Elephants are being captured and mistreated around the world for personal gains for a long time. In the recent years or decades, there are many people and organisations who took up the mantle to free those elephants in captivity and are ill treated around the world. Thailand too has several of those Elephant Freedom Projects operating under different organisations and names.
There are many “Ethical Elephant Sanctuaries” in Thailand, especially around Chiang Mai, which offer an experience for travellers for a Donation which in turn will go towards the care of these rescued elephants.
I went with an organisation called “Elephant Freedom Project” located near Chiang Mai and had a once in a lifetime experience with the rescued elephants. Even though I’m from India and elephants are not anything new for us, this was my first experience to be in a close proximity with elephants and a chance to interact with them and understand their behaviour.
There are many Elephant Sanctuaries in Thailand, but look for “Ethical Elephant Sanctuary” where they don’t allow elephant safari on their back and treat these magnificent creatures with care.
