#VSL #Garritan #CFX
Hello and welcome to the Merriam Pianos RU-vid channel. We’ve got another one for you here in our ongoing series on VST’s as we pit two samples of the Yamaha CFX concert grand against each other with the Garritan vs the VSL Synchron library.
Despite both VST’s being based on the Yamaha CFX, they actually offer highly different musical experiences. Without question two of the most popular VST’s out there, we hope you enjoy this comparison!
Please like the video below, and if it’s your first time to the channel, subscribe and hit that notification bell!
Background:
The Garritan CFX runs for about $200 USD. The VSL Synchron we’re looking at today is the standard library and not the Deluxe one, but it’s still fairly pricey at about $300 USD, whereas the Deluxe one is around $700 USD.
These two plugins do not deliver the same product despite being built off of the same acoustic piano. The interfaces are also quite different, which could be a deciding factor for some folks.
General Observations:
The VSL delivers a very high level of detail, which the Garritan can’t match, even with extensive tweaking of the settings. This is especially apparent in the treble. For solo playing, particularly classical, the VSL definitely seems like the obvious choice. For everyday playing, there’s a not really a clear winner, and personal preference will be the deciding factor.
Garritan CFX:
The Garritan has three different mic setups, and they’ve captured a full sample set up for each mic configuration - ‘Player’, ‘Classic’ and ‘Contemporary’.
VSL Synchron:
There are 5 different captures with the VSL, which can be mixed and matched at will. There’s less variety of mic placements here, but more flexibility with regards to configurations.
Sound:
There’s more detail, especially in the ‘air’ around the tone with the VSL plugin. That said, we actually prefer the way the CFX was voiced with the Garritan sample.
Another big difference comes down to the rooms. The Garritan sounds like it was recorded in a smaller room resulting in greater tonal reflection, and a more textured ambience.
User Interface:
The VSL is nice in that, if you get away from using the presets, it’s pretty easy to use, and actually feels like you’re mixing like you would in a recording session.
On the Garritan, there’s a variety of microphones and mic placements, with great variety of textures.
Summary:
If you’re looking for a plugin that offers a wide variety of recording approaches and compression settings, especially for contemporary recording, the Garritan is a wonderful option.
When it comes to exposed, solo playing, the VSL Synchron is the superior choice here in our opinion
Ultimately, both are great VST’s, and your choice will likely come down to what kind of project you intend to use a VST for.
Thanks so much for watching!.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you for your reviews, Stu, which I think are some of the best around. Coincidentally I had bought the Ravenscroft a few months back, but also wanted a different flavour and just bought the Garritan CFX. So your series of reviews essentially confirmed that I made good choices, especially for the styles I am recording. And by the way, your playing is wonderful to listen to!

Really appreciate the care and detail put into this review/comparison! Most reviewers don't catch subtleties like the quirky harmonics you mentioned at 16:20. That attention to detail plus your skillful playing and history of reviews gives me full confidence in your assessment. The Garritan CFX has been my go-to VST for a few years now for solo playing (mostly classical, but also jazz and whatever else). As someone who is lucky enough to also own an actual 7-foot Kawai grand, I've still been extremely happy with the Garritan CFX for quiet-time practice and digital projects. It's the only VST I've encountered that allows me to actually "get lost" in my playing and forget I'm triggering digital samples. That said, I'm extremely interested in the VSL CFX. At first blush, I still prefer the Garritan's sound, but that may partly be familiarity bias. And, of course, one can never form a full opinion on a piano VST until feeling it under one's own fingers. I've heard VSTs that sound beautiful in audio demos only to feel totally lifeless when under my own control. But anyway, in terms of versatility, VSL's offering seems to be a clear winner over Garritan's, given the deeper options for customizing mic levels and such. If it's helpful to any prospective buyers out there, I can whole-heartedly recommend the Garritan CFX. Given how much lower its price is, I think it's the better option for most people. The VSL CFX also seems like an incredible option though, and I'll likely shell out the cash for it eventually once the price (hopefully) comes down a bit.

