PS: And I remember, too: Still in my mother‘s generation (born 1947) it was common to wear the same clothes for 6 days/week; only to be changed on sundays. On mondays then came the traditional washing day: All day long, year through. Don‘t get me wrong, I would‘t want these days back, but keep in mind, that this was the way our anchestors tried to get along with loads of dirty laundry (having more kids in average than today). All the water that had to be hauled in, boiled, dragged to the cellar, all the damp fumes in the washing cellars, all the hard physical work involved. Then it was on to drying, outside, spread out on the meadow. Then, in the middle of the week, it was about ironing the clothes. Again hard physical work, lugging coal upstairs, heating heavy iron and handling it all day.…

Yes there was a lot of hard work back in those days! And wow, even in 1947 that people were wearing the same clothes for 6 days a week. And now we have so many clothes that we don’t need and some we don’t even want!

I saw an TV-Doku online recently, where a family from Berlin went back in time to live 3 months like a farmers family at the year of 1902. They showed a laundry day too and I really felt for them that was really hard work that lasted the whole day

What you actually need is a big washdryer as well. It saves a lot of time and space in the laundry room.
@Gunbold
@Gunbold 3 года назад
The big disadvantage of washdryer is, that you can only dry half of the amount of clothes than it can wash

I always do it whenever I get a full load together, as you now know our german front loaders need a lot of time and prefer doing it in time becaue then in will takr less time than doing three machines a day. I like getting rid of this annoying chore as soon as possible and do more often in a quicker time than spending the whole day on the f......ing laundry

When you live together with six people it is kind of important to spread out the workload across the shoulders available. When it comes to laundry, I have good experience with rolling instead of folding. It does not get messed up as easily when handling afterwords and it is a clearer task for people who don't do it regularly. I would be surprised, when one of your boys did laundry for the first time and it would not be all messy. The big problem with spreading out the workload is that it sometimes becomes a fight for power witch can lead to some ugly dynamics. I have good experience with gameficating. In my last living community we had a pin board. We drew on it little squares for the tasks that had to be done on a regular basis and little squares for every inhabitant. Every day every task got a pin. When you did one of the tasks, you transfer the pins from that task onto your field. That way the unpopular tasks got automaticly more pins. Once a month we to off as much pins as the one with the least pins had, so there would not accumulate to many pins on the board. When someone wanted something done but thought that they had already worked enough, they would just put some of their pins on that task. F.e. I cleaned the hole kitchen but the toilette is still more dirty than I like: so I put the pins I earned by cleaning the kitchen onto toilette cleaning to reward the person who takes up that task. When there is a one time task you can just put it on a peace of paper and pin it on with some of your pins, perhaps others will add some of theirs. Sometimes, we would decide together to put some one time task on the board and give it the same treatment as the regular tasks until someone does it.

Uuuh, just a question: was this video shot while you still lived in the USA? Because I saw the window in the back of your laundry room, and it wasn't what I expected to see in a German house. Edit: Yepp, that definitely was still back in the US; I saw the wall sockets at 3:11.

Try clear vinegar only once. It will soften the cloths and remove any smell.

I love your channel and learn so many tips. Thank you! I wanted to share a tip I like to use. I found that oxi-clean has too many harsh chemicals. I switched years ago to the main ingredient to Sodium Percarbonate. It whitens whites better than bleach; it cleans carpets, floors, and so many things. Sodium Percarbonate is a powder form that makes peroxide. For really dirty uses, I dissolve it in hot water first. Thank you again!

I think Germany is the right place for you! It really fits your obsession with cleanliness! This is the land of the "spring cleaning" (Frühjahrsputz) and the "sweeping week" (Kehrwoche)! Unfortunately, most Germans are so "clean" that your household tips will not be as popular with your German audience as they might be in America. Never mind! Your family videos are really great, as are your vlogs! 👍❤

Maybe also try not to wash everything sooo often. If the outfits aren't stained you can definitely reward them or at least parts of them. And how much can you actually sweat into your sheets in one week. Just air them over the day.

Yeah, I usually get to wear two to three "wears" out of my jeans (depending on how long I wear them), even more out of skirts (since they barely touch your actual body anyway), the only things which are washed automatically after one wear is underwear and socks. Everything else usually can stand to be used more than once.

Hello, I like and follow your videos, always an inspiration, thank you! Only a few thoughts to this video: Maybe WHY doing the laundry for your/our parent and greatparent generations was not as lamentable as to latest generations: They maybe remembered THEIR parent and greatparent generations, having neither washing machine nor dryer. BUT having to do laundry - since time immemorial - in creeks, no matter what wheather or how far the way or how cold the water or how dangerous the way to go. Big inconvenience. Lots of physical work! (Mostly for women and girls.) I can never understand how people nowadays do not value and appreciate enough all the electricity, washing machines and dryers - but see washing still as a hard task, whereas meanwhile it is all being done by machines. I am so thankful to my little helpers, whenever I put dirty laundry in and get it out a while later in cleanded or even dried shape … and meanwhile drinking a cup of coffee with a friend …
@MyMerryMessyGermanLife
@MyMerryMessyGermanLife 3 года назад
You make such a great point. We sometimes get too spoiled with all of our machines and conveniences! We can learn from our great grandparents who washed clothes by hand and only had 3-4 outfits total.

@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife Thank you so much for your reaction! Yes, this was really the case :-) ! One should not forget that bathing (then, after running water into houses/appartements, started beginning 20. century) was allowed only one day a week, namely (here: Germany) on Saturdays: father first, then mother, then children ... etc..all in the same water. As I mentioned, strange days, but it really wasn't all that long ago in the history of mankind. I'm always happy about my children's and my daily and sports clothes, which get washed whenever there's a load full. I'm still happy on Sundays when no one tells me (unlike as to my mother, I was born in 1968) "don't get dirty or you'll get a spanking". I appreciate all those conveniences that our ancestors could not even have imagined for over thousands (millions?) of years, and enjoy every time I use running water, toilet, washing machine, gardenhose, etc - plus my machines for washing and drying clothes. My grandmothers, great-grandmothers, great-great-grandmothers and all the many thousands of generations before them would have been overjoyed! It is only a blink of an eye in human history that something so unimaginable has come true. What a privilege to belong to one of the first generations. Go on with your videos, I will follow them :-). And happy welcome in old Europe :-)
