I just wanted to add my comment that I have recently bought this piano and I watched both this and the other video and I have to say the action to me is a non issue. This is a beautiful digital piano and from someone who is classically trained and wanted a digital piano that would emulate that acoustic feel this ticks all the boxes. There are so many options on this for things like touch response it even gives you things like the option of how much you want to hear the 'pedal' hitting the strings. There is no way I could get an acoustic piano that sounds this good without spending thousands which I don't have - I love this piano and the hundreds of options is just mindbending. Thanks for the review 😊

Everyone has different playing styles and different hands. Honestly, it's very subjective, so I would just say play one and see if it suits you. I also play guitar and I can also say that not every model works for me. As a Casio PX-5s owner, personally I like the feel over some Roland's and Yamaha's I've owned in the past. But It's really up to each individual.

Jack's beautiful playing illustrates that if you're the average player (whether gigging or at home) you should stop worrying about this keyboard or that keyboard. For most people, you need to buy a board, get it home, and just play! Most keyboards these days are so good! Stop the fuss!

Great. Exactly what's my point of view. So many ;;golden hands'' in the comment section . All like ''concert pianist'' level. Should have the £ to buy Fazioli than :)))). The truth , all digital pianos make great studying instruments. In the 90 s one would not dream at this to become a standard. Hammer action keys.

Miles Black (the guy who transcribed Oscar Peterson's solos for PG Music/Band In A Box), Michael Creber (was in KD Lang's band amongst other professional accomplishments), and noted composer/arranger/pianist Bill Sample are all digging their Casio's and no complaints about the action...

It sounds really good and thanks Jack for an excellent demo. With the expression pedal capability, and being able to control it from an iPad app, it's compelling as a stage keyboard. If they brought it out in 73 or 76 note form, it would be perfect.

I have a Casio CGP for plinking around on. I love the feel of the keybed, though I am a horrible amateur. The samples are usable, even if the effects are not. I’m sure a Nord Stage or Yamaha Montage would be a much better board/synth. But for about 500 bucks for the Casio vs 4000 for the others, it’ll do just fine for me. If I need better tones/patches/voices, I can use iPad, laptop or patch in my Juno DS or Reface DX. Someday I’ll have a nice keyboard that does it all, for a few grand. If I ever have a reason to get one.

Yea Jack!, James (PianoForever) knows his stuff, but I agree, he can be quite harsh on cheap & reasonably priced gear. If this action thing was an issue for my MP11SE or a Korg SV, then yes that's not good bro! But like u say, it's cheap as 88's go and so versatile! Great demo as usual dude, big up to u & the Falcon :) P.s check James (PianoForever) with new Moog, he ain't got a clue he's that classical LOL :)

@YouGleIt

I'n new to digital pianos and I found James' video (The one you refer to without naming or linking, because apparently "We don't talk about you know") very refreshing in a world of so much marketing and models, sales people dictating the lingo, etc. Obviously that guy from The Piano Forever did not make the argument that a Fiesta is what he's trying to expect more from. I'm glad to hear a legit critic who knows what he's talking about, just like when you hear frank speak in sports or other types of reviews not based on "X company sent me...". For the record, as most of us I think are smart consumers, I ended up purchasing a Casio, but not those models. I spent a lot of time watching a lot of reviews and reading specs, considering what we needed, portability, action, features, etc. The main issue with that whole fiasco was how he was vilified for simply having his backed up POV. If they treat him that way, imagine the rest of us. It's not a good move and they could have just said, that's what we did for these models, it seems like people like them, and we always take feedback from all types of players for our various product lines... and move on. But, they say they don't sacrifice and that they do, they can't argue against what he found so they try to say the test is bad (then show us the right tone) - like he said, if it's a feature, it's one he didn't like. I think that his take was that that particular issue with the weight of the black keys isn't one for any keyboards worth looking into. If this was on some brand he wouldn't even look at then that would be the Fiesta... I think he took the time and they should have too. Anyway, fun content! keep it up.

