#Estonia #GrandPiano #Acoustic
Greetings and welcome to the Merriam Pianos RU-vid channel. We’re hopping back over to an acoustic grand piano today as we’ll be taking a close look at Estonia’s smallest grand piano, the L168.
At 5’6”, the L168 is on the fringe size-wise in terms of what might be called a baby grand, but it is the entry point into the world of Estonia and is widely regarded as one of the highest value smaller handmade performance grand pianos currently available.
If this is your first time on the channel please like, subscribe, and hit that notification bell!
Initial Thoughts
Given that Estonia is a newer line for us here at Merriam Music, we simply haven't spent as much time in front of their instruments as we have some of the other usual suspects like Kawai, Yamaha, Steinway, or C. Bechstein for example.
But the process of getting to know a piano of the caliber of an Estonia takes time to fully grasp the subtleties and intricacies, just like a fine wine for example.
Piano Sound
Right off the hop, the L168 seems to give the player more the less the player tries to force things. This is in contrast to the top concert grands available which are all aimed at offering the widest possible dynamic range, where what you give to the piano is what you get back.
The L168 is more nuanced in a sense, and there’s an incredible bloom in the mid and upper mid-range of the piano with an amazing sustain.
The fundamental tone is very prominent, and the scale design, as well as Estonia’s unique approach to their soundboards, are a big reason for this.
The bass register is incredibly clear, which is not common for other grand pianos of this size. The break is still a little bit audible, which is close to impossible to fully mask with pianos of this size.
The top octave and a half have a bit less colour than some comparable instruments in the quality range, and this is likely due to Estonia’s bridge design, which trades colour for superior sustain.
Action
The action plays very nicely out of the box due to some great regulation that occurs at the factory. It’s a fairly conventional feeling European action since it’s built by Renner, and Renner supplies most of the high-end European piano manufacturers with their actions.
There’s not much more to say here - this is a very high-quality Renner action that is par for the course with handmade European pianos.
Finishing & Cabinetry
Estonia puts an inordinate amount of time into the finishing and cabinetry of their pianos. There’s complex joinery where the beams connect with the rim and the underside of the L168 is very impressive.
When you consider the price point an L168 is available for, the level of carpentry here is simply astounding.
Closing Thoughts
If you’re looking for an instrument that really talks to you, the L168 has the potential to be an incredibly compelling musical partner. Bravo Estonia!

Totally agree and as a working with the piano industry from last many years I have noticed there are many good companies they are not much focusing marketing or May they are happy with the way they are doing business. This brand has so much potential they should find a new distributor from various countries, Like in my country India market is building and best part is there’s no competition only few brands available in India. Brand like Estonian must focus on marketing. They are lucky that Mr. Stu did a great review. Steinway Yamaha & Kawai is very good in marketing and they are reached to small countries and they are getting a customers.

I went through a house fire last April and have been looking for a new piano to renew what i used to love years ago before I had kids, one of whom was so sensitive to loud sounds that I stopped playing. Then life stayed busy with career even after my kids grew up, and now, in my 60's, I decided that it is high time to get back to what used to occupy me a good couple hours a day from 8th grade onward until I became a mom in my thirties. How can I thank you-I came across a used 2007 Estonia that I think I might now want to buy! Your video, your playing spoke to me. Thank you.

who makes these type of comments?
@donaldaxel
@donaldaxel 6 месяцев назад
@@kg0173 :: I would have made this type of comment. Suffice to say that i love the explanation of the sustain, cause by another type of soundboard (no tapering). I would like to know more about how the soundboard has a curve, it is convex, called "the crown". To think of the weight a soundboard must get from 100 steel strings - that is a pressure which in time deforms the soundboard. But still, the video gives much information, and the sound examples in the middle and soprano registers are beautiful. The demonstration of basses on computer loudspeakers does not make much sense, but still my system had external speakers and I can follow the thought. And ideally, when you play the basses you would normally play octaves, thereby the weird bas-sound becomes an addition of strength to the pitch, and adding "depth" of course. Even Boesendorfer Imperial sounds odd in the basses.

