I was a budding drummer in 1977(?) when Heart performed at the University of Idaho. The afternoon before the concert I got to watch/hear Mike warm up for nearly an hour - solo - over the PA. It was magical. I had never witnessed so much interplay between hands and bass drum patterns (with one foot). His fluid playing was an inspiration. Thanks Mike!

Yes Mike was crazy good. It wasnt just a display of talent but his drumlines drove the creshendos of the song. On the big hits many times i just focus on his drumming. Its incredibly musical.

No doubt and one of my favorites as well. That's a hard song to play especially the foot pattern he plays throughout the entire song. He's a monster and as I'm writing this he started talking about how challenging playing that song is and it's one of his favorites. Just a monster player and still playing is ass off and rocking.

Him and Roger Fisher were absolutely essential. Steve Fossen was important too. The band was never the same without that trio, and I consider Dog and Butterfly to be the last great Heart album.

Michael has been a good friend of mine for decades, he is a very private person and always try’s to chose his words carefully, as I can tell he’s doing in this video, especially being interviewed. He wants to be fair, but he also wants to get his point of view across without blaming, bashing or being mean. He’s a very nice man and has a great sense of humor and so much more. And of course his drumming is off the charts, one of the best.
@JoseMTamez
@JoseMTamez 2 месяца назад
Yeah, he seemed to really be struggling not to sound negative but you got to admit, he made an excellent point. That was supposed to be a celebration of the original members of Heart who created all the classics. How the hell you going to bring in some other musician to play one of their classic hits, especially Baracuda. That's low and a douche bag thing to do and I would have felt weird too but I'll say it for you, I would have been pissed! That was bullshit man!
@retrorona
@retrorona 18 дней назад
@@JoseMTamez Especially his drumming on Barracuda, another reason why him and Steve Fosson formed and play in “Heart By Heart”, they play all their classic hits and the way they were meant to be played by those who originally wrote and arranged them. Also totally agree it was BS the girls included some of their current touring band members at the RRHOF induction ceremony and for Barracuda!! A lot of people feel the same way.
@JoseMTamez

@@retrorona Have you seen the current lineup for Heart? Man, I saw them on Howard Stern YT video and that drummer was so lame, it was just to hard for me to continue watching. I would be willing to bet that one of the sisters, if not both, told the poor bastard to not play it like on the record. Needless to say I'm not going to any of their shows or buying any of their recent records. BTW: I saw mike as one of the judges for a drum off contest here in Houston Texas, I think it was back in 1984, and he was just a badass dude. There was an obvious reason for Mike D being a judge. That bass drum riff he does in Barracuda is like the John Bonham bass drum riff in Good Times Bad Times, an ankle buster. Except Mke D is doing that shit throughout the entire song...lol. Two Rock and Roll Classics!
@retrorona
@retrorona 16 дней назад
@@JoseMTamez I lost interest in Heart after Michael and Steve left, only Howard was left of the original line up and the direction they went after 1982 I wasn’t into, hence lost interest. Plus knowing a lot of the inside BS, I also lost respect. With that said, Ann is an amazing vocalist and I have mad respect for her talents. Michael did some drum clinics with other famous drummers and friends, one being Carmine Appice, and so much more with other bands that I’m sure you’re aware of. Michael love the style of Bonzo, Buddy Rich and others.

@@retrorona for me the departure of Roger Fisher was the first nail in the coffin. Mike and Steve’s was the last nail. Like you I appreciate the talent of the Wilson sisters, but as much as Heart isn’t Heart without them, I feel that Heart without Roger, Mike and Steve isn’t really Heart. It becomes just another good rock band instead of being a great one (like it used to be).

For me Heart was THE band when I was a kid. For 5 minutes back in the early ‘80’s I thought I might become a drummer and it was all due to Michael. I spend hours and hours trying to determine what the riff was in Barracuda. Studied every video back then of the band doing the song but it was beyond impossible for me so I moved on to real life. To this day Barracuda is my #1 song and Van Halen’s Jump my #2. It is so sad to finally hear what happened back then and then all the way forward to the RRHOF for them. So many years of uncertain endings. I know Michael has tried many times before to say how he felt but it is clearly still just too difficult for him to discuss, as most heartfelt things are in life. For what it’s worth, you have enriched the lives of countless early ‘60s kids who are today, at 62, still trying to figure out what a genius you are. Thank you both for a great interview!

