely louder than expected or not at all making it unpredictable to play this comvined with the fact that the PHA 4 is a heavy action so you really need to be very careful with your dynamics🎹🎶

@@illusionyx907 Hello, I am glad it helped. But as M-B-E430 mentioned, there are other good choices from Yamaha and Kawai in this price category, namely the P125 and ES120 (coming soon). I personally would skip Casio and Roland, and go for either Yamaha or Kawai. Those are actual acoustic piano companies and they can match the piano tone and the action better than Roland or Casio, in my opinion. As M-B-E430 said, Roland tends to have a not-so-realistic dynamics. Many times they mention in this channel that Roland has good dynamics, but I have pointed out in other comments that it sounds unrealistic to me. If you sit in a real acoustic grand piano from Kawai or Yamaha, the dynamics are somehow different than what Roland does. Roland exaggerates the dynamics in my opinion, whereas Yamaha and Kawai are more closely matched to their acoustic pianos. So, all in all, I would suggest a Yamaha P125 or a Kawai ES120. The ES120 will probably feel lighter and less secure than the P125, which some people like. The GHS action from Yamaha feels more planted to me. That's more a matter of taste than one being better than the other, in my opinion. I used to have two Roland pianos, one of them with the PHA-4 action, and I really don't like it that much, it feels strange to me, like an old piano. But again, it is a matter of impressions. But regardless of what you buy, I think these 4 options have their strong and weak points, and they can all be pleasant to play.

I'm not sure if I fully understand what you are looking to configure. Are you using the PXS1100 as a controller for Ravenscroft 275 and then trying to take the stereo audio output and play it back through the speaker system of your Casio PXS1100? If so, there is a stereo mini AUDIO IN jack on the PXS1100.

@@MerriamPianos Sorry, maybe I’m not explaining it right because I’m not too tech savvy. lol. I’m trying to connect my ios Ravenscroft from my iPad to play the sound through the speakers of my Casio 1100. I have an ipad adapter that connects a usb printer cable from my ipad to the 1100. I then connect my 3.5mm cable from my ipad to where? Because if I plug it in the headphone jack at the front of the 1100 the sound of the Ravenscroft app doesn’t come through the piano speakers. I hope this makes sense. Sorry if I’m rattling your brain a bit. 😄 I have a Kawai CA79 and the ios Ravenscroft connects fine cause it has a dedicated stereo line out but the 1100 doesn’t. 🤷🏻

@@MerriamPianos I am about to purchase the 1100 and was wondering if that is how you get a VST piano from the laptop to play through the casio's speakers. Makes sense. Thanks. PS Here in the states at the end of 2023 the casio psx1100 is going for about $540. Perfect for an old retired person like me who never had the time to learn my way around the keys the way I wanted to. Love the pure sound of the piano. Great Videos you put out with lots of information. Stu, you have indeed became a trusted source. Not an easy thing to do in this day and time. Lots of Love from Alabama

Something that concerns me is that a review of an instrument fresh out-of-the-box or even a review of someone's experience playing an instrument for several months can never answer the question of how durable a particular digital keyboard is in normal use. I'm not going to name names, but I have paid attention. My buying choice will be informed by what others have reported.

Of course, it is impossible to anticipate the longevity of a new model until many months or years have passed. This is why there are recalls with certain manufacturing runs of cars for instance. With that said, companies like Casio have a well-established track record in recent years on producing highly-durable and reliable pianos. :)

@@MerriamPianos I have to say, with all of the research I have done, that I am impressed with what the manufacturers are producing at the entry level price point. A premium starter motor for a car can cost $250 or more and the digital keyboard industry is making and selling full feature keyboards you can play clubs with or work your way up to concert piano level on for $500 and $600 if you shop around. I say, a person has to carefully consider their purposes. My priority is acoustic piano emulation. Someone who wanted to play pop, rock or jazz would have a different priority and probably would choose a different instrument than I would.

@@MerriamPianos You did a video on this exact topic. The comments where individual people recount their experiences are quite instructive.

This piano got a black keys issue, why just one reviewer talk about it?

Casio divides their Privia models in two categories: console and stage. They label the PX-S1100 as a "stage piano"... and it comes with the so-called "smart" scaled hammer action, as opposed to the console pianos (like the PX-700BK), which comes with the "Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard Ⅱ" (no smart). I think their rationale is: we give you the world's slimmest digital piano to play "on the stage", but we needed to make "adjustments" to the action. They also give you a regular action in the form of a console piano. So, it seems they don't have the same rationale as Yamaha, Kawai, and Roland when it comes to portable pianos. In fact, they don't even use the word "portable " in their lineup. Yamaha, Kawai, and Roland give you portable pianos that are almost as lightweight as the PX-S1100 without the "adjustments" to the black keys. I guess it is a matter of priorities: slimmest (Casio) vs regular size lightweight portable (Yamaha, Kawai, Roland).

Stu discusses the "issue" you're referring to, without calling it "the black key issue", starting around 1:50 in the video...

I have extensively tested this DP. There is no black key issue if you play them where they should be played. If you play them too much “inside”, they are a quite heavy and if you play them at their very tip, they are indeed lighter than white ones

@@alessandrotesta63 that's OK If you just play popular music with basic chords, pretty easy to control where to play, but if you play classic music you gonna play in a lot of the parts of the black keys and definitely you will notice the issue.

And yeah, i already tried and it's clear to notice it. At the beginning (when I just saw the dude the talked about it) I was sure he was exaggerating with the detail, but when I played fast scales, chopin, etudes, etc, I realized that the issue is not a joke. Kind sad because the action in general terms its very good and I prefer the sound of this Casio px s1000 over any Yamaha or rolands of this range of prices.

No, but you can read them in .pdf format using the Chordana app. 😁

Maybe the next update to the PXS line will include that feature. ;)
