Yes, Ann Wilson is my all-time favorite. I also love Johnette Napolitano's killer vocals. She doesn't have that killer high range, but she's damned powerful as well.
The way Ann Wilson belts out this line from Crazy On You - "And you kept me alive with your sweet flowing love" - is the GREATEST all time performance of any female vocalist in the history of Rock. It is unmatched. Pat Benatar and several other female rock vocalists were amazing and sang songs which came close, but Ann Wilson was the greatest, all time Queen of female Rock vocalists.
No knock against the men of rock AT ALL, but I have always felt that the ladies have a higher degree of kick-ass in their music because they were successful despite the blatant misogyny thrown at them.
@@brklyn345Ann's talent and capability as a vocalist was so amazing that by and large, I think she always had great respect from her peers - even if it was begrudgingly given by some. I was 13 when their first album came out so myself and every other guy I knew thought the Wilson sisters were not only amazing to listen to but also to look at, LOL.
@@GTX1123 I was a sixteen year old girl when they came out and it was a bolt of lightening to me. Two female hard rockers who could hold their own against the best of the male rockers. Empowering.
I met Anne and Nancy Wilson and the two guys in the band in my friends family room once. They were all sitting on the couch and my friend introduced me. They were very nice and asked me how old I was and what grade I was in. They said they were in a Band and asked me if I had heard of them. I said No, and they laughed. I was not yet a teenager and they were about 10 years older than me. They had nice manners, but laughed at almost everything I said. I was confident and spoke my mind without intimidation. I remember their hair was pretty crazy and they wore leather and boots. Their image seemed not to match their manners. They were dressed like tough, mean people, but were sensitive, artistic and funny, which, at 11, confused me.
What a great memory for you!! I met Tommy Shaw from Styx, in 1984. He was in a guitar store, which was owned by my friend . Very nice, laid back guy; the opposite of what you might expect. The "famous", are just people.
@@BeautifulSpirit-kf5ld I went to a styx concert when I was younger. They make beautiful music. I also met the keyboardist from Steppenwolf once in the lobby piano bar at the Sheridan in Tacoma, wa his friend was trying out for the piano player job there and he was sitting there listening. I was there with a couple of college classmates and a psych professor. He asked what we were majoring in and I said psych and he talked to me about a problem he had and asked me to give him advice. I knew Steppenwolf was a very famous band but I didn't know the musicians. He didn't tell me until it came up in conversation naturally. He seemed like a very nice man. I wondered what a pain it must be to have people bugging you all the time when you are in public. That must be annoying to have zero privacy when in public unless someone doesn't know who you are. It must also be hard to be touring and working so hard all the time. It would be very lonely life even surrounded by all those people.
I’m 55 years old - I’ve heard this song for nearly my entire life, and I still go crazy when this song comes on the radio. Heart totally rocks even after all this time.
I went to the Montreal Forum to see Rod Stewart, but left remembering Heart. Twenty rows back lined up centre stage, the acoustics were excellent: Ann Wilson's voice just blew me away. If I recall, they opened with that guitar wail on Magic Man, and I became an instant fan. Little did I know it was their first arena gig. They nailed it.
@elnubnub if memory serves, I would have been 16 and just out of high school. it was a Bryan Adams "Summer of '69" moment in many, many ways, except it would have been in 1975.
My memories of Heart is meeting the Wilson sisters at their soundcheck in Houston, way back in the late 70's. I was working the concert in Houston setting up lights, equipment, etc. I had just gotten out of the marines and they noticed the utility shirt I was wearing with USMC on the pocket and asked me where I got it. I told them I had just gotten out after 8 years. They talked a bit, told me their dad was a Marine, gave me a hug and did their soundcheck. I went back to work and after they finished Ann brought me a coke/pepsi, it was a long time ago so not sure, but they were kind to me. I've been a fan ever since.
The Wilson sisters/Heart opened the door and influenced so many female musicians when they blasted on to the scene. I am one of those heavily influenced by them and proud that they are from the Seattle area. Rock Goddesses!!!
First album I ever bought was Dreamboat Annie. I was 14. Second was Little Queen. Watching Ann speaking about those days here, every second is incredible, with fireworks going off in my head. Thanks for this!
Damn Ann you are looking so beautiful. I Love that you are still rockin and that hairstyle is really fantastic on you. Your Zep tribute was perfection. Thank You ♡
I'm floored. She is 70???? She and Nancy are supremely talented, can f'ing ROCK, and are both so incredibly beautiful. Wowwow. I heard all their songs on the radio when I was a kid, but I didn't realize how special they were.
great interview - I've always loved Ann Wilson - great performer and singer! I really loved her for the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin! She is just the best.