Much appreciated, that you share your experience and opinion with the viewers in YT. Thank you. There's no "but" here. Thank you, sincerely. And, I like your piano improvisations. An incidental comment I read in this series, was so sad, that in a research model collecting data by questionnaire, such responses would trigger the psychosis/neurosis check (and hence would not contribute to the overall research). The comparison of these "instruments" is seemingly dominated by the microphones and their placement when recording samples. Listening to your CFX playing with your settings, I found that it sounded a bit "cinematic" to use a label from another virtual instrument vendor. Is that a "thing" these days? Elsewhere, I heard a video of an acoustic grand piano being played live and it had a pair of high-end microphones in the grand piano's case, plus a pair of another type of high-end microphones on stands at horizontally a bit more than a meter from the rim of the grand and higher than the open lid, with these mikes pointing down. You see the picture? The concert hall was empty. The pianist played a piece by Debussy that should be "profondément calme" - however it got performed in a rather macho way. Interestingly that pianist said that a composer had complained that musicians played to the instrument first, rather than to the music first. I think he played to the music first, but also feel he did not understand "profondément calme" nor understood that this piece about a cathedral has a few bars in it that should ring like church bells. No, he made no "mistakes" relative to the printed notes in the sheet music. And that Shigeru sounded so beautiful. Wow. But I feel the 4 microphones had been mixed in a way that made it sound "cinematic" - not what I would have heard in the concert hall, nor what I would hear playing it. And a fraction of a second I was thinking, did I hear the instrument "pure" or did I hear clever miking? The fun thing with these VST is that a pianist can play with that. I have to say, the VSL sounded, sounds, very realistic - with the microphone placement/mixing colouration as disclaimer. With the amount of samples VSL collected, we are inclined to be impressed by that, but what we forget is how playing back these samples requires some serious programming and layering or looping them to the point listeners don't register side-effects and think they experience a real piano - this was really cleverly done. Academically, if we look at "sample-based" digital instruments then the blending and looping and connecting of samples must be key in the R&D. As to "modelling", my take is this still starts with samples, and these are analysed in a way that converts the samples from one key into a mathematical function that describes each of the samples, but now easily can be extrapolated into in-between levels as well as legato notes. This then makes modelling comparable with TrueType fonts as well as with data compression. Or, I do believe that modelling virtual pianos are a data compression way of dealing with samples. Neither is better. Each has its weak points and each is totally dependent on how the samples got recorded and the playback coed was programmed. Still, so far VSL seems the best in my ears

Stu, I was going to suggest/request that you play more single notes, scales, isolated chords in various octaves in your comparisons since your exquisite playing can make any VST sound good. Glad you did some scale runs in this video. Really helps to give us mere mortals a sense of what the VST's will sound like in our hands. Really enjoying these VST reviews. Thanks!

It might be useful playing some isolated notes, but playing that can be misleading too, since a piano sounds most natural and best when there's a flow of music. Its true tone depends very much on polyphony.

@@MarkHopewell That's very interesting. I see what you mean. Digital piano samples are often weak in the centre of the piano, so it could be the same for VSTs. One of the reasons I like Yamaha is that it tends to be firmer in the centre than some other brands. Notably, the new FPX series from Roland is attempting to address this problem too. Better late than never Roland! A lot of sound techies favour a V shape in mixes, but I think this is disastrous for pianos. It seems that digital sampling, modelling and dp speaker design is beginning to take a stand against conventional wisdom on how to reproduce and amplify sound. A piano is not a human voice or a saxophone.
@Zoco101
@Zoco101 3 года назад
@@MarkHopewell I'm sorry to hear you're disappointed with the product you bought. That's a shame. Instead of just turning the mids up, try turning the bass and treble way down. I did that recently on a combo amp which doesn't even have a mids control. It helped a lot, so I'm going to use that amp to reinforce my (surprisingly good) onboard Yamaha speakers on cocktail gigs. If you've tested the sound with good headphones, it can't be just about your speakers, but I'm sure you'd get a much better definition (particularly the mids) on those HS7s you mentioned. Seems that Yamaha monitor speakers have the best mids you can hope to find. I'm still using my 20-year-old Yamaha MSP5s in my home studio Have you considered the Addictive Keys Studio Steinway?

You're very welcome! Thanks for tuning in! The ability to capture a player's performance as transparently and vividly as possible ultimately comes down to the quality of the MIDI controller and its sensor system as well as the player's actual performance. I have tested both pianos recently in a showroom. The ES110 was embarrassing: Slow action, and so-so sound. If you're a beginner on a budget it might be OK for you. The FP30X sounds good and has a brilliant action for its price. I didn't like the controls much and the default touch sensitivity is a bit light for me - jerky. I didn't have time to find out how to adjust it, so I couldn't test the other touch settings, but it's a good piano all the same. (I'm someone who used to hate FP pianos.) But buy the FP60X if you can afford it - such great value-for-money!