Thanks, Stu. I really appreciate your analysis of the tone. It's something I think about a lot as I look to replace my Yamaha U1. Lots of uprights (e.g., Grotian, Kawai) seem to have a "muffled hand bell" sound (imho), which I don't like. The Estonias that I've played have all been extremely bright. But I like how the Estonia's tone does not have that initial hand bell sound on the attack.

I believe that the entire line of Estonia pianos was redesigned around 2013 or 2014. I recently bought a previously owned Estonia L168 that was built in 2003. I’m wondering how the construction of the redesigned L168 differs. The sustain of the piano I bought is very good, though perhaps not as good as the piano in this review. Great playing and review. Thanks.
@JoeLinux2000
@JoeLinux2000 2 года назад
I would say it has more to do with the scaling, and the voicing of the hammers. There is only so much you can redesign. This piano may have Swedish steel strings or something equivalent. This piano is particularly well tuned. It is the type of piano sound I enjoy. What it has is very nicely balanced sympathetic resonance, which is not harsh in any way. Bass is not very good by itself, but I think the overtones match the upper strings. I hear an instrument that is very well voiced, and tuned. Perhaps Estonia has created an instrument that can actually be tuned.

What makes me think you liked playing this piano! I have listened to a lot of your reviews and this sounds up there with the best. Fascinating to hear what you say about the fundamental to harmonic ratios; I listened to your SK3 v L190 comparison and can now understand what you are describing. How would you compare the L168 to the L190? Does the L190 lose or retain that intimacy? Is the octave or two below middle C (ish) improved? Thanks as always for your wonderful reviews.
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 3 месяца назад
Hi! Brent here! I would have to leave Stu to comment on his personal feelings about the L168 versus L190 conversation. For me, even the L190 has incredible intimacy to it, but, naturally, it has more power than the L168. The rounder, songlike voice is what creates that intimate, captivating voice to me. And given that all of these pianos are personally quality-checked by Dr. Laul, virtually all Estonia pianos possess that gorgeous voice right out of the crate. The low and low-mid register is superior on the L190 in my opinion though, which is also to be expected given the musical benefits of the increased scale length. :)

Great playing, Stu. It sounded beautifully and well adapted to more modern repertoire - at some point I had a flashback to a VST review where something played in "cinematic" guise. Would love to hear e.g. some Chopin on it, Debussy or Liszt Années de Pèlerinage. Renner action is what is in your Hamburg Steinway D and I believe Renner never made a cheap version. Yes, it sings beautifully. As you talk about Shigeru and Fazioli, did you see/hear the finals of this year's Chopin tournament in Poland? In the top 3 one player played a Shigeru and another a Fazioli. At one point you played single notes in the upper bass and these had a higher pitched ring to them that would make me move on (I live in Europe, not in your geography). The question is if this too loud and at some point seemingly out of tune ring is a matter of tuning or if it will never go away.

@philosophicallyspeaking6463
Hi Stu, You realize of course that, like me, you are discussing sound in terms more typically associated with smell and taste, perfume and wine, not because it is 'hip' but because it is appropriate. And, as is becoming my habit, I of course agree with your assessment. Without intending to, are causing me to become very interested in Estonia, because this is the second Estonia video in which you describe it's sound in terms that resonate with my own language as I undertake the search for a new piano for my home. This purity of 'fundamental' sound actually causes the sustain (I can share the physics that obligate it if you want mathematical confirmation of what you are hearing) and it is what I commented on in an Estonia's showdown with a Shigeru. The complexity of...'sonority' that is manically pursued by most other brands (who intend similitude between stage pianos and residential instruments) are, IMO, the downfall of those instruments in practical service in domestic settings. Is it possible too that your microphone(s) just gets along well this piano? What microphones are you using? It would help my understanding of what I am hearing, because I am very familiar with all of the usual suspects as they interact with pianos. Any information about the room size and its constitution would frame and contextualize its sonority. You can take the piano out of the room, but you can't take the room out of the piano. (Note: I'm assuming that there is no processing of any kind.)
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos Год назад
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for writing in! As Stu illustrates in the Estonia video series, Estonia grands are absolutely gorgeous pianos with one of the purest and effortless songlike voices on the market. They are one of the most unique pianos you will experiences in terms of its tonal profile and dynamic output. They are truly beautiful instruments through and through! In terms of your questions related to the microphones we're using, I would have to consult with our AV team on that front, but I do not that know post processing is done in order to ensure that the natural tone of these instruments is preserved and relayed to our viewers without alteration. As for the room we record and shoot in, it does vary as we have three large showrooms that each have multiple rooms. This particular video was shot at our Robert Lowrey Showroom in Toronto, which is the largest piano showroom in all of Canada. The room is quite large and the ceilings quite tall. With that said, the pianos are close miked and no additional room microphones are being used in order to present the piano's voice as neutrally as possible. Inevitably, the room will always have an impact on the sound as you noted, but we do try to eliminate that influence when recording as much as possible. Thanks for tuning in and hope this helps! :)