Professor of Rock - Where did you come from? How are you getting these interviews? Congratulations and best of luck. I might donate now. Wish I had more cash. Hopefully soon - working on class action like The Rainmaker.
Nancy and Ann had more balls than any other rock vocalist and guitarist out there. Male/female shouldn't matter at all for R&RHOF or any other "club." The fact that both could melt your face off with their respective talent and instrument is justification enough. And I agree 100%...Nancy slays guitar and is totally underrated. I'd guess a few back in the day may have been intimidated by both of these legends.
You asked for a memory so here goes. My wife and I have been married for 42 years so far and were high school sweethearts. Heart was the very first band we both loved. We saw their tour with Exile, (who we both thought really sucked), in 1979 just one year after our marriage. Since then we've had the good fortune to see them live maybe another half dozen times. We even saw Ann by herself a couple years ago here at the famous Celebrity Theater. We still pop out the vinyl every now and again. The music stands up. My favorite Heart song? Mistral Wind. Thanks for this great interview.
Thanks for sharing! I remember somewhere late 70s a neighbor had Dreamboat Annie album. Didn't appreciate it back then (~13) but at 18 it became one of my top 3 all time albums... can't begin to pick a favorite song of Heart's, just too many! Maybe Allies? Saw them in '85 or '86 in PHX for the tour of their self titled album, then once more in the 90's...
Absolutely no doubt that "Crazy On You" was a blockbuster, but then when they sang "Dreamboat Annie" and their voices were so ethereal and gentle, you could hardly believe it was the same two gals!
that entire album changed my musical tastes and helped me become way more open to music. I loved Crazy of You but this entire album was my first "rock" album and to this day, when I play it.... I just think, MAN this is some great music.
_I was a willow last night in a dream, I bent down over a clear running stream, sang you the song that I heard up above, you kept me alive with your sweet flowing LOVE!_ I sing along with that part Every. Single. Time. Great great song. Brilliant from intro to finish. Thanks for the music, Heart. ❤️
There’s always been something about Nancy’s guitar playing that I could never put my finger on. When Ann said Justin Hayward, it was a eureka moment for me.
We accept Heart as honary Canadiens. They paid their dues here first. So they always do well when they come here. Ann still has an outstanding voice and Nancy still looks like she's in her 30's in stage so much energy and still is an outstanding guitar player.
I will forever love heart....my mom had albums, I stole them and played them and wore them out. Every time I hear Dog and Butterfly, I always think of my mom. I saw them at 18 years old with her as well. There truly is no one like Heart.
I was 6 when my sister brought home D&B. I made her play that record over and over, convinced that these girls were actual angels. ...No one has changed my mind in 43 years.
Crazy on you was that song for me. Every time I heard it as a woman, it made me feel so empowered. My soul would just soar and it gave me chills. Heart is one of my all time favorite bands and Ann and Nancy Wilson are some of the most iconic women singers in rock and roll history. I love them so much!
Singers period, male or female...when you're of a certain caliber male or female goes out the window, and Ann Wilson and the rest of Heart for that matter are of that breed...but if you wanna talk just female wise then you're absolutely right
It's early 1976... I'm in high school... shopping at Cactus Records in Houston... incense is burning... "High Times" is prominently displayed on the rack... and Heart's "Crazy on You" is cranking through the JBL speakers from the Marantz receiver and Teac turntable. I had no choice, "Dreamboat Annie" came home with me - and I fell in love with the Wilson sisters right then! Thanks Professor for this excellent interview (as always) and helping keep my classic rock memories fresh!
She still has such a great voice and is very beautiful. Just listening to her speak is a joy. The resonance in her voice is just audible gold. The song is so incredible in many ways.
Just a few short years past, I was given the opportunity to see them at our State Fair. I was less than 50 feet from the stage rockin along with them. Then, this song came up and Nancy was at the end of the stage right there in front of me. We locked eyes and sang along together. One on one. And one of the few memories I treasure as I had never been that close to any rock group up on the stage. I had seen them years ago in Denver as part of the day long, multiple group concerts we use to have and the stage was a mile away. Thank you Nancy for singing along with me and thanks to Anne as well for being one of the best rock groups for all these years of keeping me young with your music. Long live Rock n Roll!!
I met my wife in high school in Ann Arbor, MI., Hearts first albums were with us in a magical time- and they are magical. After 42 years together, we still listen once in a while and we are drawn back into our early romance and precious times. I've always felt that their band- especially the original lineup, has been totally under-rated...
I remember the first time I heard this song. I was laying on the beach and it came on the radio and it just blew me away. Instant love. Been a Heart fan ever since.