Garritan CFX is definitely easier to install and use than Synchron. All I can say is that I had nothing but problems when installing and trying to use Synchron. I already have Pianoteq and Garritan CFX (no problem installing or using them with the exception of CFX that I cannot reduce key return noise to 0). First of all, Synchron piano installation is unnecessarily complicated (I tried both free Soft Imperial and Bosendorfer Upright - both relatively small as far as library size). Secondly, no matter what file installation defaults I set, I had installation spread between two disks: numerous directories on my slower disk C: and some (library in particular) on dedicated, faster drive H: (I only want to have this drive used for VSTs). Finally, I had big lag between pressing the key and getting the sound. I have a specific setup. I use FP-90X connected with USB MIDI to my computer and I use USB Digital Interface option Roland has to send the digital signal over the same USB cable to FP-90X (Roland’s DAC, amp and speakers are used). It worked perfectly with Pianoteq and Garritan but no matter what parameters I set, I have this unacceptable delay. I have to use Roland as output for Synchron piano and Roland appears on the list of audio output options (only one option!). Their support did not get back to me. My experience witch VSL is bad (to say the least). I have no idea why no reviewer ever mentions the installation issues and the need for iLock hardware key. Needless to say, I have removed Synchron installation (purging everything) and will not touch VSL again!

Here is my update. I got a MacBook Pro and installed VSL Synchron pianos. Some for testing but I bought Bosendorfer Upright 130 that I really like. I have Garritan CFX and I prefer it when comparing with VSL Synchron CFX. Synchron Yamaha CFX although impressive is not without problems. It may be me but there is something about some upper base (below C4) that I do not like. they sound strange to me and I much prefer the sound of Garritan CFX for these tones. It was not mentioned but Synchron Yamaha CFX does not allow to change key return noise and this is something I always do. Pianoteq is definitely much easier to use as far as all the settings are concerned.

Thanks so much Stu! I've watched several of your piano plugin comparison videos, and I've really enjoyed and appreciated them. I love how you show off these instruments. I have Garritan CFX, and I love it, but currently (Nov 8, 2021), it is not natively compatible with Apple Silicon, and I want to get a Mac M1 Max. The vendor says it will run under the Rosetta emulator, but they don't seem to be planning to rewrite it for use in a DAW running natively. VSL seems more willing to port their stuff to native code, but they are not giving an ETA either. However, thanks to your videos, I at least know that once I do decide to upgrade, the VSL CFX is a great alternative.

