If you feed your snake an appropriate sized meal once a week or once every two weeks then, yes, the retic will stay small compared to its overfed counterparts... for a while. The reality is that retics are large animals that generally average at 13-15ft - minimum. If you can't handle that basic fact of life and would prefer something smaller, then I would suggest that you stay away from retics entirely.

Near 4:45, Jay states that you can't tell the difference between a five year-old, five foot Retic and a three or five month-old, 5 foot one. Well, I've seen dozens of "power fed" pythons and boas of all sizes and everyone of them had/has a pinhead (small head and large fat body). A five year-old, five footer will have a normal sized head and the 3-5 month-old, five footer will be a pinhead every time! Very, very easy to tell which animal is older...every time!!! Jay's video of "Twinkie the monster snake at the Reptile Zoo" proves my point. Twinkie is 3-1/2 years-old, 22 feet long in the video and has an abnormally small head, what I and many call a pinhead! Compare Twinkie's head with that of any ten year-old retic, even a much shorter one and there's no comparison...Twinkie is a pinhead! All animals power fed are done so for one reason, to breed earlier...to make money faster, period.

if you can't deal with the potential size of a retic, don't get one.

I feel like the whole point in getting a retic is to have a big animal. The size makes them so facinating. Thats what makes them so atractive. Well that and all the amazing colors they come in.

Swilli Willi I like retic personality and appearance, I'd like a dwarf or super dwarf cross though. Personally I think most mainland retic keepers are selfish with it. Keeping a 15-20ft in a 6 x 2 or 8 x 2, rarely giving it time out of the cage, and overfeeding to get a huge snake to brag about. Realistically, I love the snakes but don't have the space and strength to deal with a 15+ foot snake. I accept that and simply don't get one rather than mistreating it or keeping it until it's too big then selling or releasing it.

Indeed. I think a reticulated python's digestive system works 40x harder when digesting, the liver doubles in size, it really is fascinating. I am a hunter which is VERY fortunate for my retic as the wood pigeons, magpies, crows, rats, rabbits, fox's, deer etc, go toward her and it saves me a RIDICULOUS amount of money! If you are interested I would recommend giving hunting a try or maybe ask a hunter if he's willing to sell some game to you or perhaps a butcher, farmer etc.

Good information and very helpful. I've heard people say that a retic should be over 15 feet by the time it's a year old, and then they show me an animal girthier than a Burmese python that's obviously obese. Ignore the keyboard experts and listen to the people who breed these animals for a living.

i fed my male tiger normally and he still got big. once a week when he was a baby. then once every other week his 2nd year. eventually he got too big for rats so i switched him to bunnies. he was on that every 2 to 3 weeks. ofcourse each feed was only 1 food item. anyways they dont all grow the same. i always hear tigers and sula's are two of the fastest growing retics.

As for maintence feeding, yes you can sliw there growth but like people every animal is different, best to ask how old the parents are and how big they are. I would suggest a timor puthon if you are affraid if a retic getting to big.

I'm not entirely sure jay is being honest here. I fed my mainland tiger retic twice a month and she is now 12ft at just around two years old!!!! I can't begin to imagine how big she might have been if I fed her four times a month as jay recommends.

Superdawrfs for a normal would cost ~1000. While a mainland normal retic cost ~125. I’ll buy the mainland and feed it the way he says to.

No point inhibiting the natural growth and what the snake should be feed get a carpet Python or a boa if u can't afford the price of a dwarf I won't be able to look after a mainland

Thanks for pointing that out to people Jay, my retics are fairly "dwarfed" due to my feeding schedule, not that it's my intent to keep em small, it's just easier on my wallet. ;D People forget (or don't know) how snake's digestive systems and metabolisms shut down as soon as there's no food in their belly's. Which is obviously why growth rates are so hugely affected by feeding. ;Phas

Cause they don't look like retics, at all. That's like saying to someone who wants a small great Dane to get a chi Wawa. It just defeats the purpose of getting the animal.

If you want a smaller retic get a super dwarf, they are s.d. retics not s.d. boas. Your superdwarf retics will still get 5-7 even 10 feet pending on the locale. Yes there are adult s.d. retics that are 4 feet, i have one and hes 7 years old, just like crocs and caimans a dwarf retic at 5-10 feet is (DWARF ) compared to a 25 feet mainland, the term dwarf is relative. With crocs and caiman yes a 4 foot dwarf caiman is tint compared to an east african nile croc, but a 4 foot dwarf c s iman is a big powerful animal that can really f*** you up, trust me i,'ve been bit, and any crocodilian over 2.5 feet you have to know what your doing and hang on. If you are set on a small retic, my advice would be tofind a pure cbb male Madu or Honey Island retic, ibelieve they are the smallest. Peace alligatorboy1984

My female mainland is a year & few months old, she has always been fed appropriate sized meals once a week and she's already on the 9ft mark so this theory is completely false.

My female laid 24 eggs. 21 were perfect. She is 14' feet. 3.5 years old. First time breeder. Eating one 4lbs rabbit a week every week. Your theory is wrong. I will bet $1000 she she will lay more eggs next season, eating once a week a 4lbs rabbit. 4lbs isnt a really big meal. Barely leaves a lump.
