In this animation, you can watch the dynamic evolution over time, week by week, of a special ranking dedicated to the 29 'tennis leaders' who have held the No.1 ATP position since 1973, the year when the ATP ranking was first calculated by computer (marking the beginning of the so-called 'computer era').
This particular ranking is based on the total number of weeks each player has spent at No.1 in the ATP rankings.
Key points to note:
🎾 The initial brief period with Nastase at the top of this special ranking;
🎾 The subsequent long period of Connors' dominance, lasting until the mid-1990s when his record of 268 weeks at No.1 was surpassed by Lendl;
🎾 A long period (1982-2010) of dominance by American and Swedish players in at least the top 3 positions of the ranking;
🎾 Sampras surpassing Lendl (who had 270 weeks) in 1999;
🎾 Federer surpassing Sampras (who had 286 weeks) in 2012, after a record 237 consecutive weeks at No.1;
🎾 Djokovic surpassing Federer (who had 310 weeks) in 2021;
🎾 After the era of the BIG3 (Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal) and Murray, the new generation arrives: Medvedev, Alcaraz, and Sinner successively reach the ATP No.1 position (2022-2024);
🎾 As of September 9, 2024, Djokovic has already accumulated 427 weeks as ATP No.1;
🎾 The current No.1, Sinner, has a significant advantage over his closest pursuers, so it is expected that he can remain No.1 until the end of the year.

In questa animazione puoi vedere l’andamento dinamico nel tempo, settimana dopo settimana, di una particolare classifica riservata ai 29 “tennis leaders” che - sino ad ora - si sono avvicendati nel tempo nella posizione di No.1 ATP, a partire dal 1973, momento dal quale la classifica ATP è stata calcolata tramite computer (dando inizio a quella che viene chiamata “computer era”).
Questa particolare classifica è calcolata in base al numero totale di settimane complessive via via passate da ogni giocatore nella posizione No.1 dell’ATP.
Da notare:
-1) il breve periodo iniziale con Nastase in testa a questa speciale classifica;
-2) il successivo lungo periodo di preminenza di Connors, durato sino a metà del 1990, quando il suo record di 268 settimane al No.1 fu superato da Lendl;
-3) un lungo periodo (1982-2010) di prevalenza di giocatori
statunitensi e svedesi in almeno i primi 3 posti della classifica;
-4) Sampras nel 1999 supera Lendl (fermatosi a 270 settimane complessive);
-5) Federer nel 2012 (dopo un record di 237 settimane consecutive al No.1 ATP) supera Sampras (fermatosi a 286 settimane complessive);
-6) Djokovic nel 2021 supera Federer (fermatosi a 310 settimane complessive);

🎾 Only 29 players have conquered the first position of the ATP rankings from 1973 onwards since when the Ranking calculated with the computer was introduced.
In the early years, recordings of players' positions were scarce and only after the first ten years did they become more frequent until they reached a regular weekly recording.