Garritan is a weird company. They have a lot of libraries that are not competitive with the quality of today's VSTs, yet they really nailed it with the very high quality and hugely popular CFX. But the product is now many years old and they seem to have NO interest in updating it, or replacing it. Weird. I suppose they've just sat back and raked in the money and will do so until people stop buying it. They seem to lack vision or resources, or both. I just bought the CFX, so like you I am also worried about future compatibility.
@NeuroPete
@NeuroPete 2 года назад
@@twtobin941 I don't regret buying Garritan CFX, and I hope you don't either. I have had many hours of enjoyment from it. However, when I upgrade to M1, I want to get the full performance of running my DAW in native mode. To be able to do so (if I understand correctly) all your plugins and instruments must also run natively. So I am looking for a new go-to piano. Several of the ones that Stu has reviewed would probably be great, but my top choice is Nils Frahm's Noire (Stu's video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BK0KWTRVJa8.html). Like Garritan, Noire is sampled from a Yamaha CFX, but the sample size is much smaller - 16GB vs. 133GB - and that includes TWO distinct sample sets - one for a "pure" version of the piano, and one for the same piano fitted with felt for a softer sound. Somehow, even with such a small sample set, the pure version manages to sound great - possibly as good as the Garritan (as far as I can tell from RU-vid!). However, what I really like about Noire is the soft, ethereal quality of the patches beyond the pure piano. Also, there is the "particles engine", a wonderful random algorithmic sound generator. I like what I've heard about Noire so much, I am not going to wait until I get an M1 - just a few weeks until Black Friday!
@twtobin941
@twtobin941 2 года назад
@@NeuroPete I only listened demos of Noire recently. I am not a pro pianist, but I was very impressed with how wonderfully full and warm it sounds. But even the 'pure' version seems quite dark.Not in a bad way, but just compared to brighter Yamaha libraries like Garritan CFX. So it does its own unique thing, probably best suited to specific styles? It would certainly be fun to play, given all the creative options with it - particles, etc. I agree about the compatibility concern going forward. Like you, I am also eventually going to upgrade from my current Mac (late 2013 Mac Pro) .. probably to an M1 Plus Mac Mini when they finally announce them. I use Logic Pro, but am concerned about the compatibility of all my hundreds of plug ins. Some companies are dragging their heels with getting their stuff working with Apple Silicon, and some, like Garritan, seem dead in the water. As I said above, I find Garritan to be a very strange company. They have had continued success with CFX, but if you look at their website the last 'News' they published was in July of 2019!!! And they are still advertising very old products with no updates. Ever since Make Music bought them time has stopped. So I have no confidence they will update anything at all in future. I was probably stupid to buy the CFX full version recently.
@NeuroPete
@NeuroPete 2 года назад
@@twtobin941 I am a not a pro pianist either. Not even a very skilled one. But I really enjoy playing a nice-sounding piano. I am so glad that we live in a time that one can buy access (sort of) to a $200,000 grand piano (or several of them), relatively cheaply. Noire is such a great value! I agree with you about it having a slightly darker tone than Garritan, but I like that for the slow, quiet music I mostly play. I don't think that you were stupid to buy Garritan CFX. It was not obvious that M1 compatibility would be such an issue. As a PC user, I didn't even consider changing to Apple until I learned about the new M1 Max. As a computer programmer, I understand how much of an improvement the chip architecture changes were, but I also realized that this would mean extensive changes to software. Most people would not have known this. For me, when I do upgrade, I will mourn the loss of some effects and virtual instruments. But most of what I use is either already M1 native or looks like it soon will be (e.g.: Arturia, Waves, PreSonus, Spitfire). For those I need to replace, I will consider that as part of the already MASSIVE cost of upgrading (~$8,000 Canadian incl tax for 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max 64GB, 4TB SSD, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro). So far, it looks like Garritan CFX will be the only one I need to replace, assuming all the others are updated by the time I am ready to press the trigger (Spring/Summer 2022, maybe). The only issue will be converting any songs in my DAW that I might want to open in the new environment. Any tracks that use old effects and instruments will need to be bounced to audio before migrating. I don't plan to do much of that, so I am not too concerned.
@twtobin941
@twtobin941 2 года назад
@@NeuroPete Ha, I am in Canada also... so we pay the Canuck 'premium' on all Apple stuff. I am not looking forward to investing in a new Mac, but I have had my late 2013 Mac Pro for about 8 years now, so it's time to think about replacing before the Mac Pro is not longer upgradable (which should be a few years yet in reality). The Mac Mini M1Pro seems a good bet for me, though I will wait to see what cost/performance looks like. There is no way I can afford buying another Mac Pro given the outrageous pricing ... maybe their new M1 Mac Pro will be lower price point, but still not in my range of affordability. I also am a fan of Spitfire (and some VSL stuff) and am progressively getting into more (amateur) orchestral composition as well as songs with samples horn sections and lots of other sampled stuff, so I need the horsepower, and the amount of RAM, to be able to run a LOT of tracks of sample libraries - not to mention all my plug ins in Logic (Plugin Alliance, Soundtoys, Kush, TDR, Oeksound, some Waves and UA). I don't believe anyone saying 16 GB of RAM is enough to run 100+ tracks of sample players on the new M1 platforms, even if they manage memory more efficiently. I'll play it safe and go minimum 32 or 64. And also like you, I am also not interested in running anything under Rosetta. Whatever vendor products do not get upgraded I will simply not be using on the new platform. I can live without Garritan CFX, but it irks me that I just spent $200 on it, simply assuming they would upgrade Aria for M1. Even though they have a couple of notices on the Make Music website about it, it's all about using with Rosetta. They don't seem they have any plan to upgrade any Garritan products at all. Very stupid of them, unless Make Music is simply making a decision to let their Garritan business eventually die.

Apparently the copy protection dongle used for the VSL libraries isn't compatible with Linux and from what I can tell from their forums they really aren't a Linux friendly company. Anyone who has used Linux for a long time will have great difficulty migrating to Windows as it's an entirely annoying OS that has many drawbacks. I bought an Apple tablet a couple of years ago, but found out it was really not at all compatible in any user friendly way with Linux. For one thing the Apple tablet at that time didn't even have a file manager. I guess the regular OS does, but not iOS (at least at the time). I heard later that was corrected at least on some models.

