🛁My top tips for grooming a senior dog🛁
📌BRUSHING
When you are grooming your dog on a bench, make sure you use a non-slip matt underneath the towel on blanket as your senior dog might have sore joints and this will help them feel more comfortable while grooming them.
If your senior dog has sensitive skin, it’s a good idea to use a slicker that has protective tips, this will ensure you do not scratch the skin.
Keeping your senior dogs coat knot and matt free as well as removing the dead unwanted undercoat for those dogs who are heavy shedders such as pugs and Labradors. This will as this will help your senior dog regulate their body temperature and feel a lot more comfortable during the cooler and warmer months.
📌BATHING
Use a non-slip matt in the bath, this will prevent your senior dog from sliding around in the bath and hurting themselves.
A comfortable water temperature is between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius.
Use a sensitive shampoo and conditioner. Using conditioner will not only moisturise your dog’s skin it will make a lot easier to remove the knots and tangles caused by bathing. Making sure you rinse all the shampoo and conditioner from your dogs’ skin and coat, making them squeaky clean.
This will help the drying process because if there is dirt and oil left in your dog’s coat it will be harder to dry.
When drying your senior dog your need to ensure you have dried your dog from the inside out, ensuring you have dried the skin as well as the coat.
Pro tip- If your dog’s coat still feels cool to touch this usually mean your dog’s coat is not completely dry. Dry your dog’s coat until it feels warm to touch and the coat is separating and not clumping together.
📌NAILS
Make sure your dog’s nails are trimmed regular. If they are left longer this can cause pressure on the foot and toes and can be extremely uncomfortable and cause lots of pain for your senior dog.
📌Sanitary area.
Make sure you check your senior dogs’ sanitary areas regularly as your dog may be struggling to go to the toilet and may be getting a little messy in those area. Use an unseated wet wipe to keep the sanitary area clean. Using a different wipe for each area.
📌FEET
Keeping the hair in-between your dog’s pads shorter will prevent your senior dog from slipping around. Even if you have a short haired dog, as they begin not to walk or play as much, they are not wearing the hair down and their hair may grow a little longer in-between their pads and they may slip on the floors.