Sort of uncomfortable "flamboyant" talk about Roger Fisher at 11:43. I get it.. you don't like him BUT his contributions are immense. Love the channel.
One of the most enjoyable books I've ever read is Ann & Nancy's "Kicking & Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul, & Rock and Roll." If you love Heart, this is the book to get. As for the video... great interviews of Ann, Steve, and Michael, Professor!
It's really something to see her now, after seeing her in the 70's. Both girls were always pretty and she still is, but you can see wisdom behind those eyes. I've learned with my wife, who is only six days younger than me, that cute young girls can't hold a candle to an older woman of inner substance. Beauty really does come from within. They say that with age comes wisdom, but sometimes age comes alone. It appears Ann is the full deal. :)
My most favorite band during my high school days. Fondly remember singing the entire Dreamboat Annie album with my girlfriends. 💖🎶💖🎶💖🎶💖 Dog and Butterfly forever a favorite.
No one -- male or female -- will ever come close to Ann Wilson's vocals. An unsurpassed, one-of-a-kind master at the top of her profession. She deserves the utmost respect. ❤️❤️❤️
There's plenty of singers that match Ann Wilson-Ian Gillan in his prime, David Bowie, Gregg Allman, Annie Lennox, Paul McCartney, Karen Lawrence, Chris Cornell, and the list goes on.
@@DCB728 by no means am i talking shit about those artists or your music taste but youre 100% wrong. You may value those singers the same as you value Ann but none of them have the vocal range she does.
@user A singers greatness (or lack thereof), can't be reduced to simply what their range is. How about the expressiveness in their voice? Tonal quality? I'm tired of reading all these comments about how amazing Ann Wilson still sounds. It's natural for a singer to not sound as good at 70 years old as they did when they were 30 (hello Gillan). I'm afraid Ann has lost a fair amount of her range. Her voice gets clipped at times. Go and listen to her from 1978 (amazing) and then from 2018.
My Memories of Heart • 1st and foremost listening to the actual Radio Stations on my transistor on the local Seattle Radio stations • KZOK • KISW ! Mostly at night! • Great Music • Little Queen had a big influence on me while in HS •
I was 15, maybe 16 when Heart was first heard in Australia. Or at least this is when I first heard Heart. I genuinely fell in love with Ann Wilson. Teenage love, not teenage lust. I'm 60 now and still every time I see her sing or talk -- that little flutter comes back. And what a band!
Even now, I think I'd turn into a fawning, babbling idiot if I was seated across from this great lady. Did anybody rock as hard as Miss Wilson? She was just so damn cool when she was on the stage and of course, her voice was otherworldly. I'm glad you have better composure than I and were able to conduct a fantastic interview.
@@thecman26 Glad it's not just me. I'm totally not the type who gets easily starstruck - I can count on one hand the number of celebrities I'm actively wowed by. Ann Wilson is one. Stevie Nicks would likewise send me into unmanly vapors.
@@emmalfal I'm with ya! Due to previous jobs I have met many people in very high national positions and was very impressed but not as star struck as I could imagine meeting somebody like Ann! As well Stevie Nick's would do it for me too!
I remember being a teenage girl and watching Nancy Wilson they way she played that guitar and being utterly amazed. Ann of course has an incredible voice which is like no other. I've seen them many times and love them to this day.
@@djtoman6875 YOU'RE BEING VERY POLITE ! " I'M talking about; "LEAVE THE BOOTS ON AND I WILL worried about the LEATHER AND THE LACE...!!!" JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND Lindsey Buckingham? When you have the time to go back and watch some of those early interviews from 77 and 78 and I don't understand how you can be cheating on that? She was just so incredibly sexy, and still is that she could lay their night and Song the phone book and make any man happy! There has got to be a weak Link in the DNA pool to not be able RECOGNIZE THAT! Funny thing is too - is that I've been in the business for years and met so many people and was working for BGP in San Francisco and that's the ONLY PERSON that I waited for EVER..! AND - she NEVER came out of the dressing room AFTER The Show! On top of that, I got to be friends with John McVie TOO and she's still a very elusive woman INDEED! I'm sure she's happy though that she didn't stay with John Henley because the poor brother ain't Aging too well!!! My producer put her recording studio in her house when she was living in Scottsdale or Phoenix at the time and he made a POINT of CALLING ME when he was sitting on the edge of her bed! Just for the pure joy of the TORMENT! She' still looking great though at 71 years old - I'll say that! ANYWAY - SO BE IT my brothers BUT at least a lot of us from that generation STILL do NOT forget! A little five foot one HURRICANE of a lady! ROCK ON GYPSY LADY!! 🙄🙄🤔🛐💕😘💋💋💋🤧💫🎼🎵🎶🎶🎶🤕🤕💯
Anne is right up there with Grace Slick and the other great female rockers. I fell in love with her and Nancy the first time I heard Magic Man on the radio in Marietta, GA.
