On Saturday 8 February 1879, the same day that Ned Kelly's bushranger gang took over the town of Jerilderie, England was playing New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground. When NSW opener Billy Murdoch was run-out in questionable circumstances, an estimated 2000 of the SCG crowd ran onto the field and rioted. Seeming to target Victorian umpire George Coulthard, England captain Lord Harris and player Albert Hornby were assaulted defending Coulthard. Other umpire Edmund Barton, who would become Australia's first prime minister said if NSW captain Dave Gregory did not send batsmen out, he would call it a forfeited match in favour of England, Lord Harris declined the offer. Play was called off for the day and resumed on the Monday when England won the match following an apology to Lord Harris from the New South Wales Cricket Association.
