My juvenile retic is very chill and so far has a normal food response-takes in stimuli, processes it momentarily, strikes and wraps up. My young adult boa (about 5 ft) has a very aggressive food response and will slam into glass if it sees or smells a rat. I use a paper towel roll to let my boa know that she is about to be held. I touch her lightly and make sure her head is facing away. A confident pickup and we are good to go. She is very curious and relaxed out of her enclosure and has never been defensive with me. I just have to be clear that its NOT feeding time. I appreciate your videos.

Thank you! It's a work in progress! My goal has been to just jump in with both feet and just publish 100 videos and then use the data I get back from those to really fine tune production and topics based on what people are liking. If this channel takes off like I'm hoping it will, all of the revenue from the channel will be re-invested into the animals for bigger facilities, better enclosures and more animals so we have unlimited potential really :-)

Love the retic videos! Not too many people on here that talk about the day to day experience with these animals, can't wait for more!

I’d also like to point out that live feeding is a big no no for Retics. The most difficult snakes I’ve had when I was younger were Adults that I did not raise myself

Even if the animal is striking you still have to be hands on with your animals.

Yup, I finally got home and added the FB link on the channel page here, I'm not very active on FB with Intrepid yet but I'll start paying more attention to it as the channel grows.

Yep, dead on about the loose snake. Responsible keeping is the only way or stay outta the hobby.
@IntrepidExotics
@IntrepidExotics 2 года назад
Absolutely agree. I know a lot of reptile people are afraid to say it, but not all reptiles are for everyone... some people think that its shooting ourselves in the foot by acknowledging that, but I tend to think that we are obligated to acknowledge that because ignoring issues are about the worst way to fix them.

Ya noticed that eh? Lol. I should have left in the clip where I put the camera on him for a second, but I'm working up a new video with him today if hes going to cooperate. I didnt handle him much in the last video so hopefully hes in good spirits today!

You have to be able to move these animals even when they don't want to be moved. there are going to be times when you have to get into their space when they don't want to be messed with.

I didn't know retics will eat themselves if not fed properly
@IntrepidExotics
@IntrepidExotics 2 года назад
Did I slip-up somewhere and say that? They won't "eat" themselves except in the rarest of cases I've seen...some of my snakes have missed with feeding strikes and bitten themselves though.

What about tap training by tapping their head before picking them up
@IntrepidExotics
@IntrepidExotics Год назад
There's a couple other vids that go into tap training, but yes that is essential especially if they are really reactive. We can overuse hooks as well though because after we shut down the food response any tapping after that is really just "poking the lion" so to speak which can make them defensive. Theres a balance we have to strike between tapping enough to turn off the food response preventing a bite and but not so much that we annoy them to the point that they bite.

Hey Intrepid, I just picked up a 6ft female retic who was being kept in a V70 tub and being fed an extra large rat every week, what would you recommend to get this lass healthier? I was thinking a large rat every fortnite since I have carpet pythons of similar size that stay lean and toned on that diet
@IntrepidExotics
@IntrepidExotics 2 года назад
Hey there! If its a 6ft mainland female she will be eating about 10% or equal girth meal weekly with plenty of exercise those last 2-3 days before eating, she will be growing quick, matabolizing quick and keeping her moving between meals will help keep her healthy.Just keep an eye to make sure shes not chunking up, if she does add a couple days between meals.
@zachheisen5022
@zachheisen5022 2 года назад
@@IntrepidExotics She's 25% dwarf so not full retic but I reckon she'll get fair sized. Looking forward to making her enclosure very arboreal.
@IntrepidExotics
@IntrepidExotics 2 года назад
@@zachheisen5022 I'd say she still has a good deal of growing to do, I'd still stick with what I mentioned and just keep an eye on her weight, if she starts pudging-up at all just space meals a bit further apart
@zachheisen5022
@zachheisen5022 2 года назад
@@IntrepidExotics Yeah, I have pics from the breeder and she looks a bit skinnyfat, maybe im just used to my lean and mean Carpet Python though.
@IntrepidExotics
@IntrepidExotics 2 года назад
@@zachheisen5022 skinny fat isn't a term I'm familiar with but if she doesn't look lean and athletic I would space meals some, retics should be just as lean as other arboreal, especially in their youth

Have you had a friend that your reticulated python didn't like at all? But that same snake is a big puppy to you.
@IntrepidExotics
@IntrepidExotics Год назад
Haven't really had that with mine but I have seen some snakes just not react well to certain people and do great with others