Jack, funny i have seen James reviews and yeah he seems to have a bee in his bonnet about Casio. I think they are getting better and better and a lot of it is perceived lack of quality due to Casio mostly doing entry level keys. I got my first keyboard CTX 700 from them first lockdown 2020-(in Australia) and its now my controller and i could easily busk or do a cafe gig with it. By the way you do the best demos because you play riffs appropriate to the tones, like in the genres they are meant to be played in. No point in playing classical pieces on Rhodes sounds haha and you're a funny geezer. Anyway all the best guys, rock on !!

@@sunrise5803 just bought this one, waiting for it to come from bris to melb. I was almost sold on the Roland fp30x but having a mod wheel and 650 more sounds sold me on this one, as the comparison Vid with this one and the Roland showed lots of similarities other than that. Anyhoo, just thought it was funny coz I also got my first keyboard the CTX 700 in 2020. But yeah I couldn’t figure out how to make it my controller, plus I’m fond of pads for drumming so I use a novation mini mk3 for that… and this digital piano will be for learning how to play Elton John and such, and recording sounds directly from it, and jams/performances :) Did you end up purchasing the Roland?

I'd agree with Jack on the action comments. If you are to judge every digital piano by the same yardstick then of course this is not going to perform favourably. You can make the case that perhaps the Roland FP30 or Yamaha P125 are better choices in a similar price range (and incidentally I went with the Yamaha because the speakers are monstrous compared to the Casio and I use it for musical theatre rehearsals and background piano gigs with no external amplifier) but having owned previous iterations of the Privia line and gigged with them, they are very good for 1) Gigging pianists 2) Beginners with serious space or budgetary constraints. While I would agree with James at TPF that you wouldn't want to play too much classical music on this instrument, most of the repertoire he's playing is at the top end of the spectrum and if you've invested in your craft to that degree you will have at some point upgraded to something which better fits your skillset

I was interested in the critic's review where he showed that when hitting a black key and a white key at the same time, the black key sounded first. Or playing arpeggios with black and white keys, the time is off. I think he was reviewing the 1000 and 3000. I played a 3100 at a local GC and didn't have that experience. Maybe Casio corrected it somehow.

it's the same with this as with practically any other stage piano. Use the line outs to connect to speakers/PA , use MIDI over USB (or bluetooth) to connect to a DAW. With this in mind, you should be able to find plenty of tutorials online, since it's pretty much universal (this keyboard is the same as pretty much any other professional stage piano in this regard). Hope this helps point you in the right direction :)

As someone who learned to play the piano on an acoustic piano, I have to say for me personally nothing can touch an acoustic piano so far, that's not to say when digital pianos are released on to the market they aren't great, it's all down to personal choice. Piano Forever despite having great piano reviews which I cannot fault the guy, however, coming from an acoustic piano background also, it can be very difficult to go from acoustic to digital if you have learned and trained on acoustic. I've bought several digital pianos in the past, there was always something I never liked using digital, I feel the closest I've ever come to an acoustic piano was when I played a Kawai MP7SE, the sounds were fantastic and just as important the key bed was probably the closest to a real acoustic piano. I moved over to using a weighted midi controller and using VST software for my piano sounds, to which I've found my niche sounds and a great key bed. As ever great video Jack, keep up the great work.

Damm, you're so polite and nice addressing the trashing of this beautiful and cool instrument that you won me. Also, the piano sounds sound quite well sampled and nuanced. I think perhaps I can consider myself a professional player (I have no degree in music, only an incomplete bachelor's and an incomplete doctorate in musicology, but people used to say that I'm a professional. Whatever), but I can't afford a Nord or a YC, although I usually perform in one owned by some institutions or studios. I was looking for a 88-weighted instrument for myself, it can be a controller with reasonably good internal sounds and good action, so I can gig if necessary and rehearse without turning on all the laptop stuff. I'm still considering getting a Roland RD-88, but with a newborn baby at home and a war at the borders, money is shorter than ever. Then, I saw this Casio, and I had this preconception about the brand as many other musicians. But heard Stu's review from Merrian, saw your own, read the specs, and cannot ignore how slim and pretty this board is. The nit-picking genius boy is an impressive classic pianist, but it was too harsh and is too much elite, typical of virtuosos with a classical education, Im not sure that was fair. Thanks for the video and greetings for Latvia.