He speaks the truth. So many drummers will be the indirect creator of a song yet in the publishing world If you did not sit down and pen out the lyrics and music, you are utterly forgotten despite being the catalyst behind the hit! It's BS when a drummer gets a lowly performance writer's credit yet without their fantastic beat they introduced to others in the band around them inspiring others to Pile onto their input theyre left out as a minor meaningless contributor. It's one of the biggest Robberies in the cut throat music business.

I am not a musician but an avid fan. I read somewhere many years ago that to get a song published you need two elements: a melody & a lyric. For me I thinks it’s grossly unfair that some bands don’t share credit with all contributors. But, if the bass player comes up with a great line that really makes the song, he should get credit. I read or heard an interview with Andy Summers where he said that Sting brought Every Breath You Take to rehearsal. They worked and worked but could not finish it. He went home and came up with the familiar guitar chord that we all know. To me, that’s a co-writer.

ANN and NANCY made a mistake , the current line up played songs that has nothing to do with them, the original line up was inducted! MIKE IS RIGHT it sounded not so good. he is also right about PRIVATE AUDITION it didn't show the band was growing. what is clear is that HEART never wrote their own music at that level again, they used other writers.

Ann and Nancy are broken people. They can't even get along with each other. I think their issues go way back. They gloss over their young years in their autobiography, but it couldn't have been easy moving around all the time (since their dad was in the military.) Ann had no problem bashing Roger Fisher in the book talking about how "high" he was in 1979 yet doesn't mention her habit with the bottle until the end of the book. Just an inconvenient truth. How much did the drinking affect the band, her appearance, their performances? She claims she never drank before gigs, but if you watch the 1982 live footage (the concert in Germany) she appears drunk onstage. Just the way she is moving around - feeling no pain. I could be wrong, but I always got that impression.

Jamming you come up with ideas, sometimes you build a song sometimes you shelf it for a later date. Riffs and bits, ideas create a structure. In a group setting, what's wrong with collaborative song credit. Any relationship lasts because we accept individuals as themselves and nurture the connection. A song is a composition.

As a vocalist I did the majority of writing with my guitar players. I also always insisted that all songs be copyrighted with equal divisions/share with band mates. With the only exceptions being when a member brought his/her own song to the band. i.e something I or band member wrote apart from the band and was just being rearranged into a new version for bands use. Although I disagree about PRIVATE AUDITION, great album!

Unless the new drummer pain stakingly learns all intricate parts and drum lines presenting the energy of the song it won't sound right and instead be sterile. I really think Mike is that good. He's too modest to point this out. These are all iconic legends. Roger was also irreplacable. I understand emotions or problems, but his playing is geniously iconic..Guitarists can imitate but never match his tone. His tone is his fingers and he can get all guitars sounding like Roger Fisher. Others can copy the specific equiptment and it sounds sterile. I know this is about Michael but Roger Fisher. Ya man. That man is a guitar genius.

Magic Man is a cool beat . . Michael Derosier had nothing to do with that recording. He didn't play on Crazy On You either. . Out of the 10 tracks on Hearts debut he only played on 2 songs (the weaker songs). Heart should have continued with Kat Hendrikse who played on half of the Dreamboat Annie record. Derosier didn't bother learning those parts for live performances (which is why all those great tracks from 1975 never sounded the same live) Heart's music was better off with session drummers who had great jazz sensibility that Michael wouldn't or couldn't replicate. In my opinion the greatest Heart record is their debut because of the more progressive feel to their music compared to the Gypsy-Rock style that was present in Michael's style in the records that followed. I find it funny how he judged the RRHOF performance of Barracuda for being slower and not accurate to the original. However if you listen to the drumming in Crazy On You he too didn't bother learning the original part by Kat Hendrikse present on the recording. . The opening and closing of the high-hat present in Crazy One You is integral to the quality of the song and it's a shame he never imitated it along with songs like Magic Man and Soul Of The Sea.