Goosebumps when Ann told the Montreal story. Reminded me that a decade later, my first arena show ever (I was 14!) was another Heart's gig at the Montreal Forum. Sure enough, they thanked Montrealers for believing in them more than anyone. Magical memories!
Wow, Heart..I was very young in the 70s because I was born in 67 but I remember the first time I heard Heart on an album and not the radio. My friends older sister had a few friends over, the parents were away.. and I went to visit my friend. Well the back room was full of bell bottom pants, striped shirts a bad ass stereo system, albums every where and beer and liquor bottles along with plenty of weed. Oh and the 17 to prob 20 year olds...Myself and my friend didn't go to the back room, we were in the front living room watching TV, out riding our bikes or something. That day her sister yelled y'all come back here for a few.. so we went back there and they said pick an album. I picked Heart..Dreamboat Annie. Not knowing at the time I had heard their music on the radio. I picked it because the front was so pretty with the big heart lol. My mother always listened to a radio, while cooking, cleaning, driving.. so I grew up listening to all the top 40 stations I guess you could say.. well they played the album for us.. we sat there in that smokey room, even with the windows open it was smokey. And then one of the older sisters friends decided we needed to try a joint or a beer.. we were like no no we're good. He kept on and on. So we got up to leave and the jerk chased us all around the house with freaking beer!!! I guess I was 11 or maybe 12. I had tasted liquor and beer b4 because my father is German and alcohol isn't a big deal over there and mom and dad had friends they'd go out to parties with our dances, and they had a liquor cabinet and usually maybe a few beers in the fridge. So I knew it tasted like shit and I didn't want it. But I'll never forget that day.. the day a high, prob drunk shithead chased me a totally straight track runner around the house😂😂😂 yup.. it was funny and of course he never caught us😉 My first time listening to Dreamboat Annie in album form.. lol
Some of my earliest memories are of heart Performing at Parker's in shoreline. I wasn't quite 13 when they played Parker's. I would go stand in the parking lot at Sherwood high school & listened to the music through the walls. I got to see heart a few years Ago for the 1st time. I have Been blessed to know the writer of kicking & dreaming. ANN, Nancy's auto biography by Charles R Cross. What a waste of time not seen them in my early years keep on rockin girls. I love you ! God-bless
As a kid Ann and Nancy Wilson and ❤️ were always on the local Rock station. I don't remember a time when Crazy On You or Barracuda didn't exist. I loved their 80s stuff too. I am so glad I found your channel. BTW I just order my first pair of 🕶️ from Zenni. 😉
These two musicians are by far the two greatest musicians of my era! It takes me back and brings a smile to my face every time! The power these two woman create when they play and sing together is unsurpassed! Long live Rock and Roll!!!
I was just a kid when. I first heard Heart's music pouring out my parents stereo console. Their music influenced & moved me in a way that no other music ever had before. Music was such a mumbo-jumbo back then so many different influences and styles. When I heard their guitars and her voice I knew that we were in store for something really amazing! I still love listening to heart and I'm always discovering video & audio gems. So happy these ladies are still Rocking it out! Thank you for doing what you do!
I saw Heart in Huntsville AL in the fall of 79 or spring of 80. I didn't realize what I was seeing at the time. Years later, they're one of my favorite bands. Ann's voice is always wonderful! And Nancy's intro to Crazy on You is good enough to get them in the R&RHOF all by itself!
Ann and Nancy did such a fantastic job leading the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin in Stairway to Heaven. It was so good, I couldn't believe it. It brought tears to my eyes, and I go back and listen to it again so often. I loved Heart and Crazy on You, Dreamboat Annie, etc.. Still do.
I'm a 35-year-old black man from Kansas and I remember hearing that song on rock stations as a teenager and every time it blew my mind. Still does to this day. When I think if female rockers, I think if Ann and Nancy first. Regardless of gender, they're some of the best in history. Ann, keep slaying with that voice! You're a legend!
I remember that when Magic Man hit the charts, the critics were saying it was just a fluke, as though Heart would never make it in the long run. IMHO, Anne Wilson has the most powerful female voice in rock and roll. "Bad Animals", "Tall Dark Handsome Stranger", etc.
Heart is one of my favorite bands of all time and Ann and Nancy Wilson are my rock and roll heros especially, Nancy because, I am also a guitarist and have patterned much of my own style after Nancy Wilson. The song "Crazy On You" is epic! I love listening to that song while cycling, with the driving rhythm and electric guitars, going about 20 mph with the wind hitting my face.