Would you guys ever consider reviewing the Yamaha CP88 stage piano?
@BlueGrovyle
@BlueGrovyle 2 года назад
I'm noticing that your Synchron engine is hogging around 4 GB of RAM (sometimes even 5 or 6: 22:59) to load the samples and I wanted to know if anyone else has one of these pianos and is getting a similar result. When I open the Steinway D-274, the highest I get with the 5 mics that come with the standard package is around 1.3 GB. I'd assume that more memory usage would mean fewer audio pops since pulling from RAM is faster than from a drive, so I'm wondering if there's any way to control/increase my RAM usage for that purpose. I have the memory to spare, so I'd prefer the higher performance.

In order to really use the VSL without any latency you need an m1 (or equivalent on windows) and a lot of RAM; By that i mean, 64 gigs or more which is slightly frustrating. Also, SSD comes into play.

I would be interested to hear Stu's opinion of the UAD Ravel Grand Piano vst. I've never played a real grand so have nothing to compare. However, im running the trial and it sounds very good. I just wish i could get a dryer/closer sound. Even on close, the mics still seem to capture too much room reverb. But as I say, i have not played a real grand, so maybe this is how it sounds close up. Maybe, if Stu reviews this vst, he will comment on what he thinks?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 11 месяцев назад
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for writing in with the question! We will be tackling more VST plugins down the road, so I will definitely add the UAD Ravel Grand Piano to the list of potential plugins to discuss. I know what you mean. Sometimes, a very dry, direct sound is the preference, but VST plugins can still have a considerable amount of ambience/verb going on even at the driest setting. With that said, an acoustic grand piano (particularly semi-concert and concert grands) can have a lot of natural resonance, which can sound a bit like reverb. It is possible that is what you're hearing opposed to actual room microphones blended with the direct microphones used for the sampling.
@jonos138
@jonos138 11 месяцев назад
@MerriamPianos Thanks for the reply. Yes, you could be right. I guess it also depends on the mics used too, and their placement. 👍

@christopherpederson1021

Latency is determined by your driver in the audio interface you use. Also, how much your computer can handle the huge load of samples.

I really wish to buy VSL .. :( just seriously don't have those 500 bucks at this moment. But it's obviously better than Garritan which I luckily own and use with my VPC1. Those pianos are phenomenal piece of technology. 10 years ago it was unimaginable it's possible to actually achieve such detail. And now I honestly can say I prefer even my Garritan over many of great grand pianos worth 50k dollars and more.

Hi! Brent here! If you are using VST piano plug-ins, your digital piano essentially becomes a "controller", meaning that it simply tracking the notes and velocities you are playing while bypassing the tone engine. This will allow you to control the sound of the virtual piano. :)

I think the potential for more detail exists with larger samples. You can absolutely load up a huge sample bank with poorly recorded samples with no compression and have an inferior plugin...I definitely would never argue that the size of a sample set automatically equals quality. But assuming that both have been recorded with the same lossless settings, similar quality microphones, then a larger sample set - in the 'hands' of an algorithm capable of exploiting the additional information - should give you greater detail and depth. Also, as I tried to state (though perhaps I should have been clearer), more detail doesn't automatically equal 'better'..., assuming "better" is used to describe someone's preference for tone. The Garritan's out of the box range of tones and affected presets is far more diverse than out of the VSL, and several times I would see myself reaching for the Garritan vs the VSL. Exposed solo piano, played in a pretty traditional context, would be the only time I would consider the VSL a better choice for me...in most other cases, it would be a matter of tonal taste and what the project or application called for. Thanks Tamir and Michael for the discussion!! - Stu

Regarding mike positions watch this video by Simeon Amburgey: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kQ6Shsxv8aQ.html He is by the way reviewing the VSL Bösendorfer in his video and that piano just sounds awesome! 3. I own both. In my opinion vsl cfx wins easily. Better playability, much better sound quality, better software. Only thing garritan has over the vsl is maybe the nice natural reverb of the abbey road hall. Oh and una corda samples, but I don't think they are so good on the garritan. Garritan cfx is pretty good, but at the same time a bit overrated, if you ask me. Since I got the vsl I never play it. Of course the price is different as well.