Beautiful sound. Very enjoyable video. Your website lists the 5 models from Estonia as models you carry: 168, 190, 210, 225, and 274. This is the smallest one. I am wondering if you have in stock in your showroom the rest of them, or they must be ordered. It would be interesting to hear the larger models, especially the Model 274 (9') Concert Grand. I have noticed in previous comparison videos with brands you don't carry as a dealer (like Yamaha), that the showroom where the used Yamaha pianos sit looks different from your regular brand new piano showroom. For example, in your 2020 video comparison between the Yamaha U1 and the Kawai K300, the showroom décor for each piano look very different: the floor has a somber grey carpet on the used Yamaha U1, whereas the new Kawai K300 is on a cozy, well illuminated red carpet. The same thing happened when you compared, on another video, the used Yamaha C2X vs new Kawai GX2: the Yamaha was sitting on a somber grey carpeted floor surrounded by a pile of pianos, whereas the Kawai G2X was sitting on a much pleasant environment with warm lights. It makes sense to put the used pianos you don't carry as a dealer on a separate side of the showroom.

@@MERCEDES-BENZS600GUARD_V12He said the Yamaha was manufactured in 2016 and the Kawai in 2019, and the video was shot in 2020. It is quite possible that the Kawai was new. At worst, it would have been just a few months old and returned, which sounds unlikely. If you pay attention to the showroom where each piano appears, it is clear that they are not sitting in the same area. The Kawai sits in a pretty area with banners of artists, their piano diagrams, posters, warm lights.... the Yamaha sits on a warehouse-style area with dull grey carpet (office style), where you can see old upright pianos, and all pianos appear piled up. Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! While it is not uncommon for some tweaks to be made every few years with a particular model, the quality and excellent of Estonia pianos have been quite consistent since Dr. Indrek Laul took over the company. Changes to certain materials or design elements can sometimes be dictated by availability of componentry from other suppliers. With that said, I'm not sure as to exactly what differences there may be between a L168 from 2007 versus 2024. However, from my experience with playing Estonia pianos from the mid 2000s, I can attest to the fact that they are exceptional pianos that possess the songlike voice that Estonia pianos are renowned for.

@@MerriamPianos Well that particular question had to do specifically with how the Estonia emphasizes the fundimental and it's plateau like sustain. Honestly Stu Harrison is about the only demonstrater I can listen to. He often allows these great pianos to explore the kinds of sounds a jazz pianist needs to hear on the soundboards of these instruments. Otherwise it's all diatonic all the time or just Chopin's greatest hits. PS Copland while associated with "Billy the Kid" and "Fanfare" he wrote much more polytonal Avant Garde sounding music like Ginestera than most folks know.

They are both exceptional instruments, but I would personally give the current Estonia pianos a significant edge in terms of material quality and craftsmanship. They have very different tonal profiles too. The Estonia pianos have a very distinct intimate, songlike sound to them, which is quite expressive and beautiful. :)

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Stu could make a toy piano sound like a German-made concert grand! ;)

Estonia i think similary Fazioli sound but not too hard... Estonia very balance about tone... Fazioli too hard 😮 my opinion

Tonal preference is a very personal thing of course, but the Estonia grand pianos are incredibly expressive with one of the most beautiful song-like voices on the market. :)
