If you have a question about a play, adding a timestamp (MM:SS format) makes a huge difference in our ability to respond. Here is our linktree for additional content and communication avenues: linktr.ee/betterofficials

Very good selection of Plays, I especially liked the emphasis on Team Control fouls during loose ball scenarios.

11:34 10-7-2 "A player must not contact an opponent with his/her hand unless such contact is only with the opponent's hand while it is on the ball and is incidental to an attempt to play the ball." Also with 10-7-4 "A player must not extend the arm(s) fully or partially other than vertically so that freedom of movement of an opponent is hindered when contact with the arms occurs [...]" I believe the official was holding a patient whistle to see if an advantage was gained through these illegal acts, and once the official saw the offender was able to influence the rebound, they decided to enforce the above two contact related fouls. Had that offended player secured the rebound, I don't believe the official would have put air to the whistle.

At 6:15 there was an illegal screen but the offense ran out of bounds and then was the first to touch after coming in. My question is not about the illegal screen or running off the court then being the first to touch. My question is the illegal screen happened about 1 second before the offensive player touched the ball. Which do you call and why since the foul happened before the illegal touch. Was the screen illegal b/c the player was off the court? With the rule change this isn't a violation till the ball is touch first by the player that left the court?

caveat: this play was from last year. If the foul happened first, we call the foul. With the rule change it would not be a violation for leaving the court unless the player was first/next to touch upon returning.

Play four, slot should be down a little to the end line to watch free thrower, while trail should move down to help with the players at the three point line.

Hi - for play 2 the guy out of bounds is the first to touch here because the ball was in the air when he was still out of bounds. If he came in bounds prior to the pass, is it now legal, because the 'passer' is the first to touch the ball after he comes back inbounds?

Greg, I'm a tad confused about your definition of a team foul. On Play #3, the defender goes "over the back" of the offensive player, neither player has possession, yet the officials rule it a common foul with 2 shots (not a team foul). However, on Play #5 and the Bonus play, neither team has possession, and you say those should have been ruled team fouls. Can you explain the difference between Play #2 and Play #5 & the Bonus Play, please? Thank you.

The shot attempt ended team control on the “over the back” play. The other two plays team control had not ended since there was no shot attempt or change of possession

On play 3. If slot was higher I think he would have a better view. There is some displacement but not enough for me to call. Not sure why there was a double whistle.

What is the officiating mechanic for the last 2 plays where you said the fouls should be team control fouls vs player fouls?

Play one with new rule. What if A runs off court, goes behind lead to use official as a pick? Obviously can’t be first to touch the ball.

Agreed. Legal without being next to touch.

hi Greg you briefly spoke of the new rule of 5 team fouls and then the double bonus. this is a new rule for 2023-24. the elimination of the 1-1. many of us are unclear of the reasoning of this rule change. they say its to clean up post play roughness. this new rule changes almost everything of game strategy. I know many of us would like to hear your take on this change and help us rationalize the how and why's. 5 minute discussion would be great! i look forward to your thoughts.

FWIW, here is what the IAABO Denver Area 8 organization has to say about it: Eliminates the one-and-one for common fouls beginning with the seventh team foul in the half and establishes the bonus as two free throws awarded for a common foul beginning with the team’s fifth foul in each quarter and resets the foul at the end of each quarter. - Rationale: Improves flow by providing an opportunity for teams to adjust their play by not carrying over fouls from quarters while significantly reducing the opportunity for correctable errors to occur. Minimizes risk of injury by eliminating the one-and-one and reducing opportunities for rough play during rebounding opportunities.

@jeffwright7587 thanks Jeff Your response helps clarify the reasoning.

@@markstoll9636 I'm old school, so I didn't like the idea of removing the 1-and-1 foul shot when I first heard about it, and in fact, I voted to keep it when they surveyed us about it. But now that I read the rationale, I like it. Less potential correctable errors, less rebounding rough play opportunities, allow team to reset/adjust from one quarter the the next. Good rule I now say!

@jeffwright7587 it'll take me a while to process the pros and cons. I too am old school. We must be careful not to let woke agenda interfere with this game of finess and strength. Lets the chips fall where they will.

A player runs out of bounds voluntarily, how long can he remain out of bounds? Could he go get a coke from the concession stand?

@@BetterOfficials when you say "first to touch" after going out of bounds, really wouldn't that be "next to touch"? I mean, the ball handler is still touching the ball when the court-leaver reenters. It only becomes a violation if the court-leaver is the next one to touch it after the current ball handler, no? And is there a statute of limitations, e.g. what if the ball handler dribbles around for 20 more seconds, then passes to the court-leaver?
@BetterOfficials

I like your wording for reference. The rule states "first to touch"