I totally agree with you re that nit-picker..he gets on my nerves ..I've been comparing the pxs1100 with thr Rolands, yamahas etc that are fighting it out in that price/spec bracket and I was so surprised that I ended up preferring the casio. For me, I much prefer the default piano patch (didn't like toomany of the others tbh) but Iloved the feel of the keys and the amount you can dig in to the tone despite a relatively shorted stretch of travel.. I hated the yamaha p121 piano sound - sound too generic to my ears . Roland was nicer but too metallc when played hard.. So Uwas going to get the px1100 but now I think it#ll be the 3100, for the extra 676 patches.. I've been in touch with the Japanese maestro on YT who reviews all types of keyboard - he's apro and boughtthe pxs1100..so iz can't be too shabby 🙂

I think James did a good job exposing the potential issue with the action. Clearly it’s not going to affect all styles of playing, but I will say that with someone who has a “classically trained” background, I can see the action being a problem for some well known pieces. Growing up, a huge portion of my playing was classical, and you really can notice something like the key action issue James posted. However, I think given the price point, the likelihood is that most buying this model will not be “seasoned” enough to tell the difference. James is obviously classically trained, and a very good pianist too. Naturally he’d notice the issue.

He clearly finds one aspect critical, which is ok. But then he attacks Casio has a company as a whole, which I find a bit much. I bought the 3100 for my daughter who loves it, she also has an acoustic piano, plays on all kinds of different piano's really. She is classically trained. Some people want the perfect (in their eyes) tool/instrument otherwise it is the end of the world, other people don't mind that much and just get on with it. We got the 3100 because of budget, the integration with apps specifically and the portability so she can play when we visit family (our family is all in different countries in Europe).

Living in small apartments this keyboard is great for the space constrained. Agree on the points on the action. Whilst I’m a classical player it’s impossible to expect a full grand piano experience in such a small casing. I looked at the Kawaii ES-920 which has an amazing key action but the size and bulk of the unit is just too much.

Why nobody talks about black keys noise? Some of them are too noisy like rattle. My piano has a "rattle effect" in black keys of fourth octave, and this "rattle" is louder than sound of keys (on 50% volume).

Jack is clearly upset in this review. And he's right, this piano is really cool. It's a simple instrument, made to be portable, full of different sounds and features, and portable. There are other entry level pianos with great keybeds that probably will have only five or six sounds on it, it's just a different product. I love a good keybed, it's a really important feature for me, but it's a specific feature.

The action issues with this piano are overblown. If your major criteria is accurate action, maybe this isn't the digital piano you're after for sure. I had researched these extensively, including watching PianoForever's video so I was well aware of the issue. Having played them all, I ended up buying the Casio (PX-S3000 specifically) and just like the CTK-611 I bought nearly 30 years ago after similar research, I made the right purchase *for me*. I am not demanding of my action, the action on this feels fine, it's light and can be easily dragged around, has good line outs and can even run off AA batteries in a pinch...and I love the added sounds and features you get for the price. Obviously, buy the right piano for your needs, but be reasonable about what you're expecting in this price range. There will be trade-offs.

I've been looking to purchase my first DP and whilst I really like the features/form factor or the casio, I have to admit that the whole key action controversy had me spooked. The reality is however that I'm a total novice and this will not make a blind bit of difference to me and so i'm going to put that out of my head and get the DP that suitable for my needs. If I don't make it to Carnegie Hall, it will not be because of a Casio.

