Hi, the color pencils that we use in class are Color Soft by Derwent. These are wax-based color pencils and what we can obtain in Singapore. If you are elsewhere, another very good brand is Sanford who produces a a type called Prismacolor which are equally good.
That's an interesting comment. It depends on the designer and and their intended purpose. If you're working in a jewellery company making designs for a product manager to approve you may never do this type of colour rendering. If you are doing a bespoke design for a customer, especially one with some very significant high value gemstones, then having a professional colour rendering can help to close the deal and provide a valueable element for the customer to keep to remember their experience with you as a designer. Even today with computer-aided design we see a lot of high-end bespoke jewellers incorporating traditional hand drawing techniques into their sales process because of the unique value this adds.