@@MrUnderwurlde Absolutely. If you find yourself hugely concerned about the action---and make no mistake, some people will genuinely care if they want some particular kind of action---then definitely take that into account; however, you should try not get sucked into some of the hyperbole surrounding this subject (I almost did myself). Being fair, I'm just a person who plays guitar and piano in a casual 3-piece, and like to have some keyboard-like frills on my piano where I can get it; I'm not a classically trained concert pianist or something.

Thanks Jack. If piano forever is an awsome piano player I feel like I am Horovitz level:))))). You made my day.. Anyway , I know his videos and etc. He's also complaining about Nord keybeds, which go perfectly for Molina or Mike Bereal , as we know ( who become a Nord endorser / image as he was playing Nords long before that) and many others at this killer level. I find his videos funny....at max. As about piano playing, his phrasing sucks like in he has none :))( I mean his Claire de Lune and etc ). As about jazz and etc, he's a joke. Not a good one:)) .I don;t understand how a person at your level says he's cool. Maybe you're just being nice. Coming back to the point , Casio has great products and as you said...you can't feel the difference . I will make my comment easier to understand. I got tired of all these wannabe internet ''virtuosos'' ( including the ones in comments) who keep whining about the actions. A bunch of guys who will never play a great stage or etc. And the actions that are available today on ANY digital are far more better than let's say an old vienese mechanic piano which was a max some people could afford till digitals came along . Still great pianists got trained like this. On crap acoustic pianos. Plus any digital will give you something that is priceless . Hours of ''mechanical ;'' study at very low volume . If one would like the REAL DEAL ( and if you are really at THAT level of golden hands) that would mean you have the £££££ to buy a Fazioli or Steinway or whatever is suitable to taste , touch ,music needs. Anyway , you have some of best presentation videos and best analyse available on the net. And great playing as well.

Arguably I'm not much of a pianist, but after two years of owning px-s3000 I'd say the action is not a problem at all. Surely if you're a classical musician used to a real piano, this one may fall a bit short. There is another issue, however, which I consider a much bigger problem. Oddly enough for me it's hardly ever mentioned. Namely - fiddling with effects is extremely bothersome. Say you like the basic sound of a piano or whatever and you want to add a bit of compression, drive and phaser - you're looking at countless presses of buttons and descending into the seventh ring of hell of menus and categories (if even possible at all, since there is no option of choosing effects freely - you're limited to tweakable preconfigured FX chains). Alright, I might be slightly exaggerating, but I do feel very strongly that this is absolutely the weakest point of this, otherwise very nice, instrument. Unfortunately, this issue hasn't apparently been addressed with the updated s3100.

Verry cool video, Jack! Thank you for your honesty when it comes to actions and for even mentioning James of ThePianoForever. Yep, this guy is very, very picky, but from the viewpoint of a classical pianist this is completely understandable. I also studied classical piano and I can pretty much relate to what James is talking about when it comes to actions - although of course you are right: Your demands should not be TOO high when it comes to a digital piano which only costs a few hundred bucks. Have you ever checked out Stu Harrison's reviews on Merriam Pianos -> ru-vid.com (the one on the two new Casios is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sRdz74bYxxU.html) - Stu is probably somehow in the middle between you and James: Actions and keybeds are important to him, but he is not as "extreme" as James is.

Regarding the controversy, at some level I agree with you - not terribly expensive pianos, BUT you can get other electric pianos where the action is not messed up at the same price point. Now, one can argue that for users that don't demand excellent key action, the compromise to make this piano slimmer is worth it to them. I think from more demanding users, it is not an acceptable trade-off, and Casio should just admit that they made a compromise to slim down these pianos.

Admittedly, the Casio offered a lot of decent sounds and rhythms/accompaniments, but it's user interface was anything but user friendly! To be honest. It was a complete PITA! The lack of a dedicated modulation wheel was also very unfortunate. It's form factor was great and the fact that you could use it battery powered is great, but that crappy user interface and tiny screen..... Agggghhhh!!!!! Oh yeah the Roland is IMHO superior when it comes to dedicated acoustic pianos, electric pianos and organs. The Casio organs are frankly crap and I'm very fussy with my organ sounds.
